    Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram all send email addresses and phone numbers to their local servers.

    The whole thing blew up and ended up with US congressmen sending letters to Tim Cook. This was feburary this year

    "This incident raises questions about whether Apple’s iOS app developer policies and practices may fall short when it comes to protecting the information of iPhone users and their contacts."

    Butterfield and Waxman then quote parts of Apple’s iOS developer website which states that Apple provides a comprehensive collection of tools and frameworks for storing, accessing and sharing data. It is then questioned whether Apple requires apps to request user permission before transmitting data about a user."

    I guess what various folks said here are correct, Apple IS the new Microsoft! Suing someone over trademark when thy were using the mark first? That's more MS-like than MS!

    No Microsoft is more bully; bribe; lie; outlast, and still do! Look at how they act in the mobile arena, the new Microsoft is..well Microsoft, Its why they are incredibly weak against the New Giants Apple and Google these tactics are simply ineffective.

    Apple being Apple which is simply a reflection of its CEO like Microsoft is a reflection of its; Companies are like dogs it seems. It is "Narcissistic Entitlement Syndrome" and the result is as always a long prolonged lawsuit over anything Steve Jobs Pissed on, ignoring any real sense of Justice. It has been pretty successful from a legal point of view...not so much from a practical...they haven't destroyed Android, where they have lost all their market share, sown from 23.1% to 14.9% as Android hits 75%.

    I'm sorry to disagree with you. Clearly you have an issue with Google. It is untrue that they sell your information. Their business model does not allow that. The whole point is they will *never* sell your information...they sell targeted AD space. They are advertisers just like Apple and Microsoft.

    On the point of privacy. Clearly you have not installed Windows 8. Its defaults are appalling, and your being insincere in implying Microsoft is better.

    The bottom line though is I personally would like a device where I can choose to install whatever OS. The reason being I personally quite like the look of the oversized trackpad on Chomebook , and the ability to install Debien, and it beong Good Value, all three features lacking on windows rt devices.

    Windows RT is going to be hell its hard to find actuate reliable information about anything. From wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_RT it claims.

    I wonder if their hack could be used on Windows RT to gain low-level access to the system, allowing one to essentially jailbreak the thing and let one side-load apps on it. I'm not planning to buy a Windows RT - tablet and one of the reasons is exactly the fact that I am only allowed to install stuff from Windows Store; a fully-working jailbreak would atleast make the thing slightly more useful.

    Why buy a closed device, when open devices like Googles Chromebook which is available cheaper and isn't locked. Excusing manufacturers for their abuse behaviour...and giving them money, never persuaded, and manufacturer to be more open.

    You get one part of the picture, but you are missing a huge part

    No I didn't Apple do not do a feature(dumb)phone, They do not do a good value smartphone. There is "special olympic" categories specially for the iphone. Apples marketshare has dropped from 23.1% to 15% in a couple of quarters thats a fact and it does not bode well.

    Apples revenue share in the smartphone market has not been growing its been shrinking. Its sales have been shrinking and in a launch quarter were static [in a growing market], while Android grew massively again!

    You say "these people are not and never will be iPhone customers" then your really saying Apples premium is simply not worth it., and I have to strongly agree.

    Because there is no such thing as "music" sales. Its one of the reasons that itunes has outgrown its usefulness....because itunes ties to do those things too, and fails .Its Apps; Music; Books; Magazines!? and Movies...Google have added the Nexus line to their shop, and I'm sure Amazon will add EVERYTHING. Content is king, and Apple had an advantage when it was just Music from the ipod days. It has all but squandered that advantage everyone does music today even Microsoft.

    So that's why Apple sold more iPhone 5s in the first weekend, 5 million, than almost any single Android phone model does over the entire life of being sold? Yeah, Apple is clearly doomed. Keep telling yourself that.

    No I'm not saying Apple is Doomed. I'm saying Apple needs to do more than just repeating "magical" on stage. Apple is falling behind. The fact that we are discussing a Desktop Application should give it away. 5 Million is not a big number over a weekend phone launch. Android activates! 1.3 Million daily.

    but to address your point there is nothing wrong [and get back on topic] with itunes because millions use it. Well I guess the counterargument is 5 times as many people are choosing Android over Apple. itunes is not the whole problem. It just shows that Apple is not evolving its devices, in a competitive manner. Its unnecessary and harmful lock-in.

    What an irrelevant comeback. Millions of users use iTunes just fine to buy and play back their music and to manage their iDevices. That you fail to be able to do so points squarely to PEBKAC.

    I'm glad, you blame me a user, it shows Apple software "Doesn't Work". Here is the thing though right now Apple share are dropping for two main reasons "Poor iPhone launch" [leading to massive marketshare loss]and "Massive losses of iPod sales".

    ...and your defending itunes. I [and those dumping Apple shares] are seeing a poor future for Apple, and Tablet sales are not going to hold it up. [Windows 8 might]. There is a major problem if "Millions of Users"[sic] are shopping elsewhere. I personally believe that Apple need to modernise, and they need to dump all this lock-in crap because its becoming a liability not an advantage.

    Personally though I use a better Music Player.

    Strange, I work with dozens of people that use it for those purposes every day. Melodramatic much?

    iTunes does just fine, sorry your hardware and OS are old and outdated and things lag but on my Macbook Air iTunes runs just as fast as any other app on my machine. Granted, Ping was stupid but its gone now. As to the rest of your rant, whatever. Millions of people use it successfully every single day, purchasing billions of songs and movies every year. The evidence is very much against you.

    No my OS is days old :) I use Linux. I'm sorry you spent do much on you hardware. As for evidence...I'm glad you mention that. Did you notice that Android hit 25 Billion Apps downloads before Apple. Did you notice Apple crying then they got caught pants down for forming a illegal cartel, because Amazon are better at selling books. Apple has there day, but Amazon/Google have stores now. Apples market share dropped from 23% to 15%. ...but ignoring your love for Apple...there are simply better music players out there.

    Apple is a niche market, dropping from 23% to 15%. You can blame me if it make you personally feel better. itunes was part of Apple lock-in, and nothing more. Given a more open; cheaper alternative; average people[sic] have chosen to use the devices that aren't locked into itunes. It was an advantage [to apple] in the old days when the iPod was king, with a monopoly [both content and device], but now users are looking closer at Apple devices, and asking why they are paying more...for less, and itunes is part of the problem.

    why is iTunes relevant anymore, as a music player it is awful, even as a three pane music browser its awful, as a way of interacting with Apple lecacy devices its awful. I must have used 10 different music players on the desktop [I'm using clementine] all better than itunes, and will work on linux[It didn't just work].

    It should never have crossed the line into movies and apps. Googles cloud based stores do not require such arcane methods of controlling your Android devices. connecting as a Mass Storage Device.

    I've been too kind itunes needs to be killed with fire. It neither works as a music player, or device management...it never did.

    There is no shipped vs sales argument. There maybe Shipped [Apple] vs Activated [Google], but Apple call shipments, sales.

    ...or use the Apple Store; Windows Store; Linux Repositories; Google store. which is the modern way of getting all software.

    Although you don't need the skills of RMS; whose contributions Like GCC are wonderful. a VB6 programmer could probably put something serviceable together in a few minutes.

    They have exactly lost money on this. They earn money from selling "search engine default to the highest bidder". The less users they have the less negotiating power they have, and that is not all they have lost, in addition mindshare, and brand power. This is especially harmful considering Mozilla is planning new markets.

    Must be something about 20-30 tabs and running for 7+ days at a time. Chrome has no issues with this.
    My anecdotal experience.

    As opposed to benchmarked or at least backed up with an about:memory. Your abnormal usage even if it were true is ridiculous considering how wonderful quit/restart works. Although in my equally useless anecdotal experience firefox runs great with more than that...want me to post a video :)

    Seriously Chrome is great browser, but so is Firefox.

    does anyone else think this is sad that Moz is bringing up how many downloads it lost to this "glitch". It's like saying we totally depend on Microsoft to make our browser popular. Otherwise we have no chance against IE or Chrome.

    Oh wait...

    Not waiting. The idea behind the ballot is simple, create an even footing for the browsers to compete. With all things being even Firefox does better. Lets face it nobody uses IE because its good. Personally I wonder if Microsoft was made to install Firefox as default it would have many downloads of IE ;)

    Personally I love competition, and would hate to go back to the dark days of IE 10.

    The bottom line is IE is simply not as good as the competition, not even close. Pick your own reasons for its uptick. Personally I think IE should be stripped completely from Windows, and no Apple/Linux bundling a browser is not defence. Personally I would be happy to have browsers removed from them too. The internet is too precious a resource.

    Not necessarily Microsoft that had people switching. Fire Firefox's ever growing memory footprint, and frequent update cycle that broke extensions are main reasons people stopped downloading FF.

    Wow. What a load of nonsense, Firefox has a tiny footprint stop spreading this lie. As for the frequent update cycle, that may be an enterprise issue, but why would it be for a home user. I stopped looking at extensions breaking a long time ago. I think you would have a hard lime listing one popular addon that is not working under firefox 16.

    If it wasn't for wallstreet and the constant need for "growth" quarter after quarter, I wonder how long it would be before Microsoft considers the cost of doing business in the EU to be too high to be worth it.

    They were convicted of abusing a monopoly and have to pay for it, but the market is completely different today than it was back then. And as much as it would make some people here happy, is a market with just Apple, Linux and Google best for customers? In world that's quickly becoming a phone/tablet world, Microsoft won't have a majority marketshare for very long, and the barrier for entry is incredibly high for another player to replace them...

    I think you must be a little confused about the importance of the EU, considering the US has only 500 Million compared to EU's 750 million. Its simply a larger market for Microsoft than the US. How arrogant are you?

    Microsoft is still the same abusive monopoly it always was. Just because its a massive failure in mobile [apart from the using the elf same abusive practice that got it slapped with the ballot in the first place], and a massive failure on the internet [despite using the self same practices that got it slapped with the ballot in the first place]

    Lets be honest Microsoft has not changed; Companies like Apple and Google simply had better products in markets where Microsoft wasn't, and now are rich enough not to be pushed around by Microsoft.

    Personally I would love to see Microsoft withdraw from the EU too. It would create competition that has sadly still lacking on the desktop.

    No there have been about 10 [depending on how you measure it] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefox_release_history, but look at the massive reduction is beta's and patch versions. To be fair there is the latest release and the ESR release, its not the nightmare that is IE which can't or don't update to the latest version, leaving a multiple versions to support in the wild, and ulike Firefox are not standard compliment.
