    From the Plasma FAQ:

Please provide an option to disable the upper right cashew.

Although putting an option to disable the cashew for desktops sounds reasonable, from a coding point of view it would introduce unnecessary complexity and would break the design. What has been suggested is, since the destkop itself (a containment) is handled by plugins, to write a plugin that would draw the desktop without the cashew itself. Currently some work ("blank desktop" plugin) is already present in KDE SVN. With containment type switching expected by KDE 4.2, it is not unreasonable to see alternative desktop types developed by then.

Nice FUD you got here, mate. For the first question here is a video (made by yours truly) that shows that it can be done. As for the second, the Plasma FAQ gives an answer:

Can I move the applets on the panel?

Just before KDE 4.1 RC1, a change has been introduced in Plasma to allow movement of the applets on the panel. To do so, open up the panel controller (by clicking on the cashew or by right clicking on the panel and selecting "Panel Settings") and hover the mouse cursor over the applets. Its shape will turn into four arrows, and you'll be able to rearrange the applets as you wish.

Why do you say zooming doesn't work? It does work here in this nightly SVN build (which will be 4.1). I prefer the key shortcuts because I use an NVIDIA card, hence slower than what it could be. The concept is that you separate activities for what you do.
The concept is that the desktop is no longer a simple, and static dumping ground for whatever you have, but something you decide to customize to your needs. For example I have 2-3 folder views on my desktop which I use for quickly reviewing stuff I'm working on. Old habits die hard, but personally speaking I can't stand 3.5.9 any longer after this. There are of course missing features or implementations that can be improved, but this release, from my point of view, is quite usable.

And that just mentions the desktop shell, and not the rest of the applications, which are in a good shape (including KDE-PIM, which was missing from KDE 4.0.x).

Actually I'm not sure if the performance loss is a problem of my card (NVIDIA).

That said, I'll see if I can post something later today. Oh and in 4.0.x the feature was really unfinished, so actually it did not work as expected, but was left anyway because a number of bugs were actually fixed by identifying problems due to its presence.

I run semi-nightly builds of SVN from Project Neon and I can say I'm very satisfied with KDE 4.1. Compared to 4.0.x there has been a tremendous leap in features and polishing, and the new Plasma features make it better for me to work. An explanation: Plasma enables you to zoom-in and out of your current desktop. When zoomed out, you can add another desktop ("Activity") in which you can place plasmoids like the one you were using before. You can switch between them using keyboard or zooming in and then out.

What makes it different from X11's standard virtual desktops? The fact that activities are completely independent from each other. I have one set of plasmoids on my "leisure" view, a different one in my "coding" view, and yet another one in my "writing" view. In this context, Folder View is absolutely brilliant, as you are not enslaved to ~/Destkop, but instead you can view many more dirs (including remote ones: anything that KIO supports works), and you can filter for file names/extensions (there are plans to do MIME type filtering in the future, IIRC). Like that, I actually work much better than with the old desktop paradigm (I *hated* when desktops became huge and pointless dumping grounds for anything).

Some missing features have crept in since last beta, including moving the applets on the panel.

  14. Re:Usefulness? on Google Gadgets Join Dashboard Widgets As KDE Plasmoids · · Score: 3, Informative

'd certainly make use of it. I haven't seen Plasma, but if they're copying Dashboard in any way I'll probably be avoid that too, if I ever bother with KDE 4.

For clarity's sake, notice that the goal of Plasma is far more ambitious than Dashboard. Plasmoids/Applets (native Plasma widgets) are meant to interact with the rest of the desktop. They can be used to stay pretty there, but also to actually carry out tasks (the part that displays folders on the desktop is an applet itself. Applets can be grouped in containers (containments; even the panel/taskbar is one of them), and some of these containers can be used to separate the desktop into different "activities" that can be accessed by zooming out of a containment and in in another.

Hope this puts things into perspective.

The biggest point is probably containment switching and customizing. Containments are the "containers" for applets, or plasmoids, and the idea is that you create them according to your needs (activity-based) and then switch among them on the fly. It's different from X11 virtual desktop switching because (in theory) each containment could be totally different. You'd switch between them by zooming in and out (Zooming User Interface - ZUI). Implementation of this is already under way in current SVN.

THE ACCUSATION - The reason, explained in a brief communication, is because in the "Leonardo Domenici" page on the site there are references to decisions made by the Mayor and his staff that, quoting, ''caused criticism from the citizens'', quoting in particular the award of a contract related to the management of the town's parking lots to the "Firenze Parking" company, of which Dominici and Cioni's wives have seats in the board of directors.

THE INQUIRY - The communication from the Mayor reminds that such a "defamation" had circulated in the past and that in 2004 the office of the public prosecutor had started an investigation, resulting in one indictment and a request for a trial. The Wikipedia page, however (at the time of writing) has not been modified and is still now present in the form challenged by Domenici. Hence the decision to sue for defamation and libel.
