  1. Modern News... on Is Science Fiction the Opiate of the Geek Masses? · · Score: 1

Modern news seems to be based primarily on the same basis, speculative reality. I would prefer the news report the facts and let me develop my own perception rather than have it fed to me.

  2. A side job as an entrepreneurial salesman on What Do People in the IT Field Do for Side Jobs? · · Score: 1

Could always pick up a side job as an entrepreneur on Ebay, selling all of your obselete computer hardware so you can buy things that are more useful.

  3. A few ideas. on Uniquely Bright: Experiences and Tips? · · Score: 1

    1. Classes arn't everything, and I learned just as much outside of traditional classes at college as I did in class. Keep in mind that you can accomplish cool things in your own time, but people will admire you if you can stick with a larger project through completion. I would suggest that you get an idea for a longer term (at least 2 semesters long) project and stick with it though completion. Keep it well documented and presentable. Don't feel that you have to do it alone, get a partner or a small group.

    2. Take courses that keep you interested, but also make an effort to take courses such speach, writing, and communication. Most employers outside of college want people who can communicate well (both spoken and written) this is almost without exception. Make an effor to meet as many people as you can in classes, only about 1/4 of my friends in college were in my major (CS).

    3. Join clubs that may keep you motivated/interested. Many universities have computer clubs or ACM chapters (www.acm.org). Also don't forget other activities that may interest you (ski club, music, etc...) It's a good way to meet people with similar interests and get involved.

    4. If possible, look for an internship. And when you get ready to graduate, start applying for job (or grad school) during the fall of your senior year, otherwise you could be sitting around for a while without a real job after you get out.

That's what I think, but hey YMMV.

  4. The Gimp is wonderful, but... on MacGimp Reviewed, Available For Easy Download · · Score: 1

I hate managing so many individual windows. Until this changes, I will have to avoid the gimp. I prefer a single window with everthing in it ( that can be hidden on command). Otherwise, when I do web graphics ( usually my reason for gimp ). Normally, I would need one browser window open, one text editor open for html, and 15 gimp windows open, it's just not my cup of tea.

Despite It's downfalls, I have to agree that a lot of hard work has gone in to the gimp, and it is an excellet tool. I just prefer a different UI style.

  5. PowerQuest Drive Image on Experiences w/ Drive Imaging Software? · · Score: 1

I had the task of cloning over 200 machines with windows xp recently. I setup a machine the way I liked it, ran microsoft's sysprep utility and created an image file with powerquest drive image. I saved the image to a network drive.

I created a boot disk with drive image to map a network drive that contained the images and loaded driveImage.

After about 10-20min of transfer time the machine would be finished and I just had to boot it up, adjust some settings(about 10min), and It was done and ready to use, with all the applications working as expected.

  6. Marshall Brain - Robotic Nation on Robot Sales Are Exploding · · Score: 1

Have you read the Robotic Nation or manna articles by Marshall Brian.? Btw... MarshallBrain is the founder of howstuffworks.com. They descibe a possible future where robots may eliminate most horrible minimum wage jobs... and more. I think this could be a problem, but you judge for yourself. It's only one prespecitve.

  7. Some random stuff on Do-It-Yourself "Dungeons and Dragons" Film Review · · Score: 1

I thought it was odd, that the entire movie the dwarf didn't get one chance to use that very large axe of his to actually chop at someone. He attempted a few times, only to hit them with it, instead of cutting through anything. There was no indication that it was sharp at all, or heavy for that matter.
I thought that the ending was very cheezy, but thats another story all together.
