  1. Re:Why is that even possible? on Greek Hackers Target CERN's LHC · · Score: 1

BLACK HOLES, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE! According to a scientist/spokesman for CERN interviewed on PBS Evening News the day before the LHC was to go into operation, he claimed that there was nothing to worry about. They do indeed expect black holes to form, but they will disappear almost instantly, and furthermore he explained that these black holes are created in nature all the time. Past our atmosphere in space these particles are moving at the speed of light banging one another all the time, nothing to worry about. What they're excited about is that this will be the first time that the black holes will be created in the lab under controlled conditions. The Atlantic had a cr*ppy article on the dangers of the project and in a very flippant manner explained that we may all die once the switch was turned on, another example of an irresponsible piece written just for sensationalism.

Read the article this afternoon at work.

Actually used the Hair Gel trick today this evening on a Netflix DVD: The Collected Shorts by Jan Svankmajer that was horribly damaged.

Alberto VO5 Hairdressing Gel for Men. The DVD, after about 19-20 minutes was basically unplayable, pixilation, video noise, no sound, etc.

VO5 did the trick, thanks Slashdot.

  3. Re:How about the Olympics? on 4th BC Century Defensive Wall Unearthed · · Score: 2, Interesting

The first Macedonian who could compete in the Olympic games was Alexander's grandfather.

Basically only Greeks could compete in the Olympic Games, so by that token they must've been sufficiently Hellinised so as to warrant participation in the Games.

Later on the Romans were allowed to participate but that's much later.

As to the Macedonians' 'Greekness' personally I imagine they were Hellinised but did maintain some difference.

Plutarch and Arrian (biographers after Alexander's death) both mention instances of when Alexander spoke to his troops or staff officers in Macedonian which couldn't be understood by the Greeks of his court.

One funny thing about Macedonians is that they unlike the Greeks drank their wine straight up without the use of additives (honey, herbs, and water).

Macedonians were to my knowledge not mentioned as participants in the Trojan War whereas Homer mentions all manner of other Greek people from all over the modern day Greek Peninsula and its surrounding islands.

That Alexander spread Greek ideas and culture throughout the Middle East is in fact testament to at least an appreciation of what he learnt under his teacher Aristotle.

    Were they Greeks? Probably not
Were they Hellinised? the elite certainly was

Today's Macedonians have little if anything to do at all culturally, or 'ethnically' with the Macedonians of old so there's no reason to discuss that. Far too many of the residents of Greek Macedonia are recent transplants from Asia Minor (1920's) and Hellinised Slavs.

A lot of people are commenting that their tax money would be going somewhere they don't want it to go to, or basically for a service that they're not using.

It's very common for our tax money to be redistributed, I'd imagine that if we truly knew where and to whome or what organization or institution it's going to, oftentimes we'd be mighty pissed.

Here in the States my tax money is used for many things I either don't have any use for or I actually don't want it to go to and I'd imagine the same would be true if I was taxed in Britain.

The idea is hopefully the people making the decisions are are doing so in the interests of society at large.

IMHO, taxing everyone for the BBC is like taxing people for Museums and such.

Our taxes could and does go to far worse things than the BBC.

3.File system and what it's good for (Good luck on that one)
    4.Downloads and where they go
5.Saving and why we should save
