I don't feel weird running around as a female character, any more than I feel weird running around as a shotgun wielding cyborg, flying a spaceship or base jumping off the top of a skyscraper. Games are generally about playing a role which is very different to your own life.

I enjoyed Mirror's Edge and Heavenly Sword quite a lot. I always thought Tomb Raider was a bit shit, but that's nothing to do with the main character being female. Can't think of any other female protagonists right now, apart from in RPGs where you can choose your sex.

That is an excellent deal indeed. I decided to switch from dual CRT to a widescreen monitor a few years ago, and decided I'd be just as well getting a 40" HDTV rather than a separate PC monitor and TV. I haven't really used it much as a PC display since I switched to laptops and console gaming, but if I ever get another desktop machine or gaming laptop, it's going to be hooked right in there.

If you don't want to strain your eyes, shouldn't you be sitting a little closer? Sounds like you're twice as far from the screen as you should be if you want to be able to make useful use of the pixels you have. If you zoom everything to hell, you might as well be using a 640x480 monitor.

I am one of those nerds. I loved Macs and Amigas all through the late 80s and 90s (despite being a kid), and wanted them to overtake Windows. Now, Amiga are all but dead, and Apple is gaining strength, but it's nothing to do with the Mac.

They didn't stop making other games. Apart from Manhunt (and perhaps Bully, which I haven't played), they just like making very open, freeform games. Manhunt sucked, and I am not a big fan of Midnight Club compared to say Burnout Paradise (though I didn't give it much of a chance), but the other games are all great fun:

    Notable games published
    Grand Theft Auto series (1997–present)
    Midnight Club series (2000–present)
    Max Payne series (2001–present)
    Manhunt series (2003–2007)
    Red Dead series (2004-2010)
    Bully (2006)
    L.A. Noire (2011)

Red Dead Redemption has quite a different feel to it. It's very atmospheric, and obviously the setting is completely different, being rural instead of city based. I love it. I also love the GTA style as you say. GTA is like modern comedy gangster flicks like Lock Stock, RDR is like a western, and I'm presuming LA Noire will be like Noir films, obviously - though I plan on waiting until the price comes down a bit before getting it, and I have plenty of other things to play in the meantime.

I felt GTA IV was milking it somewhat, but from GTA 3 through to San Andreas, they were adding new gameplay concepts and expanding the capability of the game engine. GTA IV felt like a step backwards. It looked more realistic, but was less fun, in part due to people texting you all the time. I started feeling like it was a chore (because I wanted all the perks from keeping your friends happy, though I probably didn't really need them) and never finished it.

What? How are those things in any way opposed? Can Apple not copy two things at once? I thought their mobile developers could handle multitasking these days.

The app was out a year before this feature was included in iOS. To make matters even more insulting, they've copied the design of the icon this guy created for his own app. They're spitting in his face. Try RTFA instead of trying to pretend to yourself like Apple are always good guys.

    Gimme a break.

Macs have become popular because of iPods, iTunes, iPhones and iPads making Apple better known and "cool" - not because of OSX.

A very high percentage of people buy Macs and install Boot Camp/Windows on them. In other words, they have the Mac purely to look cool, not because it is technically better than Windows.

I still love the open world format more than linear games :)

You should try Saints Row 2 (I never actually played the original as I just assumed it was a cheap rip-off of GTA, but it seems I was wrong). It's a lot like the GTA 3 series, but with more variety in the mission types, plenty of humour, and 3 main plot lines. The co-op play is also good fun.

We had a Classic. I loved it (I was 6), and it's part of the reason Windows has always seemed so awful to me.

Apple were mostly going downhill until the iMac and iPod. My dad ended up getting me a Windows 98 machine. He developed some Mac software himself, but said that I should learn to develop for the most popular OS if I wanted to make the most money type thing.
