Some people need X11 and some don't. If local desktop performance and modern windowing behaviour can be achieved by completely bypassing XFree86 and its associated window manager and other processes then it should be done.
I was wondering the same reason. Why cant DirectFB be the driver/interface for the Display, and let Xfree just port the Xserver to the OS. Xfree doesnt need Driver support anymore, All drivers are for DirectFB now.
Xfree for cygwin doesnt care what GFX card I use, and I can use it in rootless mode. Only thing I wonder is if Xfree can support all the hardware features in DirectFB. (And widget support doesnt rely on the gfx card, just the xserver, so no problem with X network transperancy)
Sounds like a great Idea to me, let xfree be a straight xserver, and let DirectFB handle the gfx drivers. (Then we dont have to wait for Xfree to put the driver fixes that has been shelved for months, example ATI's submissions, and the reason for the Xfree spinoff.)
I like the idea of someone finally allowing you to download single songs for under a buck, and allowing you to use a format with out DRM. Reading the FAQ, looks like Mpeg4 AAC sounds better at 128K than MP3, so even better.
Very impressive, thou have to wait to see how big the artist collection is. It states "Everything", thats pretty impressive if true. Need to test that old database out with some techno/metal/free music after I get home (No macs at work...)
I wonder, if I no longer buy whole CD's just the one song I want, wont this put the record companies out of business?
Also, Apple can do this, but MP3.com can't? - Do you fink?
After all, only terrorists don't want anyone to know how many machines they've got connected to their cable/DSL modem, right?
Hey, thats a great Idea, lets License every IP! That way the government can get a few billion in tax money! I bet the RIAA/MPAA would love access to a database like that!
Nice, besides an ad for Sflow, just shows some more holes we need to patch, and more standards to break.
OS fingerprinting was nice, but now some boxes are replying as a tandy coco, its a very amusing battle. Now TTL is being used to determine multiple Nat'ed IPs. I'm sure someone will write a nice nat module for linux/etc to bypass this also. Seems like the endless cycle of control freaks loosing control.
BTW, not sure which ISPs care about NAT, but there are very very large NAT friendly ISP's out there. (Speakeasy for one)
Switching to Linux/Bsd/OSX full time is easy, the only time I ever go back to my windows box is for games. Pushing linux/osx on a windows gamer is the wrong direction to go. Pushing linux/osx on a person who is a desktop user is postive experience. WineX (while good) is geared towards the more techincal user, and is not yet "install and play" simple. - Do you use CS Skins?
The slowness of OS X has zippo to do with the configuration mechanism and everything to do with Mach and Quartz.
And the reasons are the way Apple implemented mach and quartz. Apple has a multitasking OS, but left out threading on some key applications and system processes. Nice to see that apple is embracing the multitasking enviroment and allowing people to have background sessions (like windows fast user switching).
The only thing that made one correspondence count and another not is if one was not from a constituent address.
I don't know if this is a good thing, but soon as my Congress critter learned I'm an interested constituent, my email, phone and mail have been bombarded with invites for town hall meetings and current issue newsletters.
Too bad all they want is my support, in the name of political fundraisings.
Her job was posted right? Federal law right requires the job to be posted. What GS level was her job posted at?
Also, While we are at it. This is Homeland security, they should have an oversight committee, not a self serving privacy group. (IMHO) - We are born brave, trusting and greedy, and most of us remain greedy. - Author Unknown
And why wouldnt they release a x86 port on hardware? None.
In the USA we have the DMCA, which would put a stop to anyone reverse engineering any such Apple clone. Reverse engineering already failed in the courts.
Now all they have to do is implement driver support for every piece of i386 hardware known to man, and it'll be ready to blow Windows out of the market.
Even microsoft doesnt support every piece of i386 hardware.
And if OSX was ported to x86 hardware, it wouldnt be a 386 chip.
Correct, there are some major problems with the GUI, Finder, and the file system and multithreading is quite poor for a BSD based OS. For a dual processor machine, the performance of the GUI is a large problem. Finder should not hang your GUI. SMB mounting a share should not reboot your PC, Switching between applications should be much quicker.
But after all the problems, the OS is solid. This OS does not need to be redesigned, just updated with fixes. Apple has the right product, if they can fix the problems, this OS will be perfect. Also, this might one of the reasons they have not released a x86 port. Multithreading support and stability fixes first.
With TiVo's release of the much anticipated Home Media Option (anticipated by me, anyway), I renewed my quest to find a way to integrate my computer's media files with my TV. TiVo's solution is not an option for me, because I don't have a Series2, and even if I did, the TiVo solution doesn't work with DirecTV units (for now, anyway).
I have a DirectTV Tivo, Better than a normal Tivo (can record 2 shows at once), but still wont allow you to download video. Picked up a ReplayTV with Ethernet jack, output my tivo into the replay TV, and then used DVArchive to copy the videos over to my PC or MAC. For TV output, I just plugged my 2nd video port out from my Ati 9700 to the SVHS in on the tv.
Seems to work ok, thou the video quality is far from perfect quality that the digital Tivo records in. I was tempted to see the quality on video in on the Ati all in wonder 9700. But too expensive at the moment to try. I have an mpeg1/2 hardware encoder, but it looses audio sync after 45 minutes (known dazzle problem)
The main problem with using a 3rd party machine, (other than tivo) is you miss applications or file support on your PC. (not the use of qcast...) Even with a cheap 300 dollar kit pc with video out/in and a nic/wifi seems to better solution than software and ps2/xbox.
I've tried Safari in one of those Apple stores in the mall, but I think that I'm spoiled from using Opera, because I find that Opera outperforms Safari by at least a factor of two, even on my 500MHz machine at work.
I do think Safari needs to be threaded, it seems to pause when loading tabs in the background, just as the older mozilla 1.0 did. On mozilla I'd open a bug report, not sure where to report problems with Safari.
I really miss "middle mouse" to open new links on Mac browsers. This seems to be missing on Mozilla/Camino also. (Mac OSX that is..)
Safari is pretty nice looking, but It doesnt seem to be fully threaded on loading tabs in the background. I can hang it when loading 3-4 tabs, it freezes like mozilla 1.0 did before the fixed it.
BTW, I know there are key combos to open new tabs in Safari, the point is, you shouldnt need two hands to surf with a webbrowser (no porn jokes please.)
The "Lawful interception" or we call it the "CALEA Box" sits on the backbone network. So you have BSC (Base station) SGSN (Service node) GGSN (Gateway Node) Backbone/Internet.
While we can sniff all data, GTP traffic to other Intercarriers is still encrypted. We can track each packet from the on the GB/GN links for performance/stats, but its still encrypted. When its GI traffic, this is where law enforcement sniffs, raw unencoded IP traffic. (Yes they use warrents, and they dont control our box, Sys-admins do.)
For 3G, mobiles use an APN (Access point node) on their SIM card to describe their service carrier and service type. I dont see WiFi using SIM cards, when they are IP based, and 3G mobiles are service based. The 3G device establishs a session that is quite complicated (Uses multiple authentications, voice network, GGSN, and some kind of Radius service.) The GGSN tracks all billing issues and sends to the billing department, and handles the main core function of the GTP tunnel. The SGSN handles BSC's for each area, controlling handoffs between BSCs and other SGSNs (Ours or Roaming partners)
WiFi is like the BSC, its the last link of the chain. Its the airlink, like the BSC. It doesnt provide for all the key support issues a telco would need to provide service. Thou I'm sure someone has come up with some Radius/billing and fraud protection, but I havent seen it.
This simultaneously blows away 3G mobile and 802.11 technologies.
Some things about 3G vs 802.xx 1. Only 3G has roaming, you keep your same IP on telco roaming partners. 2. Your IP can be routed back to your own network, so you can use Private IP space. (Think about this, 10 people with a 10.0.0.10 IPs on the same basesation, and they dont see each other. NO VPN needed.) 3. 3G has unbroken native encryption. (Wouldnt matter to me, I wrap my traffic in ssh, but Police use 3G now.)
One cool example.
There are some people using a combo 802.xx/3G setup in fleet vehicals. While your truck is parked at the company lot, it downloads the daily data nice and fast. (or uploads at end of the work day)
While the truck is making the rounds, it switches to 3G. Saves cost on 3G, with the large portion of data being transmitted locally via 802.xx.
Hey, people do click those ads, they do respond to spam. Look at Iwon.com, they are still in business and they pay people money to use their search engine!
I dont know why its so hard for you guys to create an account, and have your browser just autofill it each time you visit. I mean, if you use it daily, or at least weekly from a slashdot article, why not use a real account?
I mean come on, they let google index articles off news.google.com.
As mentioned elsewhere, you could hack it so that you could power it down remotely (powering it back up would be interesting if it's hidden in the insulation, though). Still, a metal detector would find it...
With all the internet storage sites (apple idrive/etc), maybe someone over at dataheaven needs to start a "Secure Online Data Backup" service outside the reach of the US courts. Then with a fast Internet connection you can store your data without the need of a local copy.
We already have secure, untracable email accounts overseas, maybe this could be an extension of that idea.
Really? So if you're gay in Alabama and want porn, you belong in jail? Or if you like oral sex in your porn and you live in Mississippi, you belong in jail? That's a pretty tough stance.
The law is neither just nor moral when it comes to a persons sexual lifestyles.. Its used as a tool to keep the status quo.
Wake up people, when sodomy laws reach the us supreme court because state courts call certain life styles "Illegal", there is a massive witch-hunt and you need to protect yourself.
This is just another tool, to protect you from prying eyes. Since the 4th amendment "Being secure with your own papers against unjust searches and seizures..." is no longer valid, you need to secure them yourself.
The future is encryption of data. Of course how long encryption of data will remain legal, is a upto the whims of our congress critters. Patriot Act 2 here we come.
The parent failed to point out that the real danger is when a system builder sells you a 2Ghz processor that's only rated for 1.6Ghz or something, and they overclocked it.
I didnt fail to point anything out. I was talking about the aftermarket sellers. They are not breaking the law for selling OC equipment or advertised OC'ed systems. The problem is the whole "Throw the baby out with the Bathwater" syndrome thats popular nowadays.
I build my own systems and OC it myself. The Real Danger is wintel blocking my efforts by either law or a hardware lock.
RTFA. Not the ethics of OC'ing in general i.e. your hardware by you, but the ethics of vendor OC'ing, i.e. your hardware by the sleazebag who's selling you a processor that is A) inviolation of the warranty B) likely to damage itself and c) therefore likely to wipe out your data with no recourse for you.
Same argument could be used about aftermarket car modifications, violation of warranty, could damage it self, blow up.
We don't need anyone protecting us, aftermarket OC products are "Use at your own risk", it's the consumers choice.
