That seems to be a more specific case than what GP posted, but that's the only one I know of. Not that it isn't big enough by itself - especially since users have no way of knowing ahead of time that they're screwed. But I think they will rarely if ever associate this with the concept of "DRM" - more like "Well shit, my BR player doesn't work with my TV. "

I also think the biggest issue is price. If a BR player was in the sub-100 range; and if discs were comparable in price to DVDs, I'd have both. I haven't had anyone try to sell me a new TV when looking around, but I don't doubt that it happens.

What surprises me is that so many people are exercising common sense when it comes to their finances and perceived "return on investment" of a player; perhaps there's hope yet.

Why is there an automatic assumption that when someone is "in it for the money", there is suddenly no longer any potential for them to be talented artists? Money and art are not mutually exclusive; and I am unsure why whenever an artist wants to get paid for commensurate to his talent, it's suddenly some kind of sin.

What does this have to do with what I posted: making a post that says only "Microsoft Sucks" will get you modded troll, just as quickly as making one that says "Linux Sucks". This has nothing to do with the modding issues you have had. If your post here is indicative, I suspect that the cursing and insulting might have more to do with the downmodding than your stance against linux or apple.

I disagree; I've seen a fair share of "Windows Sucks" first posts over the years that also tend to get modded down troll or flamebait. While there's a tendency towards groupthink here that can't be denied, it's not really that bad.

My question to you is: why did you pay so much for your house? I admit I am making assumptions here, based on what I see all around me.

A few years ago, people were paying 300, 400, 500k for modest houses - it does not take much to see that these little houses in suburbia were /not/ really worth that much money. Yet people made the purchases, turning a blind eye to the fact that their new house was vastly overvalued.

I am fortunate in that I purchased my house just before this ridiculous increase in prices occurred - but I also have not moved in the last few years even though I could have made a handsome profit on my current residence.

The reason was simple -- the idea of paying several times a house's value simply due to market conditions that could not last is absurd. 2000 square foot houses are not worth the kind of money that people were happily paying, and that banks were happily lending.

If I had bought my house a year later, I would be in your position too - because it would not have been worth what I paid for it. However, a year later, I would have passed on buying a house for that reason.

How could you plan on three months of payments, if you don't know what your payment will be from month to month after the initial period? Why would you make an assumption that the value of your house would never drop, thus preventing you from refinancing at a reasonable interest rate?

I'll concede the point in the first, though GP phrased it poorly IMO.

As to the second: Hell, I'm happy to drive 10 over the speed limit, yet I'll still expect laws against murder to be enforced.

Whether or not this is hypocrisy would depend on the individual. If my moral code says that laws which stop real harm to another person are OK, but laws which stop the potential for harm are not, there are a whole slew of things I would be bound to abide by. And many more that I would not not - this would make me consistent, not a hypocrite.

On the other hand, if my moral code said that all laws must be obeyed no matter what, then yes - speeding while expecting murderers to get caught would be hypocritical.
