  1. Re:pirate repellents on Mariners Develop High Tech Pirate Repellents · · Score: 0

A few observations: There are thousands of vessels in the danger zone at any given time, several times that many heading into or out of it as well. That would require perhaps over a hundred thousand marines, mercenaries, whatever, to be aboard ships from port to port to provide coverage for each one that passes through the area. Merchant vessels are prohibited by international treaty from being armed. So far, the pirates have not executed any hostages (except when a rescue is taking place). If the force equation tilts upward, they may begin to kill instead of capture. Untrained seamen are not likely to provide coordinated, effective resistance with light weapons. Cost/benefit analysis has thus far not driven the shippers to change the situation. Why would a government assume the huge cost of effectively protecting an entire region when only a small percentage of ships traversing it are under its flag? No easy answers here.

  6. Perpetual Motion does not equal Free Energy on Yet Another Perpetual Motion Device · · Score: 1

If one concedes that in an isolated, perfect system, a perpetual motion machine could be constructed (with magnets, or gravity, or whatever method you choose), the point is that you cannot withdraw any energy from the system, or it will fail. "Free" energy has to come from somewhere. It cannot be created or destroyed. Somehow I bet no one reads this.

  8. "anti-gravity" flight on First Steps Toward Artificial Gravity · · Score: 1

The idea that one could mount a gravity generator on "top" of a ship, and use the generator to pull the ship away from the ground is patently absurd. Not only would the ship be pulled toward the generator, but so would the ground. You would actually increase the attraction of the two masses (ship and ground). Also, this would simply increase the net mass of the ship with generator by the mass of the generator. Essentially, you'd just be making the ship act more massively, not less. Now, true antigravity wavicles would (and I believe this is what the article is addressing) potentially be usable to cancel out the nominal gravity in an area or for an object. Perhaps one could eventually discover/create an anti-gravitational force that would push masses apart instead of pulling them together. It is odd that the only fundamental force that seems to have no real-world negative counterpart is gravity. Oh well, what do I know anyway?

Not super-rats; rats that get fat and won't die from heart attacks. Hardly a super-power. The self-assembling nature of these nanopeptides is the most interesting aspect of this. It should reduce or eliminate the need for repeat administrations. Also, there is likely no downside from this type of treatment; it shouldn't prevent any healing or advantageous adaptation. Before anyone reminds me, yes, this is a first step, and we're at least several years from human use. And yes, it's unlikely that this will be one of the few successes out of the many trials. But it's still good research!

Yes, the original definition (the first one, in your link) arose from the Roman practice of punishing unsuccessful legions by killing one man in ten. It has been sloppily used, much more recently, to generally suggest massive casualties within a population. I personally think the modern usage sucks, since it deviates from the original by so much, and there are plenty of other good words out there that mean the same thing, only more correctly: slaughtered, obliterated, massacred, destroyed, wiped out, annihilated, etc.
