What's wrong with having a "pay store" as the app manager? It's better than having one place for paid apps, and one for free. All mobile devices use this method, and it works great. You can install the vast majority of your apps and libraries in one place, updates are all handled by one system rather than several.. it's one of the few things that they're actually doing right.
Why does it even matter what the package manager is, as long as it's still using.debs?
Scripts call native code when they run executables. Those executables could pass objects as JSON or XML or whatever if it were actually necessary to have objects. That's much better than a fixed platform solution. Arbitrary solutions appear all the time, and then the world drifts away from them towards actual interoperable, transparent, standards-based solutions.
Yeah, because C# objects are much better than plain text. I've used quite a few languages by now, but never C#. Partially because of people like you. Binary objects are obviously far more opaque than plain text when it comes to piping data between tools, and that is a negative thing for the reasons he just gave. It seems that you don't understand anything he just said.
A lot of it had to do with clean and efficient energy via warp drives too. Combine warp drives and replicators, and it just becomes a matter of acquiring the raw elements that you need to create food, etc.
We're probably going to have something similar on a smaller scale when 3D printers become more advanced.. people able to print out their own car parts cheaply at a local printer, etc.
Also Apple isn't the sort of company that buys other large companies - would never happen.
15 years ago Apple also wasn't the sort of company that would make MP3 players or phones. Plus, Jobs is dead, and everything can change over time. It would be a pretty positive thing for the world overall if Apple bought Windows. Apple have a lot of experience with switching architectures and OS compatibility layers, etc.. they could maybe turn Windows into the business version of their OS. Windows has kind of outlived its usefulness by now anyway. I eventually tried Windows 7 and quite liked it as a general purpose OS, but Windows 8 is just a mess.
I wouldn't go quite that far. MS pay astroturfers to post on Slashdot too, so it must be relevant to something. I haven't noticed any for a while, mind you.. but then again, I haven't been reading the comments as often recently.
It sounds like the software was working fine in those situations. Expecting a plane to land safely with faulty sensors seems to me like expecting a pilot to land safely after having his eyes torn out. Unless there were redundant systems that could have let the software know that the altimeter was full of shit?
Well, I'm not usually one to defend Microsoft, but let's play devil's advocate. If that department is profitable (doubtful right now), then that's a reason to keep it. Even if they're not profitable, MS forced themselves into the games console market, and eventually it started being profitable. I wouldn't say they have zero prospects in the phone business if they actually made a product that stood out as being good. Things can change very quickly in the gadget/tech world. I do kind of wish they'd just become irrelevant and disappear already, but at the same time, competition helps to stop things becoming stale.
I don't remember being corrected on this before.. (not saying that nobody has tried, but I don't remember it). Perhaps if you'd give some evidence that they are whales rather than just saying they are, I'd change my mental model of the cetacean family.
Despite their informal name, "killer whales" are actually dolphins (google it), so they're not "whales eating other whales". They would be "cetaceans eating other cetaceans" though. I don't think any other cetaceans try to eat whales, though there are other toothed whales that can eat other small sea creatures.
Then there are those of us that do understand, and have a moderate distrust in human ability to foresee everything, and to do adequate safety checks, etc.
Personally, I think nuclear power is A Good Thing. From what has happened so far in the world though, it looks like we need to implement more modern reactor designs to avoid any more radiation leaks from human negligence, or the occasional natural disaster.
I loved Saints Row 2 (didn't try the first as it sounded like a poor quality knock-off of GTA). It seemed like the spiritual successor to the GTA 3 games. They didn't take themselves nearly as seriously as GTA IV did. I've not played enough of V to know how it compares properly to the previous games (only done a couple of missions), but so far it definitely feels like a more enjoyable place to be than Liberty City in GTA IV.
You should play Vice City or San Andreas if you want to see why everyone loves GTA so much.
I agree that the original Deus Ex is awesome:)
GTA was traditionally not about being real, or living out crime fantasies - more about having fun doing silly things. IV felt like it took itself too seriously sometimes, but hopefully V is back to form.
Compared to what? GTA is one of the most free-form and detailed virtual worlds there is. It's filled with beauty, technical awesomeness and humour. Are you just not a fan of games in general? What did you think of Red Dead Redemption?
Holy fuck, you're stupid. Half-Life was complete crap with a lame story and horrible, generic gameplay.
I find it pretty ludicrous that you think Unreal had better story and gameplay than Half-Life. How so?
The Unreal multiplayer was quite fun, but the single player was one of the most boring and repetitive shooters I've ever played.

That's a shame. I don't even do any OS development, but I really like the UNIX way of doing things. Sounds like more developers need to read this

Try reading more than just the headline next time.
They're breaking Gnome, not Linux. The nice thing about Linux is that you can configure everything exactly how you want it. Maybe try MATE?
More relevant than Slashdot is about anything.

Seems like you didn't click the link.. :D

It would make far more sense than an intelligent being existing in a fully formed state from the outset.
"long term growth" is simply "short term growth" integrated over time
Have you ever thought about becoming CEO at a banking company? You'd make a good one.
What exactly is a "person like me"? I have a job and a house, and pay taxes on them.
That doesn't mean that I think we should squander all of our resources for short term growth.

I wish :p
GTA is shallow and boring.
Compared to what? GTA is one of the most free-form and detailed virtual worlds there is. It's filled with beauty, technical awesomeness and humour. Are you just not a fan of games in general? What did you think of Red Dead Redemption?
If you're only thinking of the short term (as in, say, the next 50 years), then yes, it is.
What is wrong with you people?
We're apparently not quite selfish enough for you?
What's wrong with her saying that?
It's always sensible to conserve your limited resources, while making more efficient use of your (effectively) unlimited resources.
