Apple successfully implemented a culture of "upgrading for the sake of upgrading", which Windows wasn't
Except Apple didn't, you need to stop talking about consumers like they are stupid. Apple successfully recreated itself as an electronics company its computing business is dying YOY its sales are down 22%
Intel's average quarterly gross margin in the last five years is 59.97 per cent, and Microsoft's is even higher at 78.31 per cent. Dell's average gross profit margin at group level is 19.53 per cent and HP's is 22.32 per cent.
PC's have competition in the form of more portable, simpler, cheaper, Better Screens, More responsive, cool devices, that are relatively cheap though the absence of Intel and Microsoft, who effectively killed the market for its own more portable, simpler, cheaper, More responsive, [admittedly with a poor screen] cool devices...the netbook, which they have replaced with their own netbook...sorry tablet "Surface", that is the reality is the polar opposite of the netbook; its only a little bigger...and still has a poor screen the surface, less response...and as cool as cancer. The fact that they have forced touchless PC's to be tablets, neglecting advantages of current input devices is just the icing on the cake.
Microsoft/Intel needed to create a revolution the Desktop [I'd argue nurture the netbook not kill it], not reinvent the tablet. Right now they need to trim there margins. Personally I think the $ needs to return to Micro$oft.
the PC I bought 5 years ago is pretty much still as...Tablets have had an impact!
Except blaming the economy while people are out buying new shiny toys that offer most of the functionality your PC shows money is not the problem. Perhaps Microsoft trying to sell PC's as tablets [often touchless tablets] is driving this market as well. Even more interesting is PC's used to have a 5year life cycle with new Windows driving those sales, yet you do not have a new machine.
These figures are rough and back in 2010 by Steve Perlman, founder of OnLive That bring the cost of a video game down to $27. For your $2.99 Andoird game the developers pay $25 for registration to distribute on the Google Play Store. Application developers receive 70 percent of the application price...leaving you with $2.09
A quick look at the console market http://www.vgchartz.com/ and consoles average about 80M potential customers at the end of a consoles useful life. Android is Heading towards 1Billion activations, and continue to grow [currently only 12.5x larger than Consoles].
I am making no claims that more money can be made from Android games than tradition console gaming, but comparing on total selling price alone is foolish when Android market is massive and continues to growl; there is no second hand market; risks are smaller; development costs cheaper; Customers buy more games; Alternative revenue streams.
No, but Microsoft used roughly GameCube quality hardware in the first generation Xbox: essentially a Celeron 733 and a GeForce 3.
In the context on this article a lot of us bought the original xbox, because of it being *relatively* open console. In the context of this article one of the killer features that people want is "Xbox Media Center"(XBMC) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XBMC
yeah its not like sony or nintendo or apple or blizzard or ea or ubisoft has drm huh? its all microsoft!
Ironically in context of this article my playstation console phone is running a third party OS, and because its cool you can use up a playstation 3 controller on all playstation certified phones. I support open hardware and shun overreaching DRM. As for you thinking others acting badly makes you think its acceptable for your bad behaviour its not, the fact that Microsoft is the only one on the list that does this on a General Personal Computer with a monopoly status just makes them he worst offender.
I guess everything is microsoft and therefore we can blame them for everything!
I think that is going a bit far Microsoft should receive blame for insisting on draconian DRM on its [not your] tablet, as well as draconian DRM within its software.
Sadly, the rule with games available on Android...is that they're almost all terrible. There are very few exceptions.
Except that is not even remotely true, having owned a Android game console for over 18 months, its my primary source of gaming, and the costs are cheap too. Android is becoming the primary gaming platform.
That's driven by the publishers, and you can bet the ones that do drm already will go with some sort of lockdown, drm or internet-connected system for their ouya games to.
...no that is just passing the buck. Microsoft recently got caught with their pans down, wanting an always online console, this follows their banning gown-up games in Europe, but they are all pretty much DRM upto the eyeballs. Your right though various software protection will be available on the OUYA, just like there is on all Android Apps, the difference with the OUYA is you own the hardware...rather than license it.
Now, many years later, we can see just how badly Nvidia has failed
I find ARM incredibly confusing. I understood PC CPU/GPU, and I am on the whole pretty knowledgeable. As informed as your post maybe. In my mind I can only name two really recognisable ARM brands!? Snapdragon[because it was everywhere] and Tegra...and I only associate one with graphics performance. I have to say brand goes a long way.
but if you think single platform games, on a vapourware machine costing twice as much as this console is somehow a threat to Nvidia Arm, its not. It might bring more affordable Windows Tablets to the masses...if anyone still wants one, or a cheap steam box if they can get it out of the gate fast enough. You have to remember Android is set to become the dominant platform this year.
This. Sadly, I personally don't think that Ouya content is going to be able to carry it though.
Except right now even before launch it has potentially more games than xbox360, ps3; and wii combined...and cheap too, most under a dollar. Everything from throwaway games to 20hr RPG's, Lets be honest most modern game engines work on Android. In fact the only problem it has is making out the quality from the...not so quality
"Market share" without profitability is meaningless -- ask the PC companies.
Now your getting it. As a market matures, margins drop, and Apple moves towards obscurity.
As for asking PC companies Intel's average quarterly gross margin in the last five years is 59.97 per cent, and Microsoft's is even higher at 78.31 per cent. Dell's average gross profit margin at group level is 19.53 per cent and HP's is 22.32 per cent.
Perhaps you should look at Financial *performance* rather than the the top and bottom line
Customers are the people buying your products. Apple's customers are the users, Google's customers are the advertisers.
Please don't waste my time quibbling over words, newspapers, TV, Radio and Magazines, Sports make most of their money through advertising. Would your prefer consumer or User...personally I don't care. ironically by your definition though Google is Apples customer as Apple sells its user to Google:)
Amazon.cn is not the largest online retailer in China. Which is what I have told you. And yet you keep pretending.
Amazon is the largest online retailer. Which is what I have told you. And yet you keep pretending.:).
Either way rather if you want to disprove my post I'm happy for your to provide a link to a translated larger Chinese only!? online retailer that lists Android phones by popularity, you won't because your affirming a disjunct. Either way the Chinese are walking around with killer Android phones.:)
No I used Amazon to verify average costs of a Chinese Android phone and the what you get for that cost, based on what the Largest Online retailer stated are in realtime was the most popular Android phones, and then quote the price and specifications of that model. To quote myself "1,165 yuan...so a little less than average. its a Motorola; dual-mode dual standby 1.2GHz dual-core Android 4.0 system 4.3-inch phone" Its actually been overtake by "ZTE ZTE U930 3G Mobile Phone (Black) TD-SCDMA/GSM, Android4.0, 4.3-inch IPS screen, 1.2Ghz dual-core" for 650 Yuan and you can see why. All the phones in the top ten are this price or over all with >4" screens and dual core processer over >1.2Ghz. The lie that the Chinese are using some kind on Android Dumbphone is insulting everyone's intelligence, as it pushes the bounds of Logic. http://translate.google.com.hk/translate?hl=en&sl=zh-CN&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Famazon.cn
Your right I do *state* that Apple is a localised phenomena in US and UK, they even sell less than Android even in those places elsewhere else they sell badly. Apple do not sell over 40M units consistently [A number half that of Samsung Alone:)] they are feast or fast depending when they launch an iphone:) Here is an easy to understand graph...as you can see Apple only broke the 40M unit once http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/83/World_Wide_Smartphone_Sales.png and Android sell over 140M in the same quarter.:) In fact it was that very 40M figure that was crashed Apples Market Cap for being too low.
I do mention China...although it could have easily been Brazil, When Apple has a teeny tiny market share, and not one single reference refutes that fact, irrespective of various variances. Is still sitting 80% behind Android:). I'm not sure why it terrifies you that the Chinese are currently using arguably better phones than the iphones at less cost. Its why Apple is a failure in china [and why Android sells more phone everywhere]. I provide two sources of information, and information from your own. That refutes your made up figure [and machine gunning company names is proof of this] Just for completeness here is a comparison of market share over time for smartphones http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ac/World_Wide_Smartphone_Sales_Share.png...its an Android world:)
Even in terms of "market share", Apple is much larger than Google
I'm pretty confident that in the context of this article Google has a lot more customers than Apple:) Its called Android its what Google Play sits on [I suppose Microsoft don't have any computers either:) with only surface]. To quote myself the response to "apple makes a shitload more money than all the others combined" was "Google+Samsung alone are larger than Apple:)" That is still true. Although its interesting to note the decline of Apple and the rise of Google:). I treated your posts seriously In future I will just have fun with you:)
Then show me your source, because right now local Analysis and Local retail...and the graphs you supply by IDG all point to $76 Android phone being a lie made up by you.
You provide no information about china and the source you provide again restates the fact Apple is a failure in China "China is a massive growth prospect but Apple is not making the market share impact there that it is in other markets. The lack of a device on the China Mobile network is a big drawback, combined with high price points."
I'm sticking with IDG over Amazon. I did check the facts and went with a reputable agency.
The you need to look at the data...as stupid as it is, you need to look at Android/Other Android Which look to collaborate *Analysys Network* results [amazon was used to provide meaning to data] which also shows the downward trend of Apple in China:) Perhaps you should click on my links, by the way on your graphs which show last quarters current sales those large yellow bars show Android sales...its difficult to make out but if your zoom in you can just make out the tiny market share of Apple:).
But again the your make up average selling smartphone in china is Comical, and without support, because at worst its a lie or at best a little racist through ignorance.

However, people who want to play Android games will play them on their Android phones (if they have one)
Absolutely, and their tablets too. Ignoring the fact that they in themselves are pretty good game platforms. I have owned a Android console from Sony over 18Months http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xperia_Play. Right now the Ouya is not the only successful kick-starter Android console http://gamestick.tv/ or that there are gaming tablets from Archos http://www.archos.com/products/themed/gamepad/index.html?country=us&lang=en#a Wikipad’s and 7-inch Android gaming tablet called Wikipad http://www.wikipad.com/...or even that Sony have introduced native DUALSHOCK 3 controller support for Xperia phones http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/09/sony-adding-dualshock-3-controller-support-to-xperia-devices/ Android gaming as you can see is taking off right now...even with traditional controllers.
Face it, you can't have great, immersive, polished, professional-quality games for $2.99
Ignoring the fact that you have not looked at Google Play recently :) Lets spend a little time looking at costs.

That is ignoring the fact that your favourite engine spits out binaries that will work on a plethora of platforms...Look at Unity http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_(game_engine)

Silly me for actually thinking profit and loss is more important than some random numbers,
Ok you don't know how to read a financial statement.
You work out Gross Profit Margin by Gross Profit ÷ Total Revenue
The fact that you think that is a random number means the end of this conversation.
so 'blame microsoft' is pretty ignorant.

Google play https://play.google.com/store/apps/collection/topselling_paid_game?start=0&num=24 has a list of best selling games which is as good a place as any to start, and Android has great games. Ravensword: Shadowlands is a great place to get into Android Gaming.
