This project is a success, at least so far, and the story was buried in the newspaper. If the project crashed and burned the reporters would be screaming about NASA's latest failure. Each and every one of us would know exactly how much money was "wasted" on the project.

This is what bothers me the most about coverage of the space program. Most people can't name 3 astronauts that where on the latest shuttle mision, but they can name the last 3 failures. I think it is because it is easier to understand, and report, a satelite crashing into a planet than it is to understand a discovery such as this.

In contrast to the size of the universe, people are even smaller than microbes, and therefore of less importance. Afterall, one microbe (bacteria/virus) can infect and kill a person. I doubt that on person could do the same to the entire universe.

Too often, one or two ideas get a 5 rating, and the disenting postiongs are marked flamebait.

Regardless, thanks for creating a page as interesting and original as /.

Cures for genetic defects and disease are certanally a huge benefit from genetic engineering. One potential side effect that has not been mentioned is that genetic engineering would leave poor nations far behind. While industrial nations are curing disease at birth, Third World nations will have to continue using inadequate medical technology because they cannot afford gene theorapy. This would in effect create two races of humans, the powerful genetic engineered human and the "old-fashined" human. There would be no hope for the nation of Have-Nots to compete with a nation of Haves. Of course, all of this is idle speculation. This could usher in a Golden Age for all mankind. _
