Later, when it starts to rain, you find that you've only got a windshield wiper on the passenger side. So, you pull over to the side of the road, and discover that there's no hazard lights either. Hey! There aren't any lights on this car at all! Luckily, brakes seem to have made the cut.... hope the airbags are there....
Funny but not quite applicable. How difficult would it be to pull out the CD again and install the specific app that you need? Compare that to trying to get an airbag retrofitted on a car.
I have to agree. We have DSL at work and the service has been quite spotty. It takes close to a week for anybody to look into service complaints. My MediaOne cable modem at home has been flawless. The only time there was ever a problem was when they re-numbered the subnet and I had to reboot my firewall/router to get DHCP to renew the lease with the new info.

I'm offended by this as a half Jew and a half Serb. Muslims are FAR less prosecuted in Serbia than Jews, Gipsies and Serbs are in Kosovo
I don't believe that he intended the list to be exhaustive. Obviously, there are persecuted people in all the world. He was merely pointing out some examples.
The Mormon example is particularly chilling. Until 1980, there was an extermination order in Missouri against all Mormons. In other words, if you were Mormon and in Missouri anybody could murder you for the simple fact that you belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The state government of Missouri had granted a legal right to kill based solely on religion!
If you outlaw musktets, only outlaws will have muskets. . . On second thought, that may be a good way to curb violence. Can you imagine a gang war with muskets.
"Yo G, shoot that mofo!"
"Chill biatch, I'm still packin' another wad in my musket!"
We should all make personal pages with "for Dummies" titles, like My Vacation Pictures for Dummies. Then send an e-mail (courteous, of course) to Isabelle Drewelow at IDrewelow@idgbooks.com letting her know of about the site.
In a day or two, we can catalog their response to the/. effect as they attempt to quash all our pages!

having the source code can definitely help track down some annoying bugs. I wonder how many "Open Source" fanatics actually read or write source code!
Do you see flaw in your logic? If you track down a bug in the source, the next step is to fix the bug and recompile.
In my day job, I write medical applications. We purchase 3rd party components to provide functionality such as API-level access to Oracle. Availability of source is high on the list when deciding which components to purchase. I may never fix a bug but the security and peace of mind that source provides is priceless.
I do think it might be in Palm's best interest to opensource PalmOS as a preemptive strike against MS attempting to force corporate hands (i.e. we can't guarantee that your Win2K machines will be able to HotSync properly after the next service pack release).
This is just hyperbole, right? You can't be serious. HotSync is just a standard serial connection. The client software deals with the data internally after it gets it from the serial buffer.
To break this, they'd have to break serial data communication completely. On second thought, I guess you were serious.:)
Um, Groton Database Systems did begat Interbase. Borland bought Interbase/Groton Database Systems.
My child, I see that you have lost your way and seek to reprove he who is above reproach. Repent ye and my judgement shall be merciful, lest the great abomination shall overcome thy spirit.
Ye did suppose to know my intent and it this ye didst sin. It thy presumptuous zeal, thou didst not give note to the patriarchal order of the lineage that I didst give thee. Nevertheless, thou good and faithful servant hast done well to record the matriarchal lineage of Interbase. Now go thy way and sin no more.
You mean products like Delphi, which is made by Borland (now owned by Correl, a merge resulting in renaming them Inprise).
The only thing worse than an incorrect post is a post correcting it that is also incorrect.
In the beginning, there was the land called Bor, and Borland was good. Borland begat InterBase and Paradox and Quattro Pro and Turbo Pascal and Delphi and C++ Builder and J Builder. And the Win32 developers did rejoice.
Behold, a curse came upon the Borlanders and that curse was Del Yocam. This evil leader, full of guile, changed the name to Inprise to capitalize on the buzzword "Enterprise". There was much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth in all the land.
The fairy stockholders were displeased with these actions and did cause that the stock price should plummet. After many fortnights, Borland rose again from the ashes of Inprise as a beacon of hope for all to follow. The evil Del was banished and all rejoiced.
From the vast hinterlands to the north came courting a certain Micheal Cowpland of Corel. This Cowpland did offer bounteous riches that he might own Borland and the Borlanders were beguiled by his cunning. Thus, Borland became united with Corel and Inprise was banished entirely.
They have been saying "Red Hat Compatible" for the last few versions. I believe that started with 6.0 IIRC. They stopped being a Red Hat knock-off after 5.x
UPS is very good about paying claims, as long as packaging guidelines were followed. Act early and follow up.
That's been your experience because you work for a company that provides a large revenue stream for UPS. I have a damaged package claim that has been in the works for 6 months and they are still trying to figure out how to proceed.
Bottom line: If you aren't a big fish, they will do all they can to weasel out of paying the claim.
Just because your data is striped across multiple volumes to aid recovery, it still only reads from the one volume
That is simply not true. Reads in RAID 5 occur from all volumes where a stripe resides. A file never exists on a single volume in RAID 5 unless it is smaller than the stripe size.
Physical threats over the computer CAN be criminal if they are believed to be real.
I believe this to be the key point. If you hold up a store with an unloaded gun, the fact that you had no bullets, therefore, no way of inflicting harm is not relevant. You acted on the pretense that the gun was loaded so your threat was believed to be real in the same way as the physical threats by the defendant were percieved as real. The intentions of the defendant are irrelevant.
I just returned from the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, MA. I took my son and daughter to see the George Washington exhibit. I didn't feel the need to see it because I look upon George Washington as a celebrity. I feel a deep sense of gratitude towards him and the many other men and women who took such great risks to secure our freedom and I want my children to understand who these people were.
George Washington is inextricably part of the culture of the United States. It is somewhat comforting that he still is in our collective minds, considering the generally short attention span that we seem to have developed.
I wouldn't call myself paranoid. I'm not Russian, I've never been to Russia and I've never know any Russians. It just struck me as extremely out-of-place when I read the comment and I drew the only rational conclusion I could. I will give you the immediately part but I feel you are off-base about the irrational accusation.
Let's just say, I am extremely sensitive to negative stereotypes. You're a geek, you understand, right?

To quote another post, "just because it's possible, doesn't mean you should do it."

Yes my child, my omission was intentional. Do you suppose to know my will in all things? Repent ye and return to the path that leads unto me.

If the first post merely restated the content of the news item, that would be redundant.
You're right about Vernon Reid and Living Color. I actually liked their music and Vernon sure knew his way around the fret board.

Standard Oil was divided up by the Supreme Court. I don't know who participated in the AT&T split.

Are you attempting to make a point?
Why don't you go ahead and spit it out because I've tried to read between the lines and all I see is a misguided attempt to defame an entire nation.
