  1. Re:HP Color Laserjet 4500... on Recommendations for High Volume Color Laser Printers? · · Score: 1

I would recommend the 4600 over the 4500 if you are going to use manual feed. The manual feed on the 4500 is way sensitive and jams frequently for apparently no reason.

The 4600 has a really weird manual input tray that draws the paper *under* the installed tray. Very strange. And there is a little plastic wheel on the right side of the manual feed tray that can snap off easily if you aren't careful.

All in all though, I would choose the 4600. We have three of them around here and I only ever really get problem calls about the 4500 (and we only have one of those).

I have had great experience with IBM's RMA process on hard drives. You just have to know which hoops to jump through. The magic word is "diagnostics". IBM offers free hard drive testing software here. Just run the fixed disk tests, which include:

    controller

    hi-low seek

    track to track seek

    random seek

    linear verify

    random verify

    SMART

and if it fails any you call their parts return at (800) 772-2227 and tell them it failed $TEST. They will ship you a new one with prepaid return shipping on the old one. I usually get the replacement next day, although they only promise 5 day service.

It's ironic this came up because I am in the process of running those diagnostics on a whole box (about 50) of old hard drives to see which ones we can use and which ones are going to meet my hammer :)

I have actually recommended AOL. Once. To a user who was like 70 years old when she got her first computer. It came with a free 6 mo. trial and she wanted the computer for email so I said why not try it out and if she didn't like it she could always switch. I figured the interface would be the most user friendly since they deal almost exclusively with n00bs. Unfortunately, she had trouble seeing the toolbar icons because they were so small and they were not scalable, so I think she ended up dumping AOL for MSN.
