Linux nerds don't want the popular commercial apps and games. They want the Gimp and nethack.
That's what they have, not necessarily what they want. I don't primarily like Linux because it's free or open source. Those are nice features, but I use it primarily because it's nicer to use than Windows or OSX. Lack of games is actually what kept me from using Linux full-time for years. I had to get a console in the end to be able to use it as my desktop OS without feeling like I was missing out somehow.
BTW I'm happy with the GIMP over Photoshop myself, but a result of more Linux desktop users would be more commercial apps - and of course, a result of more commercial apps would be more desktop users. I know a few people who like Photoshop because it's what they were taught in their art courses at college. It does sometimes have some nice features that GIMP doesn't, but GIMP will copy them in time.
Yeah, iMacs and iPods were made cool by nerds *facepalm*
If nerds had that much sway, the majority of people would be running Linux on the desktop, with all popular and important commercial apps and games available for it. And there would be no copyright or patents. And they'd be too busy with their girlfriends to use computers much of the time.
Did you RTFA? They were (apparently) working with the content providers. They were also making a load of ad money from it all. Do you honestly think that companies that do things like tax evasion and other scams via shell companies, shouldn't be held responsible for their actions? They were directly encouraging copyright infringement as their business model. It's right there in the DNS name. Kino = Cinema. If Google had called themselves "Child Porn, and other stuff", I doubt they'd have gotten very far.
Well, we should try to change insane laws. One of the quotes at the bottom of Slashdot recently mentioned that it's illegal to have your bathtub inside the house in one state (I think it was Virginia).
Of course most of us only pick and choose what parts of the law we want to obey, but the government should always act within the law IMO.
Commenting on the raids the German Federation Against Copyright Theft (GVU) claims that Kino.to made “significant revenue” through a “parasitic business model.” GVU states that Kino.to was working closely with the sites that hosted the copyrighted films, and that they profited from commercial partnerships with these companies.
I have no idea how true or how deep that goes, but it sounds like they were more involved in the process than simply letting people upload links.
It's definitely convenient if you want to be able to do this kind of thing very often, and for something that you just did say 10 minutes ago. But for example the Volume Shadow Copy functionality we have on our Windows file server just runs incremental snapshots every night, which doesn't get in anyone's way, and avoids the performance hit of writing everything twice every time you save (which admittedly won't be a big deal in most cases).
They seem to be doing fine with the iDevices and iTunes store. Mac sales are pretty much a "halo effect" from those things these days.
If Apple considers MS an enemy, I'd think it's in the same way that the Road Runner considers Wile E Coyote an enemy. He might have a lot of resources at his disposal, but he's a complete bungling idiot when it comes to actually executing any new plans. Zune and WP7 have completely failed to compete with iTunes and iOS..
You mean seeing that there is a check being done somewhere somehow means that it isn't "publicly available"? Where else would this app get its info if it wasn't from public records, or people reporting checks in? Both of which should be legal.
Snapshot takes minimal disk space compared to a backup
Use an incremental backup?
I'm not saying it wouldn't be a nice feature to have built into the OS, just that instead of hoping for such a feature in future, people can have similar functionality right now if they really want it.
Don't see why the file system would really make a difference for that.
You could also have a look at these new fangled "backup" thingies. Keep your user data in a separate partition for example, and you can backup/restore the system separately. You'd probably also want to backup/restore in that situation too ~/.* of course.
Actually I do remember a story about Apple developing a screen where the entire monitor worked as the camera. I've relegated the MBP to being a server now anyway, I'm sticking with more Linux friendly machines for now.
The title alone makes it look like an advertisement for Windows - colour me unsurprised:) If it had mentioned an OS that was already out then it would have been less of a clue.
Everything I've heard about Windows 8 so far make it sound like it's very touch-screen centric. I think they're missing the point completely if they're abandoning traditional desktop paradigms altogether. By all means make a version of Windows that is designed for tablets, but don't force that UI on everyone else. It'll end up being worse than Unity.
When I got my first Macbook I used to be pretty paranoid about this kind of thing. Moreso because I had Skype set up to receive calls from people, but I also thought stuff like this would be a possibility. I wonder if the little light next to the camera is hardwired to come on when the camera is in use, or whether it can be disabled in software..?
I'm happy with that prospect at the moment:P I have only had one girlfriend so far who was actually that histrionic about her weight though. I tend to go for the types who actually look after themselves, and are at least semi-rational. Admittedly that type of woman is pretty rare.

Pfft. Next you'll be trying to tell me I didn't need to catch and eat all those mice, and shit in kitty litter for a week when training our cat.

Okay. That's pretty damn cool :)

Damnit, I got the protocol all mixed up. Handshake first, procreation second..

but is not a billionaire
I think you just proved his point.

My copy of DNF was dispatched earlier today ;)

Damnit! I wasn't sure, so I just went for it. Best policy :p
My thoughts exactly, sane female. Do you happen to be available for a procreation simulation anytime soon?
Reiser strikes again?

Don't forget gutsy
Define "know".

Hundreds of builds probably.
