Oddly enough, the iPhone will execute unsigned binaries. The bootloader and updates must be signed, but hackers have successfully transferred and run their own binaries using Apple's own API (iTunesMobileDevice).

Actually, the funny thing is the house and the senate here are in a stalemate. The house is refusing to pass any bill sponsored by a senator and vice versa. The session ends in a week... if the deadlock continues, NO bills at all are going to get passed and $300 million is going to go unspent (at least until the governor calls a special session).

  6. Bad Move? on MS To Launch Internet Versions of Office And Windows · · Score: 5, Interesting

This seems like it could be the beginning of everything moving to a more web-oriented computer experience. Who needs Windows when you can use Office, MSN, etc. FROM FIREFOX (under Linux). Windows could be left for professionals who need a robust platform to run "real" applications for things like video/image editing, CAD design, etc. Everyday users could do the most basic computer tasks in the same way under Linux as under Windows... I guess even if this kills Windows, Microsoft has a stake in it either way now...

  7. Re:CDC Has known this for years... Media has avoid on Gene Found In Black Death Survivors Stops HIV · · Score: 1

Right, this isn't "news" by any means! There has been a documentary (PBS, I believe) about the Delta-32 mutation and its potential to prevent AIDS... HIV works in a very similar way to "Black Death"; there is essentially a "hole" in the cell membrane of white blood cells. Both viruses target the white blood cells, weakening the body's immune system. The documentary told several stories of people who somehow managed to not catch the plague. For example, there was an outbreak of the plague in a small village. It was quarantined. When officials returned 3 years after the outbreak, they were astounded to find that one man (the mortician!) was still alive. Genetic tests on people believed to be this man's descendants revealed the presence of this Delta-32 mutation. Other evidence suggested that having just one copy of this mutation could still be useful. There was a story of a woman recovering from the Black Death, something that was remarkable. She was believed to have just one copy of the mutation, therefore a partial ability to fight off the disease. I found the entire thing very interesting :)

    1) It's spelled "Mormons"
    2) The trib moves the URL after it's no longer in the day's news
    3) The trib isn't a Mormon paper. The Mormon paper is Deseret News (www.desnews.com)

But I have to admit, the poor Trib probably isn't used to getting slashdotted :)
