    People aren't updating because computers are expensive, Intel and Microsoft take all the profits and walk away with a gross profit margin of over 70%...and new versions of the Microsoft Windows software, are poor tablet interfaces.

    If you're buying the latest and greatest gaming cards, you're probably going to want DirectX 10 or 11, good multicore support, and an OS that can handle more than 3-ish GB of RAM.

    XP had a 64-bit version and supported multi-core since service pack 2 :). That said I am getting a great gaming experience using Linux...OpenGL...on an Intel Onboard.(and judging by Steam hardware survey I'm not alone).

    Well, XP is 12 years old now. What to say...

    XP service Pack 3(XP was awful pre service pack 2 and delayed Vista for years) only had replaced by Vista Jan30 2007 and only then was not a viable replacement (XP continued to be sold on Netbooks)...many people only had sensible replacement in Windows 7 in October 22, 2009, even so many wireless cards and scanners still are not supported, and Windows 7 simply is too bloated to run comfortably on i915 and below. It was one of the reasons for the Vista Disaster. (Ironically being repeated with Windows 8.X only this time because of Metro).

    You measure support from End on Life not the start of it.

    Ummm, yeah. Microsoft is going to stop releasing security patches for the OS. If you're still running XP, using older video drivers should be the least of your concerns.

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx except that is not happening for another year. The initial date (although I suspect it will be pushed back) April 8 2014.

    Its also the date of the end of support for Office 2003. Most of the i915 and above machines (with 1GB of Memory) should simply be moved to Ubuntu and Libreoffice.

    But the reality is as the summery states AMD are jumping the gun on this.

    Ironically I am thinking about buying an ATI card for Linux due to its more open nature(Not intel open), so long term support is built into it. Perhaps AMD is only partly responsible.

    If you had to "get it working" then Apple most certainly can compete with that.

    Apple only works with their own proprietary hardware; software; I notice they have launched another incompatible connector this week. That only worked when they were dominant. Now its a foolish strategy, that locks Apple out of new markets, rather than their customers in.

    ....and you still have to set up the damn device.

They currently selling 560 Different googleTV devices ranging in price from $35-$200. Just becasue you wasn't interested does not mean everyone else wasn't...I went for a Raspberry Pi with XBMC, but It was a toss up.

    The OUYA is great. I have just unpacked mine, and is of surprisingly high quality. The games are fun and cheap. I wouldn't hesitate in suggesting anyone else own one.

    Opinions should be formed on experience.

    A quick look at released Android Console 1.7Ghz Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 with GB RAM 8Gb internal Memory and Nvidia Tegra 3. That is not a bad specification.It definitely puts it in this generation of consoles. If Google do come out with a console we are expecting a generation on from this again.

    Android also has a massive advantage over the Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo in that the hardware can be updated *every year*, which suits me.

    I don't disagree with you, you could argue they are full blown computers, TV's...but that would not stop them being relatively tiny compared to a 40" screen with dedicated controllers. I just got my OUYA working...Apple have nothing to compete.

    This is about the follow up to the never launched Nexus Q a media hub...which nobody really knew what to do with. Suddenly with Sony & Microsoft both pushing their game consoles as media hubs, and well a number of Android gaming consoles have already launched. I personally own two...OUYA and The PLAY.

    Personally I can see the speculation why Google will do a console/media hub...but its nothing to do with Apple

    Its set to become the dominant Operating system this year. PC's currently have about 1.2 Billion Machines. The last measure I have seen was 750 million devices activated in total and 1.5 million activations and that was Q32012

    The crash was mainly due to the lack of quality games and lots of poor ones, Android/Valve/Apple already have an abundance of successful games already, and all are in control of their shops..so can enforce any kind of quality control.

    Your computer was ASSEMBLED in TX. The motherboards and all the components are made in the Far East, mostly China. You're part of the "problem" whether you want to admit it or not. (I don't think there is a "problem" though)

    Why do you assume that to be the case? Intel have Fab sites in Oregon; Arizona; Ireland; Israel, Samsung manufacture chips in Austin...Hell even Sony Manufacture in Wales (They make the Pi :).     No I bought an Ouya I got it yesterday :), although I'm keeping an eye on the PS4 as its looking better than its previous offering. I am also interested in The (as yes vapourware) Google console...but we will have to wait and see.

    ...Ok I am really missing something. I used to love knoppix, but now everything is a live CD. I am as likely to quickly get a copy of Ubuntu Live CD running off a stick to get up and running quickly.(although this does have the advantage of having mdadm on the disk). In fact a full installation of Ubuntu onto a pen drive is more useful.

    There is not much information about flash-knoppix, and how it is different from say "startup disk creator"...and I noticed this from the text description "In order to create a bootable USB-medium (memory flashdisk, SD-card, digital camera with USB connector, cellphone with microSD, ...)," Okay I have never thought about using the MicroSD in my cell phone that is incredibly cool.

    People who were planning on Gaming on Microsoft's(not your) Console and on Microsofts' (not your)PC, and don't want to spend twice as much money, on something they may not want or need.

    That said none standard connectors are just shitty, for a whole host or reasons.

    Ironically I get my Whole OS updated for free every 6 months, and my browser moved to the latest version, thats not hypocrisy but an empirical fact. While Microsoft customers can't even update their browser for free.

    That's nice, but none of those site address any of the issues. kernel.org doesn't have all the latest security patches with backports to linux 1.0. Firefox and Chrome don't install on Windows 2000. And Windows XP doesn't represent 20% of the computers.

    Sorry I didn't realise you were trying to be deliberately obtuse. I find it hilarious that your response to Microsoft not supporting its customers on XP (which is still on 20% of 220,000,000 of it)s Desktops since IE9, is *third party* Web Browsers don't support Windows 2000. The answer is simply money. The cost of supporting a Windows 2000 which according to NetMarketshare currently has https://www.netmarketshare.com/report.aspx?qprid=11&qpaf=&qpcustom=Windows+2000&qpcustomb=0 0.07% of the market. Is the cost of supporting the platform outweight the benefits. Microsoft on the other hand Deliberately don't support its users!!

    The Kernel 1.0 patches are included on Kernel.org sorry the fact that they are not wrapped up in backports for a (open) *source code* project, is somewhat lost on you, because most people don't go "I don't want better support, I want worse support" (Ironically something Microsoft actually delivers), and the Kernel works by input from companies many of them, and if it was needed someone wanted it, it would have done it, but for the Desktop unlike Windows which is slow moving. Linux is every evolving released for free to the OS, and everybody gets a new version every 6Months. While Windows is tied to a machine users are pushed to paying for a new version (essentially a new computer) to get a new browser.

    If you really didn't know this from my initial response I suggest a college course.

Apple apologists have been arguing that Chinese workers(Foxconn) are cheaper than robots for forever, while Apple have smugly told the president that iphone manufacture will not return to America(They only argue to the Tax Man they are Irish...not the Irish tax Man obviously), because their workforce is does anything for biscuits. They have promised with must gusto to move the the less complicated parts of (one of its products) for PC manufacture(seriously) to the states to great fanfair...and failed to deliver.

    Apples instance and investment in what accounts to slave labour (ironically now simply redundant) has cost the company its cutting edge products to long refresh cycles, and heavy dependences on its rivals technology, which actually manufacture products, and have thousands of patents on touch-screen technology and update there phones every three months. Its profits dropping now its devices are considered Mid-range at best...At least they proudly pay no profits on those ever shrinking profit margins. At least it to Collect a Billion for its few design patents...Sorry 400Million...Less.

    I notice Google is getting Motorola to manufacture the cool named Xphone in the United States. I think its a good strategy. It would have been a better one for Apple...they chose to give the money back to shareholders instead...while avoiding paying tax again with ibonds.

    Sorry you seem confused. Microsoft is currently pushing an Agenda towards a heavily touch interface, constant across all devices. They are heavily pushing the word "ecosystem" and "classic" for what was the Desktop using real astroturfing, Using Visual Studio to push developers towards producing Metro Style Applications. Its currently locking down its (not your) devices to their web service with wrapping its whole OS in a massive overarching privacy breach, while locking the hardware down to Its OS to Its store...on its hardware. The potential profits are unimaginable. They are even being subtle about it.

    There is two solutions. Suck it up!its the future, or Move now to Linux...because the WIMP interface is not part of Microsoft's Future in fact you can go down to the store and buy part of it, you don't even have to queue up.

    Ironically in context of your comment this article is about Internet Explorer(in an unreleased version) finally catching up with WebGL after lagging behind.

    Ironically the Problem with IE6 was it was tied to the OS through monopolistic abuse, outdated(And in the absence of competition did not update it), and everywhere, and simply wasn't very good when compared to its competitors. Its net result is it held back the web for a many years.

    XP on the other hand, Microsoft has tied to the hardware :) was better than its replacement...and better than its current offering. Still has 20% of the market about 220,000,000 users, and again IE will not work on it.

    Internet Explorer is still tied to its platform, and massively behind its competitors from any other company a joke browser...the only thing that has changed is Internet Explorers dominance with has taken years to whittle despite a paradigm shift in the computing market, and competition available for free and orders of magnitude faster; leaner; secure; advanced.

    Its no wonder potential customers are looking elsewhere - for both browser(chrome) and platform(Android, Chrome and Linux)
