  1. How do we REALLY know? on Earth's Temperature at Highest Levels in 400 Years · · Score: 1

How on earth do we know what the tempetures were 400 years ago? Records weren't even started until about 80-100 years ago, the rest is pure speculation. Even the early records aren't going to be very accurate, as measuring devices weren't super accurate. And according to them, we have wamred 1 degree over 400 years, which the allowance in variation for themometers is usuall 2-10 degrees. I mean you read 10 themometers you will get 10 different readings, nothing is accurate to within one degree. Really, we are doing a lot, but bottom line is the human race is growing and will produce more emissions as a result, this is not a bad thing, we will just have to adapt to changes as they come and they will come, but not for quite some time.

  2. Pricing... on A Workable Downloadable Movies Business Model? · · Score: 1

Well, if it had the same restrictions as music on iTunes does (very little as mentioned above), then I would say no more than 1/3 the price of the DVD if all of the Bonus Features came wiht the download or 1/4 the price of the DVD if they did not. Cut those prices in 1/2 if restrictions are similar to Music Match and others that only let you burn the stuff three times or other limitiations are imposed.

  3. A LOT on Identity Theft-What Can Really be Done w/o a SSN? · · Score: 1

Bottom line is there is usually a wa around having to give a SSN (In California for example you can just give the last four digits), if someone has the lasst four of your Credit Card number and your name they can find out all of the other information online with a little bit of effort, the more they get the easier it becomes.

  4. Technology IS there on Video iPod Oct 12? · · Score: 1

The technology is avilable to do this, you would need: 1. At least a 4" screen (could be done), but many portable dvd players only have 3.5" screens. 2. Use Flash memory (remeber someone, I think it was Motorola, just came out with something like a 300 GB flash card and uses even less enrgy than SD cards) 3. Use a Lithium Polymer battery, long life, lasts long on each charge and can be made into any shpae you choose, meaning it could be custom molded to use all empty space inside the ipod providing even larger batteries and is extremely lightweight. Bottom line this is easily doable, now you would need a wway to make existing DVD's and Movies from Camcorders and such to convert to a format that would work, as well as an Apple Movie store where you could download video, but there's no reason those things can't be done, although I doubt apple would give a way to break copy protection on comercial DVDs.

  5. Re: Maya on MAC and Linux on Autodesk Acquires Alias · · Score: 1

Here is my opinion: (This is leading up to the whole killing Maya on MAC and Linux thing, bear with me) 1. Microsoft will drop to selling one operating system for every 4 mac purchsed after the realeas of Windows Vista due to all of the DRM, only supporting Bluray or whatever one format they end up supporting, liscencing issues, etc. 2. Google and other companies will step in with enough web based aplications that it won't matter what OS we use. 3. People will switch more to Mac and Linux (esp. if it is preinstalled) 4. The above eventually kills Microsoft (within 5 years time). 5. If Autodesk still continues to produce software for Windows systems only for more than two years from now they will die with Microsoft and other players (esp. one that can use exiting AutoCAD Lisp routines without any reprogramming and save to an AutoCAD format perfectly, those are the two drawbacks to all other software rigt now that makes AutoCAD a nescesarry evil right now) to replace it without any real effort on thier part. Now will anyone at Autodesk or Microsoft take this post seriously? Of course not, but it's what will happen.

  6. Buying Online on Playing CDs a Privilege Not A Right · · Score: 1

I buy my music online partially because of this, but mostly because I only like one or two songs from most CDs and I will NOT pay $12-$20+ for one or two songs. Much better to pay $.99 per CD and be able to burn them to a CD myself, which I can then copy as I wish.

  7. Secure Computers????? Not any Windows! on Building Secure Computers? · · Score: 1

Most secure CAD software: AutoCAD (I am a drafter by profession, I should know) Allows to set passwords, as well as publishing certificates.

How to make the entire system secure:

Run MAC OS X on a Intel based motherboard (plenty of sites telling you how to do this).

In order to run AutoCAD you would need either Virtual PC, a copy of windows or running Wine using the fact that MAC can run Linux and Unix based software (the last is indeed the most secure, esp. if you set permissions for each folder and file in addition to the passwords).

Use one of the thumbprint mice (or other devices), that makes it impossible to even turn on the computer without the right finger print.

Also you a "removeable media key" these come in many shapes and sizes, basically you have to plug it in before the compuer can turn on, I would recommend putting it on a flash drive.

Yes, of course a removeable hard drive and tamper proof stickers (although they really aren't tamper proof in most cases).

Now if that wouldn't meet with DOD standards, there's a problem, basically no one but you would be able to even turn the computer on, let alone access the files.

  8. Re:What about Apple? on Windows Vista Faces Lawsuits · · Score: 1

This is somewhat true, you can patent ideas though so this could be a blatent patent infringement. But Microsoft would most likely win, as they have more money, but would be nice to see them loose. Really, this system seems very similar to OS X so far, so I would think Apple would at least try it.
