    Exactly, as Futuremark put it.

    3DMark03 is designed as an un-optimized DirectX test and it provides performance comparisons accordingly.

    ATI/Nvidia optimized shaders, not cheating.
    Nvidia optimized for rendering in a benchmark, cheating.

    You can optimize, as long as you dont know beforehand what is going to be used in the Benchmark.

    Well, Futuremark was in trouble when Magazines ran ads for PC manufactures who used Futuremark scores.

    Now the last 2 months of PC ads are worthless if based on Futuremark scores.

    Well, after seeing the future mark scores, it looked to me as nvidia fx chips are blowing away ati and its gf4 line.

    But I found a really nice german benchmark site 3dcenter.org that had to be the best benchmarks ive ever seen, they actually use the games on each and lists the fps.

    Looks like the FX/GF4 5200/4200 4600/5600 (non ultra) are the same. And the ATI 9700PRO/9800 are faster than the 5800 Ultra.

    After reading these benchmarks, you can really tell nvidia tweaked the SHIT out its drivers for futuremark...

    On a PC, theres great howto's and utils to fix these problems. Even with grub/loadlin/lilo I can fix it on x86. On MAC HFS+ and the whole multi partition, boot sequence, bootroom, etc is a little confusing and no documentation is a deal breaker. This gentoo boot cd sounds perfect.

    I tried playing around with yellow dog, but sometimes it would mess with my boot sequence, and I couldnt boot into OSX native mode.

    This would be great, you dont have to touch the mac's boot sectors.

    While the book explains how to use the applications, tweak the interface, and fix common problems, it doesnt seem to dive under the hood of osx.

    I want to see books about the disk/file structures, program directories and resources, processes, configuration files, etc.

    You know how Windowmaker works, this is how AQUA Works.
    You know how BlahFS works, this is how HFS+ works. (And how UFS works under OSX)
    How the control panel controls the configuration files.
    Using LSOF to trace iTunes sockets/ports/file handlers.
    How to recreate boot sectors on HFS+ if you mess it up with loading YellowDog linux. (Openprom boot techniques.)

    A real OSX Hackers book.

    Actually, I had a GF3ti500, and U2K3 and BF1942 really started to drag on the FPS at 1024x768+ Res. And then if I turned on AA/AF it dropped to sub 20's. Time to upgrade.
    Picked up a ATI 9700Pro, and it has been about 9 months of great use for about another year before I need to upgrade.

    BTW, to see if your system is worth an upgrade, check out future marks online browser, you can search for a CPU near yours and then check to see if a faster video card will improve your FPS. Good reference.

    I have the DSS tivo, very nice as its all digital, no analog saving. Saw that the Replay was onsale at costco, and the slashdot article on copying files to your PC/MAC.

    Bought the replay, found out you had to buy a subscription, it wouldnt work without one. (and it was refurbished...)

    Hooked it up off the tivo, and the picture quality saving fromt the Tivo to the Replay was not that great. Could of been the Digital->Analog problem, but even my VCR recorded better. But I was able to move the files to the PC or MAC and edit them. But in the end, I didnt want to pay for the subscription, and he quality wasnt as good. Also, it didnt work with my normal DSS box. (the IR didnt control it) So I returned it.

    Even thou Tivo doesnt have an option to copy the movies off, the DSS models have a great picture, even better than the normal broadcast quality. Im thinking of getting the series 2 for DSS, could use more HD space also.

    BTW, i used the litttle secret code to enable 30 second skip, works great. Only problem tivo has, season pass manager is slow.

    Hey, while we are at it, lets put it on scanners at our stores, and we can detect if employees are leaving with more money than they came to work with.

    My linksys has an option to run an 802.11g network only. Dont see any reason to mix. Just worried that any new cards I buy wont support 56G as my current cards. Maybe I should go pick up a few before they get new roms.

    In addition, it simply takes too much sophistication for the VAST majority of email users to properly set up filters. A simple [ADV*] -> Trash filter would delete some email that quite honestly some users want...

    [ADV*] is actually a subset of Advertisement tags, there is no reason you couldn't have ADV extensions. [ADV ADULT] would be an easy one to filter on kid content. Maybe [ADV BUSINESS] for companies you are on a subscribed email list.

    And for users using Hotmail/Aol/yahoo/etc mail accounts, options could be included that are simple enough for the average person who doesn't know .procmail rules.

    Yes, no spam would be perfect, but don't expect congress to ban spam, only to pass some legislation with penalties to ban false headers, and include opt-out. That's not going to stop spam, just move spammers offshore where they will continue to spam, and bypass blacklists.

    Heres a solution that works, everyone likes, and your ISP can support, and online/offline mail clients can filter on natively.

    Actually, this is a Bad idea, this is why we have laws against people posting addresses for doctors at abortion clinics.

    While I hate spam, I think Ronald Scelson is on the right track. He wants to send spam with correct headers, make all spam use [ADV] and let the user filter spam. Seems a win/win solution. No need for black lists, just create a little client side filter [ADV*] -> Trash. Then the people who want discounts on software, or whatever can be part of the 1-2% that actually buy from spam.

    Of course, why Ronald Scelson isn't using [ADV] type tags already is a slap in the face. Spamers should team up and start everything they can to do things legit, before we start legislating them into the history books.

    Also on opt-out, You don't even need opt-out if you have [ADV] tags. Thou nice to have opt-out, the power to filter correctly is more important (imho)...

    This is really getting old, that any new method of transferring DATA has to killed by the RIAA/MPAA/etc...

    I started using bittorent for grabbing ISO's, when a new ISO comes out, I can get it within minutes now. This has to be one of the best uses, saves the hosting companies, and everyone wins. (And thanks to peeps on Slashdot for posting when new ISO's come out, mod them up..)

    Now this push channel comes out, (hopefully splits data, but I didn't read the specs yet.) so we can push new software out regular. This great! I can have patches, updates and even demos (or free mp3s) pushed to me (Legally!) (There is a service that does that over unused HDTV channels with a hardware receiver, but I cant remember the name of the service..)

    Hell, I downloaded the new Halflife2 movie from E2, 600 megs, I had to use fileplanet which is a pay service...

    These services are filling the need for speed and convenience.

    AS a parent with kids in public schools in Washington State, I can confirm that they are pushing the limits on what they can censor for children. Almost weekly I get handouts sent home with the children on what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior, dress, food, talk, music, holidays, etc. Its not just DARE, it's early as kindergarten and Pokemon...

    Hey! Where am I going?!? And what am I doing in this hand basket?

    Really, I cant tell if the java programming language is slow, Synchronization is really slow, Declaring classes or methods final makes them faster or Immutable objects are bad for performance.

    But I can tell you, the that almost every Administration application that runs java, sucks out my soul. Trying to run java applications over X at long distances makes me want to commit suicide. (Lucky theres VNC, so its almost usable...) (I think its a Shared memory problem with the way it works with X windows.)

    Then there is the damn JVM's that each app needs, and how i can have multiple versions loaded, so each application works correctly. Java 1.1/1.2/1.3/1.4 and now 1.5 should take even more disk space. Doesnt seem anything is upgradable in java.

    And lets not forget, about how Java likes to interact with all custom window manager replacements on windows. For some reason the screen flickers every time you run a java app. (Havnt seen any answers, but it messes with lightstep, blackbox, geoshell, and even stardock applications.)

    Humm, and cut/paste sucks, yes you can use key combos, but sometimes in windows, its nice to select all, and copy. (Minor bitch, but still annoying when you have switch ways of doing things...)

    If you cant have command line, and you must have a GUI, for gods sake use a HTML. I now make it a point to go with vendors without Java interfaces, they clearly dont use their own products on a day to day basis.

    BTW, i said java Interfaces, not Java Beans, etc. We have java running on solaris, works fine, other than the memory leaks. Its the Admin applications that use Java that are crap.

    Not just turn around, Block buster makes a killing on late fees. This will really hurt the Rental companies.

    BTW, sounds like this would work on Playstation/Xbox games too. How about getting the real game with a magazine that lasts 2 days. (I guess people wouldnt open the games till friday night.) And PC Games would also work.

    I love the "Bouncing around" the globe support.

    My favorite is when I first had to contact after hours support for a product, I was bounced to England, then Australia, then back to the USA. "Follow the Sun"

    Not one tech ever touched the product. 6 techs and 30 hours later, and finally some old, long haired engineer from the USA knows the problem and fixes it, 1 line of code in a database driver.

    BTW, only bad thing about Indian engineers, they dont like BBQ. ;)

    Ever had this happen to you?

    * On a project deadline, they feel your timeline to build the servers can be cut down from a 2 weeks to day, to make the project on time?

    * Engineering forces a product down your throat, best of the customer blah blah. And forget to include an admin interface? Places the server 150 miles away, and puts it in a DMZ so you cant remotely manage it.

    * Vendor builds a unix box, on the oldest version of an os known to man, and wont run any standard tools, and the only monitoring is a log file with "ERROR" in it.

    * Customer is down, on a new service that dropped form the sky into your lap... No support tools, no access, and your Manager is asking why you are taking so long. Dont even think of asking for documentation.

    * Your manager learns a new technology buzzword, and all the sudden, you have 10x more paperwork, and nothing has changed.

    * The software you run crashs all the time, causing outages. The vendor blames you, and points to internal documentation they wrote "last week".

    * Vendor A blames Vendor B for not following the SPEC, but your service is down, and neither will help you get it back in service.

    * You call Tech support in the middle of the night to find out your contract number isnt correct, doesnt matter you are the biggest customer and have super duper platnium support. Call back tomorrow.

    * In all staff meeting, managlement tells the staff about new work methods, which happen to just only affect you.

    * You ask a question to one manager, and 2 hours later, an All Employee email goes out about the same subject, that everyone should have already known!

    * You accept a new project, no training, no tools, no documentation, and its now production. Then they fire the Project Manager, Engineer and consultants the day after.

    * Marketing sells wizzbang new product, forgetting to see if its really possible.

    I tell you, the reason Dilbert and BOFH are so popular, its almost like real life....

    Reading the posts, I dont think everyone is understanding the point of the rail test.

    Using the rail test, Nvidia excluded almost all non-visible data. This shows nvidia tweaked its drivers to only render data seen on the rail test, which would only happen if you tweak your drivers for the benchmarks. (aka the cheat)

    I like it better if benchmarks uses average FPS on a game, and you go PLAY the game, and watch for yourself.

    Try 1024x768/1280x1240/1600x1200 with all AA/AF modes. Also stop using 3ghz P4's for the benchmarks, use a mix of 1ghz/2ghz/3ghz AMD/Intel boxes so we can know if the hardware is worth the upgrade.

    Actually, time-shifting would work, thou I would time shift days. The only time I really listen to the radio, is when I'm in the car. There are all kinds of shows I can never finish, or catch due to work.

    On the mornings, Howard Stern is on, 3 hours, about 1/2 is commericals. (Listen on the drive home!)

    On the weekends, the Kim Commando show, and some other computer talk shows on the weekend. Commerical skip, and time shifting it would be perfect.

    Thats the worst thing about the drive to/from work, it has the most commericals. I'd listen to mp3s, but a talk show is a nice alternative to music. Tom Leykis in the afternoons for Leykis 101...

    Only problem with ReplayTV is they make you buy mandatory subscriptions, it wont work as a digital VCR without one.

    What about a Home DVD Recorder? Also I read that you should play back the VHS tapes on the same VHS Player for best quality.
