Or 3) realize that they have a product with high development cost but very low per-unit cost.
The simple fact is that games (especially on consoles) are overpriced. I've had a PS3 for almost a year now and I've only bought 1 game (and been given or borrowed another 3-4). I do enjoy playing but the prices are so outrageous that I'm not going to buy any game unless I'm sure I'll like it, which is very rare. If the prices were slashed in half, I'd buy at least 3 or 4 games a year.
If you wait 9 months to a year for the "hot" titles, you will almost always find them for less than half of their original price, even for PS3.
That was weird. Here's the rest of that sentence...
"I had opportunity to join a game development studio as a programmer, but could not afford the paycut from my current job as a programmer in an unrelated industry."
When 25 Million dollar games are not turning profits, then either:
1) Pay less to developers and artists
2) Make less expensive games
To me, (1) makes most sense. Isn't that how capitalism supposed to work?
... until you realize that game industry developers, artists, and producers are paid much less on average than their counterparts in more traditional business.
I had opportunity to join a game development studio as a programmer, but could not afford the paycu
Of course, it helps to have many things protected. I prefer to have SSH on a different port, with the firewall rules disallowing anyone to connect from anything but an authorized network (I love default DROP rules).
Simple precautions like that can go a long way. I used to get thousands of brute force login attempts every day on port 22. I moved ssh to a different port two years ago, and have not had even one since then.
I suspect that someday in a future version of the Mac OS, Ruby will be a first-class language for application development alongside or perhaps replacing Objective-C.
Wouldn't that require Ruby being a first-class development language in the first place?;)
Yeah, yeah, go on and mod me troll, I can handle it.
Let me tell you something that is 100% FACT! The climate is going to change. It always has, and it always will. No matter what happens, there will be people who ignore the fact that the climate has changed since the Earth began to cool and blame whatever changes they see now on the activities of man. It's the height of arrogance!
You are correct. And there are always those who blindly refuse to believe that humans can have any/possible/ impact on these natural cycles, which is its own kind of arrogance.
I'm not saying that we are or aren't impacting it - I'm only saying that unless you can prove it either way, you really don't know. Neither do I.
For example, why are protesters relevant? You're clueless if you don't get the idea that they are presenting an opposing viewpoint, but why do we need to know every anti-Democrat opinion there?
Because generally speaking, the reporting about the RNC is/certain/ to mention them. That's where bias leaks in, as GP stated - not so much in what is said, but what is left unsaid.
$50? more like $0.50
Call center can be located in India, where they pay $1 per hour if you are lucky. A competent call center worker can handle at least 5-6 calls per hour.
There's this little thing called "infrastructure" that's needed to support that level of efficiency... and it ain't free.
Except that this is simply a business terminating service that they never guarantee in the first place. There's no constitutional right to a trial by peers required when the issue at hand is a business deciding that it doesn't want to do business with you anymore.
I hope it happens. wire-based comms is limited but wireless may be the future. problem is, how to get enough rebel like people to DO this and make a real enough network that end-to-end means more than just down your street.
Good as far as it goes, but how do we get to servers and content overseas if not through the backbone of a major provider?
When you're motivated to get a task done, you get it done. If it's something you don't want to do, you're posting on slashdot instead.
This isn't time management, it's buckling down and doing what we have to do, so that we can do what we want to do.
Hmm... perhaps not so effective after all...

I finished this book two weeks ago. I started writing the review immediately after finishing the book, but I wanted to see how applying the principles helped me out.
Perhaps they didn't help you out at all, if it took you two weeks to finish an 8 paragraph review?
Unfortunately, the review didn't give enough to go on as far as why the book was good. I'm gonna go ahead and file this away with the various other "time management" systems, right along with "GTD" and others: it very likely takes more time to follow the program than you lose by trying to do too many things at once.
When somebody comes up with a good way to organize all of the/information/ that we deal with every day - and by good I mean "not requiring time or attention", give me a call.
... arg. Meant to qualify that as:... when they would have otherwise died due to a genetically inheritable condition... I would think this goes without saying, but I am sure if I don't post it some jackass will bring up car accidents or something.
We lost this battle with the advent of modern medicine. Anything we do that allows people to live to childbearing age when they would have otherwise died perpetuates bad genes.
ell, maybe, but along those lines it could be something similar, such as the mass amounts of poorly coded applications on Windows...so with that in mind they make the OS itself take less resources, to allow for the resources used by the crappy applications.
Wait, are you seriously suggesting that when everything else remains the same (hardware, software) except the OS, and performance of apps that used to work fine takes a sudden nosedive, it's somehow the application developers' faults and not the OS's? Even though the OS is the only thing that changed?
Indeed. I just close my browser when I'm done with it, and open when I need it. The start time (.5 - 2 seconds) is not the end of my world.
Its the same as restarting your computer/laptop every day to clear out shite that builds up.
I dunno about that - it really isn't necessary on modern OS's. I shut my laptop down once a week or less, and sleep it the rest of the time. And *gasp* it's running WinXP!
If you ride a motorcycle, the greatest cause of death is a woman on a cell phone in an SUV turning or pulling out right in front of you. No joking matter.
Oh, stop. I do ride, and the reason I was killed was... erm, wait.
Okay, let's fix your comment to be factually correct:
If you ride a motorcycle, the greatest cause of death is people making left turns across traffic, into your path, as if you weren't there..
And that is no joking matter. Open your eyes when driving, and don't make assumptions. Might save a life.

Can't get much mainstream than 60 minutes and evening news coverage.

Well said. It's popular to say that one hates something, but I think few people have any real idea of what it means.

Is this more or less humane I wonder.
Less! They make their customers eat once-frozen lobster, how cruel can you get?

In other words: "Hey, how about a BJ?" *slap* "Then I guess dinner's out of the question."
But why do you do what you dont want to do? What is the point of life if you can not enjoy it?
If you are so fortunate as to live a life wherein the only things you are required to do are those that you enjoy, cherish it.
This isn't time management, it's buckling down and doing what we have to do, so that we can do what we want to do.

Hah, you'd think after a hundred years, they'd just give up the debate as lost...
