There's a point.
a house full of books encourages the kids.
And it is easy to push the kids to read when its available, and can be seen.
A file inside your cell phone or ebook reader does not compare, unless it is easy to pass on.
I think it is not correct to assume Linux is free, while Microsoft needed to be paid.
From what I know, Asus spend thousands of hours in order to make Linux run in their machines. That's a cost too, right?
I think the better way to evaluate new software is not comparing that it took me 30 seconds to do this, and now it took me 45 seconds using the same hardware configuration.
what about things like it took me 9 mouseclicks/keystrokes to do this, and now it takes me 3 mouseclicks.
Or better still, it used to take me 20 minutes to be able to configure to do this, and that, and now it just takes less than a minute / or I could not do this before, and now I can!
I can say that finding a picture among my files before took me sooo long, and now with Vista, it is much easier
If undersea cables are not laid down properly and are easy to find and sabotage, then our whole internet infra is built on a foundation of loose sand...

The best tools will not bother you unless you let it...
I have used Microsoft word for years, and I don't think its features would bother you unless you are particularly sensitive....
If it does, there is WordPad, if you really just want to use it as a glorified typewriter....
Remember the old days when you buy a piece of land, you theoretically owns anything above your land space upto the sky.
Now, if that still holds, will we charge royalties everytime an airplane, or a kite flies over our 'airspace'.
This sounds ridiculous, but in my opinion, that is the same analogy that is being implied here for copyright.....
Well,
if the speed limit is 65 mph, why do people make cars that can go 200 or 250 mph?
why all the extra horsepower?
If there are no speed limits on processor speed, I would expect the manufacturer to continually push the envelope.
whether the 'rest' of us needs it is another question -- but there should be a good many who will need it and willing to pay a few extra hundred for it, I reckon.
After all, why create computers with hundreds or thousands of processors running hundreds of teraflops?
Its strange that almost everybody is up in arms against him.
the greatest lesson I learned is that a fool can be right sometimes, and Dvorak has been there for more than 20 years, he's more than a fool....
I just found out that more than half of the things in my computer are really 'garbage'.
Maybe I should not be keeping it in the first place.
it just made looking for the right things so hard.
But then storage is so cheap.... that sometimes in the same hard drive, I could find myself having three copies of the same data.
Why BETA last so long...
I don't know why it is deplorable to consumers -- at least betas I know don't ask us to pay money on it, and it does result in much more stability if it is finally released after so much rigorous testing.
I don't quite get it, because Microsoft Windows Server, as far as I know, had always move more. The issue was that Linux was growing faster...
Also, the TCO issue may have some basis, but we have to take into account other things... HOw much do you really want to pay to make your life easier , or cool?
After all, why do people buy Porsches, or Nike?

That's still less than 1% of Microsoft's revenues isn't it? so there is still a way to go.
