Ah, the ME example yet again. I have to say, since I run both Fedora and W2k3 clusters at my lab, that both OSes are solid. Never had a w2k3 crash, while Linux nodes pop off like popcorn; bad config I guess.
You better go ahead and say Linux is better though, or you'll get modded down.
One question I have is that everyone bitches about Microsoft being a monopoly, blah blah blah. But if hell freezes over and Linux takes over, whats to say they wont turn out the same? Sure, they give it away for free now because they have such a low market share, but if they ever got their shit together to make a product that worked on every setup (like Windows does 99% of time, Linux can't even detect my freakin sound card), they'll probably do the same.
Instead of using the radio\stereo for music, I use my PC.
Instead of using consoles, cards, board games, or whatever else for playing games, I use my PC.
Instead of buying a newspaper or watching the TV to find out news, I use my PC.
Instead of using a telephone to talk to my mates, I use my PC.
Instead of reading books, watching TV, talking to people to learn, I use my PC.
Instead of going to town to buy something, I can order\download it on my PC
Instead of having a social life, I have my PC.
Let em kill each other. Weed out the gene pool of these obsessive losers who spend all day upgrading their 'uber-orc' and get pissed off when their 'magical butt plug sword' gets stolen. fuck em.
So we have a spaceship that can take off, fly around space, have crew members repair it, dock with orbiting space stations, calculate everything that it takes to go re-enter the atmosphere...and it's called off because of clouds?
Then they would look at and say "God, this is an ugly OS...fonts look all nasty, un-responsive....hmm, i need to add my wireless card and fix my resolution...wheres the control panel...hmmm... edit kdoc.conf grep a|fucked.os >bs"...screw that, here's 80 bucks, gimme my Windows.
Pay a little more now, or keep continually paying more later?
Pay a little more and forget it, or have no life editing config files...I'll sacrifice a few dollars.
I totaly agree with you, Right now at my Home I have Mac (10.4), Win (xp and 2000) and Linux running, I plan on having at least one more box up and running with Free BSD and maybe another linux box within a couple of months.
Am I counting 5 computers? FIVE??!! I can understand 2, MAYBE 3...but good lord, there's no reason to have 5...time to invest in social interaction instead.
They come with the devices. If they came with MacOS and Linux drivers this would be fair play, but telling "Linux is worse 'cause it doesn't have drivers" is at least unfair.
Why isn't it fair? They don't come with MacOS or Linux drivers because they aren't as popular. Not to say that Microsoft is better than either (I prefer my Mac to XP), but more people use Windows because it's easier to accomplish common tasks that the average user uses.
...Then I would know it was "free"...but if it was just sitting there and wasn't labeled, I wouldn't just assume. Just like some grocery stores have people out front grilling sometimes, I dont just walk up to them and take something because it's outside the store and I'm passing it on my way in.
The point is if you don't have explicit permission, then you're stealing. For example, if I live across the street from a coffee shop and pick up their signal, but I'm not a patron, then I am stealing. Even though it;s broadcasting and I can pick it up, it's obviously meant for patrons only...twist it anyway you want, but thats what it is. Just because you can get to something, doesn't mean it's yours to take.
Ok, so if you were to walk into the store, grab something and eat it, and walk out without paying for it you'd expect the cops to pick you up for theft, right
Uhh..yea, thats pretty much what I said....
No, that isn't my example at all. I don't know who these unrelated people are that you're talking about. There are only two people in the analogy: The "hacker" and the AP owner.
The "people" are the signal, the grocery store is the AP, and then you have the hacker/thief...not sure I'm following what you're getting at...from your first reply to me that I have in italics, it seems as though you and I are on the same path...
Your analogy doesn't make quite fit. No, I don't own the grocery store. I also don't go in and steal, nor do I sit outside and try and rob anyone with groceries who come my way. I go in and PAY for what I want, otherwise I'm stealing. By your example, since I'm outside minding my own business, I should be able to rob anyone of their groceries because they are walking by me. Thank you, come again.
Try not playing your video games for 4 hour stretches...go live life, and use the video game for fun, not a substitute for social interaction. Then it will last longer.
Awesome. Only about a week late. Heard it on a podcast monday. Goodbye slashdot, you are always late and have reached official sucktivity.

This has happened. MS made a school remove GIMP, then refused grant to cover purchasing Photoshop.
And why would Microsoft have any say on Photoshop?

But it's only good if it goes towards something with Linux...otherwise, theres a conspiracy!
I give you...the Sphere of Fear..or..Planet Death...the Killing Ball? Death Moon? Giant Hurt Ball? The Deathticle!
