You would assume that this would be a great place to have a civil discussion on technology providing safety for children. Unfortunately that is not the case. It has been my experience that the readers of this forum tend to be paranoid. They are afraid of monitoring of any type, as you can tell from the many posts suggesting that you are somehow over reacting.
Big brother is mentioned more in the/. forum than anywhere else on the planet... This is a group who really is afraid of having someone look at them without their knowledge and this overwhelming fear extends to others by proxy.
To actually answer your question; I can't help a lot. I did some research last year on devices for my children and decided that a cell phone is not a bad idea, but, in my case, it is going to have to wait a few years so that the little ones can appreciate the value of the device and not lose it. Check out what Verizon has to offer. That is what I did.
-I think a lot of the posters here have never known the heart dropping feeling of haveing a lost child (even for a minute)... If they had, the posts would not have been so glib. Good luck in your hunt.
Hey you left out 17.5% sales tax and nearly 50% income tax to cover all that better insurance, universal health care and time off from work. Oh and the $10.00 a gallon gas cost (%50 - %60 in tax). Who would want to miss out on that?
The use of encryption on our company network by the user community is against corporate IT policy. Using encryption on email could be grounds to be investigated and possibly getting let go.
This is a complete load of crap: "The only reason it is the world's number one browser is because it comes pre-installed with WIndows."
Every version of Windows has Notepad and Wordpad. However, these are not the worlds number one text editors... There are better editors out and people spend a lot of money to get them (or download a free half-ass knockoff from the web). Either way, they go out of thier way to get something better. Why not do this for a browser? That's an easy one: IE7 works pretty well and there is nothing out that is significantly better.
I have downloaded and used FireFox just to see if it is really that much better than IE. It is not. If IE is an ugly building I would have to say that it is surrounded by many more just like it except not as tall. I use IE7 every single day and have almost zero problems. Where do you get this crap?
It is difficult for me to imagine that this question was posted by Dr. Hawking. The answer is self evident. However, the answer is simply this: The human race will survive the next 100 years exactly as it survived the last 100 years.
There is nothing new in political conflict, racial discord, religious fanaticism or just plain hatred of anyone that is different. This has been an integral part of what we are and has, unfortunately, been greatly responsible for our development. As much as we would like to deny it; hatred is as much a part of what we are as is our capacity for benevolence.
If the conflicts of the last 100 years have not destroyed us; then I think it highly unlikely that the next 100 years will have any significant impact on totality of humans.
I remember the issues with Windows NT 3.51 and many stability problems with these systems that had any sort of server load on them. However, I am still running NT 4.0 boxes that have been running non-stop for the last 6 years. My PDC is still NT 4.0, 7 days a week 24 hours for 6 years. There really is no stability issue with a properly configured NT, 2000 or 2003 box. The key here is "properly configured". I have a feeling that Linux is exactly the same way, as is Unix and any other OS.
So, I agree. FUD.
PC is the first step into socialism. Sorry, but we are heading towards more PC behaviour and not less...
