Apple really needs to come out with something like this. I have a number of MAC shop clients and the artists have been seriously considering moving to XP for the Tablet functionality. The reason is that the Tablet can sense pressure, and a brush stroke is adjusted accordingly on the screen. The Waacom stuff can do drawing, but isn't pressure sensitive to this degree. There is about a 5k piece of equipment you can buy to do this with OSX, but its just not the same.
Vista is making some big strides on the Tablet end and is upping the sensitivity, so combined with the more accurate graphic color rendering, windows may be able to woo some artists away. Adobe and Quark products work well on both platforms. The only real thing Windows will be lacking is a decent font management tool.
This ThinkPad os exactly the kind of thing that I think could hurt apple at the end of the day. It may be easier for apple to get into this market now that they are moving to intel chips, since the hardware is already running on the x386 platform.
Seriously, go to hell. Its a funny twist on a painfully realistic problem the world faces. Terrorism doesn't exist because of "belligerent foreign policy" it exists because of fanatical extremists, at present almost entirely fanatical Muslims. They are religious zealots. And the societies affected by the terrorists are victims... not victims of "chauvinistic patriotism".
The more I think about it, the bigger an ass I think you are for that comment. I'm sure I'll be flamed to shit on/. for this, but you are a prick.
This is another example of media fluff for google. This isn't news for one. Everyone knows this is how google's ads have been displayed for a long time.
Second: "Because of this technology, users click ads 50 percent to 100 percent more often on Google than they do on Yahoo, Mr. Noto estimates,"
"estimates". They can't be serious, this guys sits around and arbitrarily makes "guess" percentages up based on his opinion. That is real scientific. What's shocking (well not really) is that the NY Times publishes a fluff piece as news. Yahoo claims to have very similar/same technology, and MS just started offering (on a limited basis) very similar/same technology, mostly (ironically) in France.
Let me remind you, the MA CIO is APPOINTED. The democrat senators that are going to hold up/stop this are ELECTED. Democrats historically have been anti-ms, so this is a bigger deal then you realize. Especially in our state. However, the reality is MS is offering a better solution.
As far as your FUD, corporate control or government control. I can only believe you were trying to be dramatic or cute. I don't see how you could be serious. But just in case you are, it is not the job of the government to promote software formats. The majority of people in society have spoken, and they overwhelmingly choose MS Word. Now the elected officials in the state are going to choose it as well. You may not like it, but they were elected to represent the people, not some appointed CIO with an agenda to promote Open Formats at any cost (e.g. the handicap).
"I'm glad you're in the
minority. " Actually, the opinion not to use
open format is NOT the minority. Maybe on/., but the rest of society hasn't
even heard of it, never mind thought of using it. So you are wrong. An unknown
is not the majority.
I didn't state my opinion was to not
use open format, so that implication is wrong as well.
As far as my stated opinion that
he made a bad case, I haven't heard anyone else argue my perspective so I can't
conclude it's the minority opinion. I'm sure fanboys like yourself will jump
all over it, but I'm not sure I would call you the majority. But if you want to
say so to make yourself feel better, I'll go along with it.
"Oh noes, he doesn't like Microsoft. What could
have provoked that?" If you read what I wrote, you would see that my
statement was in respect to the fact he was lying about his reasons. Since you
didn't refute that, and tried to make an irrelevant point, I can only conclude
you agree that he lied about his reasons.
"Maybe seeing how much better, cheaper, and
easier the alternatives are." This answer is irrelevant. It has nothing to do
with his stated reasons for the move. His job is to make a case for the move,
and he hasn't made it. You can do it for him, but that won't stop Open Format
from being rejected in MA by ELECTED officials. And it won't change that
fact that it was accepted by arbitrary decision made by an
APPOINTED one.
"He might be biased, but for good reason." Again, his bias is irrelevant. It is his stated
reasons that are at question. HE DIDN'T MAKE A GOOD CASE FOR THE MOVE (a.k.a
refer to my first post)!
You are a typical fan boy that
doesn't refute arguments, but spews mantra. I said he was dishonest about his
STATED reasons. I choose not to believe the CIO of my state is a complete idiot
(he may be, Romney has done lots of dumb shit, and appointing him good have been
another). I don't think he genuinely believes the new MS format will not be
available in 5-10 years. I think he is using a bad argument to avoid saying
how he really feels. He is promoting the Open Format agenda (which is his
prerogative as the cio), but not making a good case for the move.
your premise is flawed; the new ms format is fully documented, and public. After reading this article you will most likely change your mind, that is if you are intellectually honest. We both know you are not so you will continue to spread FUD, but I thought I would give you a link to you let you have confirmation that you are just spreading FUD.
"Microsoft offers open and royalty-free documentation and licenses for the Microsoft Office 2003 XML Reference Schemas" That is from the first paragraph. http://www.microsoft.com/office/xml/default.mspx
". . . in other words, one of the biggest gripes concerning the new iPod has been addressed."
"gripes"? I must have missed something, but everyone in the media, and all the articles I've seen, have had nothing but good things to say. Occasionally I see someone say, "well the screen is to small to watch a movie", but then they quickly say "BUT that isn't what apple was going for anyways. Praise Steve. Amen." They all talk about anything apple does as the second coming of Christ.
I guess I'm just shocked to see that there were any gripes about the video ipod.
What surprises me most is the examples the MA CIO uses in interviews. He says that he fears the MS documents won't be able to be opened years from now, and/or that people without the software won't be able to gain access.
The only problem with that statement is that MS has addressed long ago by publishing their document format for all new document versions. They also offer free readers (for years now) that people can download to view all of their office documents (PowerPoint, excel, word). Sounds like everything he was concerned about is addressed right their. Also there are tons of free readers all over the web that can open word files.
The truth: We all know that he isn't concerned about the files being able to be opened in years to come. He also isn't concerned about MASS citizens having the software. It's obvious that he doesn't like MS, and wants to give open format a boost. Right or wrong that is his motivation. And he is lying about it.
What's worse is he made a horrible case for the move. The argument would be like saying; I don't want police cars to be Ford cars because they use proprietary automotive parts. We will be locked into Ford, and I don't know that they will be about in 20 years to support our police cars. Besides there is a startup in Canada that Kia and Hyundai have backed as a good idea. Sure they don't use those parts yet, but they say they will soon. And when they start using these open car parts, Ford will no longer be used, or they will start using them too. It's a win win.
Look, if you want to go to open office to get out from under MS then do it. But don't say you are doing it for crap reasons. All this guy is doing is spreading FUD. And quite frankly it's intellectually dishonest for the/. crowd not to call him on it. Remember I'm not attacking the "move" to open formats, just this guy's shit reasons for it.
well it doesn't get rid of media player. It gets rid of things like media center. And some of the new tools being put into windows. But rest assured the core MS media software will be bundled with every version.
that is so stupid. If MS liked the stealing they wouldn't require activation and be such hard asses about it. Ever try to activate a copy more then once. Good luck, you call them and they will give you the hardest friggen time. They also wouldn't go after people legally that steal the software, but they have.
And please don't use corporate serials as your case. Corporate serials have to be there or a business would never by windows.
All that said, Vista uses a different license model and elminates the corporate serials for the premium version. Premium is the version most people would want (all the media toys for example are with the premium). The new corporate version is not one the average person would want, but one that only corporation would really be interestd in. What that does is it elminates a huge chunk of the stealing. They wouldn't be taking such drastic measures if they liked people stealing.
Stop making up stuff. And if bill gates views you with contempt (i doubt he does since I'm guessing he doesn't know you), its probably because you make up stupid stories about him.
It amazes me that you are so blinded by your hate for MS that you could actually believe this, never mind post it. I can only hope you meant it sarcastically.
MS is the most successful software/computer company in the history of the world. Their closest competitors are half their size. Ya, MS has no idea what works... they got to be the biggest company in the world by luck.
I'm sure there will be lots of funny posts saying "ya they broke the law blah blah blah". Bundling IE and Windows Media didn't make windows the most popular OS in the world. It may have made IE and Windows Media the most popular, but not Windows. They didn't bundle Office, and it isn't cheap, yet it is still the most popular office software in the world. What's your excuse for that one?
What blows my mind even more is people modded this at 3 and insightful (when I wrote this). I guess that's/. for ya.
that's pretty embarrassing. Too bad Sun doesn't have google or apple's distinguished media presence. This could have been a good thing! "Sun Microsystems's pay-per-use system is so incredible that it has out played even the smartest business in the world to date. It will take some time for the rest of the world to catch up with sun's amazing and revolutionary system."
Actually, all of the things I listed do not turn a profit. Each one costs far more then they make. On top of that they have not been very popular. So while a small community (like your friends that you sighted) might like using these ridiculously expensive tools for free... the reality is that Google is using the same model that all the internet dot bombs used. Spend spend spend, the good pr will get people to like us and we'll figure out a way to make a profit later.
Oh and your "beta" comment. You are the one who really should get a clue. There have been tons of articles talking about why Google leaves almost everything in beta... it's so they can avoid legal action, e.g. Google News.
Moving to the lawsuit. You must not be familiar with the law or legal precedent as it applies here. Maybe you just haven't followed the case. Google has effectively lost the print case before it has even gone to trial. For example, one of the founders throwing a temper tantrum on his blog while a case is pending... who does that? Well we know who does. The hail marry lynch pin they are trying to use is that each individual author has not contacted them; however organizations like the author's guild represent many many many authors. Google can't pick and choose who hands them legal documents on behalf of the authors.
By the way Google search appliance does not do good business. I don't know what world you are living in, but even Google has admitted that to date its not doing as well as they has hoped. They had promised improvements. Some businesses have tried it, but few are happy with it. I'd get into the technical reasons why it doesn't do well (I ordered one for a client when they first came out, so I also know first hand), but I doubt you have ever used one and it would be wasted.
Anyways, enjoy this Google stuff now, because it won't last if Google doesn't change their model, and soon. They need to start creating revenue other then their click ads from web search or they aren't going to last the decade. Yahoo and MS have far too much money, and make no mistake, they will catch Google's click ads. MSN is doing really well internationally as well as Yahoo. Don't forget that the two of them combined have more traffic then Google. They also have protal revenue that google hasn't been able to achieve. If MS buys into AOL, Yahoo becomes the biggest overnight.
In any case, as you can tell, I'm not a Google fan boy like yourself. I'm more of a realist.
It looks like another nail in the Google Print Coffin. Author's Guild and AAP both suing. Google must be so incredibly pissed today. I know they try to put on a good public face, but Eric Schmidt must be throwing a chair across the room right now saying "I'm gonna kill them".;-). With MS, Yahoo, and most importantly the authors and publishers backing this, Google Print is just about done.
Can we add this to the growing list of projects that Google has released that just haven't panned out, dare I say flopped? Google Search appliance, Google Web Accelerator, GTalk, Google Reader, Personalized Search, Google Ride Finder, Google Personalized Home Page, ummm... yes we can add it, Google Print. LOL.
Google should change their motto from "Don't be Evil" to "Throw enough shit against the wall, something will stick".
Go ahead flame away............... oh and by all means, all you google fan boys, write me and tell me how great those services are, it was just the rest of the world who rejected them that is stupid.
Well, to be fair you were wrong; "MS has publicly stated that they intend to kill google (and the CEO of google was named explicitly)". MS has NOT said that publicly. In fact Ballmer has denied publicly in an interview that he threw the chair, and I'd imagine if asked he would deny the statement as well. You could say he is lying, but there were only two people in the room, neither of them were us, which means it's a 50-50.
That said; let's pretend he did say it. I think anyone who is intellectually honest would say that it is not unreasonable for someone who just lost a prized employee to act out in frustration and say "I'm going to kill them", not literally KILL people, but more of a figurative, beat them in the business world. Kinda like "Fine take him, we don't need him, we are still going to win!" Athletes say they are going to kill the other team all the time, but that doesn't mean they walk on the field with a gun, it means that they think they are going to WIN.
As far as surprising that corporations in the same market place want to kill/beat each other, no I don't find that surprising. I also don't mind it. That mentality comes from competition and from a company's desire to grow and do well. Google wants to kill/beat Yahoo, just like they killed AltaVista or Lycos forcing them into submission and then to be sold off as scrap. It's called the free market, capitalism, the real world. As long as no laws are broken, I think its great.
If Ballmer didn't want to be the best and beat Google in the search market then MS should be looking for a new CEO. Just like if Eric Schmidt didn't want to beat MSN and Yahoo in search then Google should be looking for a new CEO.
Stop trying to make up ammo against MS by holding them to standards you wouldn't hold another company to. It just makes you side look petty and quite frankly its just stupid.
I have a 30in apple lcd, and very happy with it. does anyone knows who makes apple's? How does it hold up in comparison to this viewsonic.
The reason I ask, I have a 20in viewsonic as well, and it blows. I can't get many shades of white/grey to even register (using the same video card/ os). is this one going to be fast, but have similar problems?
where did they say it publically? I've read the an ex-employee who just quite said that Balmer said it to him privately in his office before throwing a chair. Did they say it somewhere else?
"Yeah, well I don't see NASA unseating Diet Coke any time soon. What's that? The two organisations offer radically different services? No shit. Since when does Google's profits depend on their nonexistent auction service?"
Seriously. Did you even read the article that started this post? I'd go tit for tat with you now, but my wife is nagging me to get off the computer, so i guess you'll have to wait until morning.
Slow down cowboy, you have responded allot of posts on this topic and your responses are these have baked few liners. You racing somebody to see who has the most posts?
Froogle is designed to take traffic from amazon's space. The idea is "Go to Froogle to buy something vs going to Amazon".
Stop being such a no it all. Maybe if you slowed down a bit and stopped posting every ten seconds you would get a few more things right.
how this helps Google's investors. They won't own the rights to the software, or anything created with these schools.
While I think its a "cool" "fun" "nice" thing Google is doing, it isn't creating revenue or raising the bottom line (other then the media having pre-mature orgasms over it).
Google is turning into an amazing manipulator of the media, but they still don't have any tangible revenue streams other then their click ads revenue. They are following the path of all the dot bombs to date.
Even look at GMail, wich many of us love, it has a puny share of the email market (hotmail and yahoo), and creates no real revenue.
I hate to say it, but Bill Gates is right. Google is just in a long honey moon phase prolonged by being a media darling. They are just throwing money around like there is no tomorrow.
It concerns me as an investor. PayPal/eBay won't go down without a huge fight. Google's attempt to cut into Amazon's market with Froogle flopped, and quite frankly, I don't see them unseating eBay anytime soon.
I say give them two more years and their stock will be below yahoo and dropping fast.

Go ahead flame away............... oh and by all means, all you google fan boys, write me and tell me how great those services are, it was just the rest of the world who rejected them that is stupid.
the US/EU internet control threads.
add another one the running tally of things this "stupid country" has done to change the face of the world.
Following your logic; until very recently MS used yahoo for all their click ads, yahoo ads on MSN? Oh my... "therefore is not in competition with it."
great logic.
Maybe if you slowed down a bit and stopped posting every ten seconds you would get a few more things right.
lol, well they let Linux in...
anyways I think the policy is just no christian religion in state schools.
how this helps Google's investors.
Verisign wound up only controlling the "US internet and China, Cuba, and France create their own .com TLD separate from ours.
What happens to all the billions of computers that try to go to indowsupdate.microsoft.com?
