  1. WinCE is not all bad on Windows CE going Open Source? · · Score: 2

hmmm... if these rumours turn out to be true that could be a good thing. As someone who has tried both PalmOS and WinCE for a long period of time, WinCE is actually the better of the two (even though it IS made by Microsoft). But how likely is it? Microsoft is built on the foundation of proprietary source code, despite the recent rumors (Ballmer's comments, etc). I won't look for Microsoft Open Source ANYTHING anytime soon! --- "Progress is the God of the Machine"

...are JUST THE BEGINNING SIGNS of the next great era. The Great Shedding of Religion. Again?!? How many times must this happen? Nietzsche pointed out that the belief in God died almost 100 years ago ("God is dead") and yet the official signs remain. Religion is as Ventura described, a crutch for the weak-minded. But for the rest of the people... it is a series of meaningless rituals that are done for the sake of tradition. Does anyone really think that Bill Clinton believes in organized religion? Or Steve Forbes? Not likely... but to denounce it a la Ventura is not worthwhile politically. And yet they attend church, etc to appease the few (but vocal weak-minded people). And among those intelligent people who claim they believe, they act their lives in a manner where it becomes obvious that they have cognitively seperated logical beliefs from traditional rituals. They may belief that the Earth was created 7000 years ago... but they understand that we are seeing stars that exploded billions of years ago, with no contradiction. They belief with their mouth but understand with their mind -- strange but true, I know many of them! --- "Progress is the God of the Machine"

I agree with you completely. But this will change. 1. Reading from paper is easier on the eyes. Reading on a TFT screen is much easier on the eyes than a CRT. Once the TFT shortage is overcome, prices will finally drop so so we can all give our eyes a rest. 2. You can take it anywhere. Read it outside in the sunshine, or even in bed. True enough. But wait until laptops/PDA and wireless data communications become more prevelant. Then you could take your laptop/PDA anywhere you want (and hopefully we can get a machine with less glare in the sun). 3. People feel safer with a hard copy than just having a file on a computer which could easily be trashed if they are not competant users. Ah... but that fades with time. Power users (such as most of us here) know that this is not a problem. Plus... if it is on the web, who cares if it gets trashed because you can always retrieve it later. Personally, I think monitoring is not a good idea. If an employee can double his/her productivity by taking short breaks to chat with friends online, then by all means that employee should do so. I agree with you, that taking short breaks is good for productivity. BUT I still think that a company has the right to ignore that and disallow short chats, even if it is damaging to them in the long run. I think that they should be allowed to monitor employee keystrokes... but they should have to warn the employees first and have a well-stated proper use policy so the user can be safe to go onto chat rooms or type personal emails if necessary. --- "Progress is the god of the machine"

That isn't exactly a valid analogy, considering that with our technology we could hunt to extinction pretty much any large land animal we wanted to. Why does that make it any different? All dominant species have some characteristics that make them dominant... it's what makes them *DOMINANT* in the first place. As in: some animals have sharp teeth and claws, and others run/swim/fly very fast to avoid prey. We have brains, which allow us to make tools/weapons which make us the dominant species on earth. It *IS* natural selection at its finest.
