Actually this is no big surprise, but then again the fear factor kicks in here as far as factual information from the US government, or the general press. Waco is a perfect example of what the goverment DID, then covered up, (even though actual footage showed different, which was surpressed) and "now" it's being downplayed.
Those in the USA should remember that WE have the right to tell our own government what to do, NOT the other way around! A pointer to all of you special interest groups, which can KMRA.;)
Actually, this is story is outdated by a few weeks, (don't remember the url though) but IMHO this is a good thing. First off, I personally run SuSE at home, but at work we do the RH thing, mainly due to our Raid controllers. IF SuSE would get off their duff and include the "freely available source code into the distrib" then I wouldn't have a problem. Email response yet to come after 1.5 months, btw. Security patches for SuSE seem to lack, and definately package updates are WAY behind RH.
Possibly SuSE will read this and fix these minor, but yet important issues. (along with RH btw)
First off, I really don't think many of us are that surprised by Microsofts comments. I knew it was coming. All one has to do is look at what happened to OS/2, which is/was a good OS, but IBM doesn't know jack about marketing..., and then there's Microsoft. Which, IMHO has a great marketing dept. (even with all the FUD)
Personally, I have no use for any of the MS products..., but I still have to support them at work, (cursing every day) but then again, our linux boxes just keep on humming along.;)
I had a job offer back in '91 to work in Austrailia, and I'm glad I didn't take it. These type of laws are *total* BS from the word go! I assume that the Austrailian goverment likes to suck up to NSA, (or add a US goverment agency here) so they can get more funding. Mandaory filtering, like Net Nanny or ANY other filtering software is actually as efficient as like saying that buying a new car is guarenteed for 5 years from *any* mechicical problems.;) And yes, my spelling sucks.;)
Here's a hint to the goverment officials "down under", form the clay like substance, insert that weird looking miniture aaa device and power up. POOF!
The laws popping up the in good 'ole USA are just getting me to the point of moving right out of the country, period. Anyone need a good sys admin for a ISP running Linux?;)
I mean, when you buy software off the shelf now, just by "opening" it you agree to the licensing crap that you sometimes can't read until you open it anyway! Amazing....
Peronally, I find it amusing about all of the gripes about this distrib. So, it comes with a ton of "optionally" installed software..., wow, you get to *choose* what you want to install. (?)
I've ran SuSE since around 5.1, and although I don't go out of my way to buy *every* release, (went from 5.3 to 6.1 recently) it's still an option for those that don't like to upgrade via ftp or source. My current 6.1 is running the latest kernel, updated.src, etc. I also use Vmware, no problems..., no need for Real Audio though. I also use RH 6 at work, each of which have their good and bad points.
My point? Just once I'd like to read about Linux (all distribs) in a positive note vs all the *BS* about what is better at what! Ala, if you don't want to install this or that, then DON'T! It's not that complicated. This crap reminds me of the OS/2 vs Windows debate, except we're bitching amongist ourselves. (right into MS's hands!!)
I've been running SuSE since 5.1. I bought each distrib (5.1, 5.3) directly through SuSE. I skipped 6.0 and bought 6.1 from Best Buy for $29.95 I believe. Great buy, beats the hell out of purchasing RH 6 for $79.95.;) Since I saved all of that money, I went and bought WordPerfect 8 for Linux from Best Buy also. (I don't mind spending money for non-MS products.;)
Now, I'd really be content if I could purchase Civ Call to Power and other Linux games from the rack.
This software works well with our 24x6 auto changer from HP. There are 5 24GB tapes, and one cleaning tape. Matter of fact this is the same drive that is used in house by the folks that make BRU 2000. (I'm just a happy customer btw.)
Unfortunatly I'm still running 2.0.36, so in a nutshell I'm SOL. Granted, I'll be upgrading to 2.2.+ tree, but my point is others still using the older kernels are still screwed. Not that I really give a damn, but..., it's a FYI.
Except for one thing, OS/2 is D.O.A. Don't get me wrong, I've ran that os since like 1992 and then got sick of IBM's *lack* of effective marketing. Personally, I would have hijacked some key people from MS. Another example of good product with uneffective marketing, lack of clout, and MS kicking butt in the advertising market. (and IBM paying a royality for each copy of OS/2 sold to MS..., which must have hurt.)
Otherwise, OS/2 rocked, but then again I'm happier than hell with Linux!;)
I personally remember SCO's Xenix release, the headaches involved with a particular client and SCO's $100 a QUESTION. (ala, what..., where and how amounted to $300.00 US) One particular thing comes to mind: USR 14.4 modem support, I hacked for a few days to get the damn thing to work, "their" tech support asked me how the hell I did it and then being nice guy I am, faxed them the info. I'm positive I never received credit, and I don't care..., but I DO hate being catogorized as a "nobody" just because I use Linux now.
Note: Now that I think about it a bit, this had to be done under a version or two after Xenix. 4.?
If you guys are coming to Comdex down in Chicago, (or if Copyleft is there) I'll pick up some new clothes.;) Btw, polo shirts would be a good idea also.
I'm sure that Dell's policy will change in the near future for single box purchases. They will need to figure out hardware compatability issues, obviously. Personally, I'd buy a server/workstation from VA Research, thus making my purchasing easier.;)
After reading the article, AND not having a chance to flame 'um directly..., I'm depressed! Total FUD. Hell, Linux is scaleable, works wonders with older hardware, and hopefully I'll be bringing up a new ISP with it shortly..., without all of the licencing and MS burps.
Your reply is totally out of line, in a nutshell you are the asshole. This should be a adult conversation (or there about's) about freshmeat, not some type of total flame on another person's view of the subject at hand. They had a opinion and stated it, you just flamed 'um big time! Sniff another can of paint and get back to me.;)
First off, the TWO web sites I visit every day are Slashdot and Freshmeat. For those of you that bashed 'n trashed scoop for the new layout of the web site..., you suck. (in a nutshell) He provides us all with a cool place to grab the latest and greatest software for Linux..., and it's FREE! What else could you ask for? Personally, I think the new look is refreshing. Poof!

"You can never break it, so you can't press something wrong," said one student.
That's a pretty bold statement, in this day and age.

Life in the digital age sucks, but the pic is here to stay guys!
Seems like the new server is working *very* well! This is nice..., now my favorite web site is even faster. ;) Thanks /.!
