  1. Finally on A House For One Red Paperclip · · Score: 1

Am I the only one happy that this whole thing will finally come to an end so I can stop hearing about the stupid trades that are only happening so people can get publicity?

  2. Meh on Podcasting Goes Pay-to-Play · · Score: 1
I've been paying $2/month for This Week in Tech with Leo Laporte.

I like their way of doing things because I don't HAVE to pay to listen, but I willingly pay because I know it helps them with their costs.

I'll pay a few bucks a month for something I know I'll enjoy, forcing me to pay $7/month to listen to your show will make me shy away and look elsewhere for my content.

  3. I wonder on RIAA: Ripping CDs to iPod not 'Fair Use' · · Score: 1
I wonder how long this goes on before artists themselves jump ship away from their record companies that support RIAA.

With the iPod being so popular I can't imagine anyone (except RIAA themselves) being happy with this.

I honestly think that's the only way to stop this madness, not only boycott, but the artists need to take a stand as well. Possibly release iTunes only albums and never have to worry about going through RIAA to distribute their music.

  4. I don't get it... on How Songs Get Popular · · Score: 1

I tend to go by user reviews quite a bit, especially if it's in something I'm not familiar with. If I want to listen a genre of music I'm unfamiliar with, I'll look around and see what other people think. If a lot of people listen to it and rate it high, then it has a good chance of being pretty good and I'll buy into it. I mean, I dunno how many times I've chosen a product over another on amazon.com solely because one had better user reviews/ratings. I don't see how this pertains to crap being played on the radio though. That's whoever has the more money to market their musician the better chance they have of getting played. The more it's played, the more people hear it. The more people hear something, the more likely they are to buy it. I find smaller stations, especially ones that are on a college campus are way better for finding better quality music. Because they select their tracks based on their own good tastes and not who is bringing more money into their station.

  5. Re:That's pretty shocking. on RIAA Sues Woman Who Has Never Used a Computer · · Score: 1

My dad was 60 (just died a few months ago) and never touched a computer or turned one on and never had a desire to do so. He owned his own carepentry business and did everything with paper... invoices, taxes, everything. He said it was easier than trying to learn a new system.

  6. I work in the tech field in rural USA on Can Tech Save Small Town America? · · Score: 1

I've been a system admin for a company for 2 years now. We do a lot of outsourcing for companies. We have a department that does websites, I currently manage and maintain all of our webservers and we have something like 2500+ websites. We also have a department that does composition for books. We have a printing press and a warehouse for fulfillment duties. The company started out almost 6 years ago with 2 employees and we have nearly 40 employees now and we just did a little over 3 million dollars in sales this past year. This year we completely expect to almost double that as work has been coming in like crazy. The town I work in has a population around 300. We've been able to donate a lot of our money back into the town to spruce up the streets, help with the annual celebrations and just make the town look better. Granted, I don't get paid anywhere near what I could be getting paid in a city, but I do make a decent living in this area. I make more than a lot of people make who live here. I also grew up in this area so I'm not too far from friends I grew up with and family. The closest city is a good 2-3 hour drive from here so needless to say, I'm a little relieved I get to stay close by and still get to do the kind of job I enjoy doing. Rural America outsourcing is a good idea. We're not a bunch of mindless idiots out here who only know about cows and corn. Just up until recently a lot of the jobs we want to take are away from home, so we've had to move where the jobs are.

  7. PKd in China on PK'ing Banned in China For Minors · · Score: 1
I bet you anything some governmental figure was playing WoW... got PKd by a 12 year old and the 12 year old went on to taunt him by telling him he was PWNED.

They showed that kid who's the boss in China, didn't they?
