GnomeWare on Copyleft

NiftyName writes "Finally, the new shirts/hats are up on copy left. I've been waiting for these for a long time now! " And they look cool too-while you're over there, buy some of the Slashdot stuff too. I've looked in your closet. You need it.

Much of it is tradition, I guess. Unix has a strong C tradition, and many geeks stick to it, while professional coders do big projects in C++. A lot of complaints are about the usage of C++ instead of C, so this may be a point. (In the professional world, people laugh at you if you wan't to code a large GUI project in plain C)

Then, a lot of US geeks tend to listen to the FSF, which made a massive anti-KDE pro-Gnome campaign, as we all know. Geeks/nerds in Europe seem to be more open-minded and more technically inclined (as opposed to ideology/philosophy), according to my experience.

While I like some technical aspects of Gnome, something really bugs me:
They've sold their soul to RedHat, which has become rather 'unLinuxish' recently.
    Examples:
    • Premature release of Gnome just to meet RedHat's release date (Linuxexpo)
    • Extreme marketing hype, also used to throw mud on competitors (KDE,Caldera,SuSE; e.g. Miguel's interviews)
    • Presenting Gnome as "Ready for the average user" which it clearly wasn't
    • Presenting it as "the only/main/current" Linux desktop, which lead the press to conclude that "Linux isn't ready for the Desktop" while only Gnome wasn't
I'd say all this are strategies also used by M$ and the like, and this makes Gnome look extremely "ungeekish".

For all good things they've done to Linux, it's time to remind RedHat and Gnome that Linux isn't just about Free Software, but also about Choice, Fairness and Not Misleading the Users.
