I remember reading several weeks ago that this is exactly what MS is doing with Vista. I don't have an article link for you but the gist was that the code base had become so unwieldly that it was impossible to continue without a major rehaul of the foundation and the way that MS developed the OS.
about the text only games (and the lame graphic games that followed like "Kings Quest") was that you spent 3 hours trying to figure out what the stupid programmer wanted you to do to progress the story. and it usually came down to something stupid and irrational like "Shove hotdog into light socket" which would allow you to open the portcullis and move to the next infurating puzzle.
with today's modern games I can do whatever I want and make my own story.
Aren't you going to make one for IE? How about IE7?
