  1. Re:RPG != FPS on Shadowrun for the 360 · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Bloodlines isn't a FPS; it's exactly what I wish they would do for Shadowrun, which is an RPG-style video game based on a pencil-and-paper RPG. The game in question, Vampire: The Masquerade (and now Vampire: The Requiem) is put out by White Wolf, the subject of the recent semi-scandal regarding pay-to-play for their live-action game rules. Basically, if there's going to be an adaptation of a pen-and-paper RPG to the video game medium, I'd much prefer it be something like Bloodlines (which I hear is a good RPG, though I haven't played it personally) as opposed to the FPS style Shadowrun game mentioned above or White Wolf's earlier FPS that was based on another one of their games (Hunter: The Reckoning).

    That just seems somehow wrong. Next thing we know, we'll have Vampire: The FPS, out in stores everywhere!

    Oh wait, they called it Hunter for the PS2...

    I'd be skeptical of the opinion of anyone who wrote an article to promote his or her own business. This article is published on a site that sells RSS feed creation services. The author is also the site's marketing director, as is clearly stated in her bio. The article is just one big ad for this site's product.

    I agree. The new table is a cute exercise in graphic design, but the splayed-out spiral arms make it confusing and difficult to follow if one actually intends to use the table for scientific purposes. Current users of Mendelev's periodic table are also familiar with the patterns it creates, such as the noble gases. Having the rows "end abruptly" as the article claims has a scientific use. The current periodic table makes it easy to pick out certain groups of elements that share vertical similarities, as well as helping to visually calculate electron shell levels for each element. There's no way a chart like this could ever replac the functionality of Mendelev's original design.

  7. If you have to blame someone, blame the industry on American Anime Localization Company Tries Torrents · · Score: 1
    It appears to be that the people they generally get to do the English voice acting aren't too great.

    That isn't necessarily true. There are plenty of bad dubs out there, make no mistake about that, but saying it's the fault of the actors or directors is an oversimplification of the issue. When anime is dubbed into English, it's done on a very limited budget. Voice actors are paid by the hour, and directors only have as much budget as their studios allow to complete the project. As I understand it, different recording studios bid for each project, and it usually goes to the lowest bid.

    Now imagine you're a dub director. You have finite resources, very limited time, and producers who can tell you to go back and re-dub anything they don't like, which could also take time. In my experience, voice actors and directors do their best with the situation they're presented with. Also, please take note of the fact that dub actors not only have to match the lip flap of characters speaking another language--which can greatly affect delivery--but also do not know the entire script, nor do they have copies beforehand. Dubbing is just a cold reading of lines in isolation, and sometimes even the director, who is supposed to be giving the actors guidance as to their characters' motivations and the plot at that point in time, has not seen the full show before the session.

    So before you blame voice actors for the lower quality of English dubs, think about the conditions they're working under.

    You're absolutely right. These games are clearly marked "mature" and cannot be purchased by the children, only by the parents on their behalf.

    So let's say, hypothetically, that the video game did indeed cause the child some sort of irreperable harm; damaged its mind in some way, or what have you. Wouldn't the more logical solution be to bring the parents up on charges of child abuse or neglect? Granted that's pretty extreme, but no more so than blaming game manufacturers for violent games. That'd be like blaming the porn industry for your 16-year-old son going out and getting some 16-year-old girl pregnant. Logic, anyone?
