Which part exactly do you have a problem with? The generic soccer mom stereotype was perhaps a bit much, but the rest is all true. Those of us that have seen games improve since the 70s and 80s don't really appreciate the steps backwards that are being caused by those who suddenly have noticed that computer games can be fun. The thing is that most of these people suck at games though, and won't enjoy anything remotely complex. I saw an interview with a World of Goo creator who said that the comments pages of mobile versions of the game were filled with morons who ask incredibly dumb questions that never get asked by people using the PC and console versions. They even added a "skip level" button for those that can't be bothered to actually play the game.

    Brutal Legend.

Also, Scott Pilgrim vs The World was modelled after a very pixellated Double Dragon style 80s side-scrolling beat'em'up. Amazing 8 bit soundtrack by Anamanaguchi too. In today's world, you could call that innovative.

It's hardly like Angry Birds or Plant vs Zombies were innovative. The only difference is that they're on a touchscreen mobile device instead of being 00s flash games or 90s shareware.

The fact remains that the first one to break is going to make a killing, even if it's only for a year. And afterwards they'll probably still get lots of goodwill custom. I'd stick with such an ISP for a couple of years at least as a thankyou. It will happen eventually :)

Mobile phone plans here used to be pretty outrageous when I was a student, especially if you wanted a lot of texts or data on the plan - but now things are quite reasonable. Here in the UK there's plenty of competition of course. I know there isn't much competition for mobile telcos in the US, but there surely must be some competition in the ISP arena?

  7. Re:What's average Netflix datarate? on AT&T To Introduce Broadband Caps · · Score: 1

Any organisation that tries to impose such caps is going to see its profits dropping as people move to services that will actually allow them to continue to legally stream movies from YouTube, Netflix, download games on Steam, etc. Maybe then they'll get a clue.

This is the sort of reasoning you get from religious nuts and Apple fan boys. Over here we'd say "14th of March, 2011". If it were just down to that then you could go either way, but for writing purposes, it makes sense to have things in order of how regularly they change, ie DD-MM-YYYY, or YYYY-MM-DD (which is the ideal format, since sorting numerically also sorts by date..).

Not really, the server could stay powered up the whole time (unless you really get 0% usage at non-peak times, and those times are predictable, in which case it makes sense to just power down completely at those times). By scaling up I mean enabling more cores, thus improving the processing capacity of the server. Then you'd get the best of both worlds, with the server being fine for anything from small to massive workloads, while still using less power than the equivalent x86 setup. Like modern engines which can enable or disable cylinders at will to conserve fuel when not much power is needed.

A lot of servers are idling for most of the day, but you need them to be able to scale up quickly at certain peak times.

Like I said, I'm not going to rip the CDs again. All the music I've bought in the last year has been directly as MP3 downloads anyway, so I don't even have the option to re-rip there. Good thing it's already higher quality than the quality I'd decided I was happy with after running a few tests, eh? Any higher and the only people who will even pretend to be able to tell the difference need to get laid.

The difference is that my phone came out last summer, and only has a single core processor. It is indeed a mini tablet, but I really expected more of the iPad 2 since it is starting to see stiffer competition. I'm considering purchasing a Xoom myself, it would be a rather nice upgrade over the netbook.

It's ample because whoever wrote the summary has to keep trying to pretend to themselves that it's competitive to justify the purchase of their little fashion accessory. My phone has 512MB RAM.

I'd consider 1GB to be "ample" for a lightweight device right about now. My netbook is currently using 530MB RAM with only Chrome open, and usage when I have Chrome, a text editor, media player, IM and email clients open tends to be around 700-800MB.
