Linux 2.4.8 is Out

I agree. To customize the kernel for a system, one should be prepared to read a shitload of help screens during xconfig. There are alot of options in there and thay are hardware-specific so many need to be read, at least the first few times someone learns to configure the kernel.
That said, I think compiling the kernel is a fantastic learning experience and everyone should do it; just maybe not until they are already used to having to dig through documentation, use Google, etc.
Well, we would never put Linux within reach of our users, but even as tech support for our site, I am not allowed to run a so-called "hacker OS." (I work for a really big, paranoid bank).
What I don't get is what is wrong with Linux, but I haven't heard a word about not running any other flavor of Unix. We have a SCO box and I have an old Sparc10 on one side of my desk, but NO Linux allowed! I manage to get by with the posix tools for NT and some utils from sysinternals.com, but it just isn't quite the same:/
Agreed. I used to run Redhat 5.2 on a Toshiba 430CDT with 32MB RAM and the P-Tech theme for KDE (the one with the terminator face:) very cool and completely usable performance. That was until my company pronounced a moratorium on Linux installations on company PC's (which still stands BTW).
I am soon going to install OpenBSD 2.9 on a Tecra8000 since BSD!=Linux. It should run sweet.
Internal modem, eh? A Winmodem, perhaps? Those can be extra fun to make work. You might have to mknod the expected COM port (ttyS?) before the system will recognize it. Check/proc/pci for details on your hardware.
ATI Rage Mobility seems to work with XFree86 4.0, but you might want to search google yourself for details. Asking tech support to fix your Linux box is like asking a fish to ride a bicycle.
I BEGGED them to send me either a Latitude with Linux pre-loaded or a blank box with no OS. They flat-out REFUSED. They would only ship with MS Win2000 or WinME preinstalled and REFUSED to provide me with information so I could obtain a refund for the unused Windows license.
Me too. When I requested a box with no OS or with Linux pre-installed the sales rep. said she had no idea what I was talking about and said it couldn't be done.
After 5:00 p.m. one night I was installing Arcserve on a Novell 4.11 server. When it wouldn't load I began following these instructions from Cheyenne's knowledgebase.
2. Delete the objects in the following order: (1) Queue, (2) Queue Server, (3) Extended Schema
3. Create the objects in the following order: (1) Extended Schema, (2) Queue Server, (3) Queue
4. If Multiple ARCserve/IT host servers reside in the same NDS container, they will share a common Queue Server object.
Of course, by the time I got to step #4 I had already performed step #2. Doh! Ended up reinstalling Arcserve on 4 servers (and learned to read all the instructions before starting next time:)
'I'm not sure off the top of my head but it's in [some book]'
You make several good points. I would just like to add that I want to know if they have read the standard texts for the job. If the position is *nix Admin, I hope the candidate has read Unix System Administration Handbook. Perl programmers should have read the camel book, etc.
I'll take the guy who fires up the web browser and finds the answer in thirty seconds off Google a long time before the schmoe who spends ten minutes slogging through machine settings and racking his brain for it.
Yes and no. I want to see the candidate able to function without a 'net connection, if necessary. If s/he can't do anything without looking up the answer they aren't thinking and thinking==`troubleshooting step #1`.
Sorry, but this is more basic than that - geared more toward Windows users who would like to understand how to get around. Methinks you could benefit more from the HOWTOS
Now I have to install Kazaa to see if Adelphia will suspend my account. If they do, I will promptly cancel my service and they can say 'goodbye' to the $113/mo. I have paid them for the last year and a half (cable + cable modem). It really is too bad since my connection speed is great, but Earthlink DSL is now available for my home line so I can only lose so much.
Try Mandrake - it allows you to select a security level on installation. You don't have to be a guru to harden the system, just select the level of paranoia at which you would like to operate.
Or if you are really concerned about security install OpenBSD.
But any changes in the network's basic structure will face numerous obstacles, including resistance from traditionalists who believe that the Internet is popular precisely because it cannot be controlled by big companies.
Umm - did they happen to notice the DDOS attacks on Yahoo!, Amazon, etc. that were carried out for no apparent reason? Corporations seeking to control and prioritize the Internet are just begging to be hammered by every kiddie with a script. "Traditionalists" might not mind so much, either.
I read somewhere that people are afraid to buy new boxen because they feel they will lose half their data and capabilities in the transition.
I say it's time for people who want new computers to insist on their choice of operating system. Dell and Gateway allow you to select the OS you want to run (for now, at least). For those more technically savvy, we can have a shop build the PC and not install an OS.
I am aware of the pressure M$ puts on PC resellers to inform them when a customer requests a PC with no OS pre-installed, in fact I am counting on it! I want to get a call from Microsoft about potential licensing problems since I refused to have their OS installed on my shiny new system. Then I can explain that I run Linux and *BSD instead of their crap.
I agree with you as long as setting the other person straight is done calmly and maybe with a bit of humor. It is very easy to be misread as provoking the "jerk" and it is tempting too.
I think the situation has to rule - sometimes people just need some space to vent and should be left to do so. I have found that a friendly smirk works well - it is often difficult to interpret if it doesn't seem arrogant.
You don't have to use drunk driving as an example of light penalties for serious crimes. People charged with attempted *murder* can get 5 years or less in jail. Talk about putting lives at risk!
You said the magic words: "financial penalty". It is this sort of prosecution that makes me crazy - the FBI asked several companies for an "estimate" of damages incurred by Kevin Mitnik's hacking of their proprietary secrets and the answers were equally wild. $0.59/sec for each and every second of dnet bandwidth usage? Doubtful.
My friend just got an Earthlink connection and, yes it costs $49.95/mo. as it is a new account. However, the "free set-up" was free because they did nothing to set it up. Earthlink did not even provide a NIC card. It is more like "no set-up" than "free set-up".
BTW it is PPPoE and he is getting 256bps downstream at peak hours and up to 110KB/s during off-peak. Beats dialup, but still a bit pricey.
Yeah, but they have to be confined to a padded cell since the experience.
Here ya go.

Reading about RIP spoofing countermeasures at 2 a.m., eh? Cool.
I used to love those comics when I was a kid. Too bad I can't get them in the states (Kalle Anka)

Step up and take credit. You just know he reads /.

You may want to subscribe to security focus' mailing list on forensics and ask this question.
True that the benefit to TVA is nil, but the software is exploiting resources which otherwise go unused, so it's a Good Thing IMNSHO.
If it had her picture on it I would buy the Britney Spears' toenail clipper...
DOH! That would be really pricey, wouldn't it?
