I didn't say they made it, I said they provided it. Services like YouTube are great for providing everyday users with a high availability, high bandwidth platform to reliably distribute their content to a large audience (regardless of the merits of said content).
Well, I've never had any issues with the software centre in Karmic or Jaunty, but it's true that I often use synaptic as well so that may be why I never ran into that particular issue.
I wouldn't object to a carbon monoxide detector in my phone.. it would be better than one of those little strips you leave near the boiler.
Does this always-on surveillance mean that the govenment can track your precise whereabouts whenever it wants?
This seems a little stupid.. simply having a phone and having it switched on surely means you can be tracked by the government already, if it really wanted to do so?
I just don't think those should be called "measurement errors", possibly something like "sampling error" or "sampling bias" due to the way things are done differently in different countries. There was another post around here saying that they do take these differences into account when doing international mortality rate studies, but I suppose that in some cases it may be impossible to create a cohesive set of data depending on the quality of logging that the source countries do.
Actually, you're the one twisting the stats, whether intentionall or not. If you'd said "less than 1% of all births" then what you said would still have been technically true, though it also is pretty meaningless given that all countries have less than a 1% infant mortality rate. Also how exactly does "measurement error" fit in here? Are people accidentally deciding babies are dead when in fact they're alive?
Yes indeed, they were separate before the tagging system ever existed AFAIK. As for the car analogy.. tagging each story with story is like writing "car" alongside the manufacturer's logo on every car you make;)
You can drag the address bar up next to the menu bar, that's what I used to do when I used FF.. makes sense on a widescreen monitor. The bookmarks toolbar is also pretty pointless when you have the bookmarks menu.. and at the very least there's probably a keyboard combination to toggle the bookmarks bar (ctrl-b on Chrome, probably the same for FF).
No, I think it's just the fact that there are many many more posts submitted as potential stories to the firehose or whatever it's called, and then the ones that are chosen for the frontpage are tagged as stories. Sorry to spoil your hypothesis.
The tag is useful in some cases, but not as a visible entity on the front page. It's about as pointless as tattooing your name on both sides of your face, just in case someone suddenly wonders if you're really you when you turn sideways.
It says what I've always thought: RPGs are easy and relatively boring. It's the social experience that makes them interesting though. Still doubt I'm ever going to play it, if I want to play an RPG I'll go play a MUD.
Well, I think in the end he means something more along the lines of "why is the story tag visible on the front page". I find it annoying too sometimes.
That's what I thought, but he's very.. enthusiastic(?) when it comes to morality. He says that he's never used or wanted the feature so he doesn't deserve a refund. He actually got annoyed at me for even asking Amazon for a refund too until I pointed out that I have used Other OS before. I do feel slightly guilty for doing this to Amazon as they have always been great for me, but I'm doing it to send a message to Sony.. and indeed because it's worth taking. If there's only a few people doing it it can't really hurt Amazon, but if there's a fuckload then they'll probably get some form of reimbursement against Sony, or at least could refuse to sell any more PS3s or something. Then maybe Sony will get the message and reinstate other OS.. though it seems more likely they'll just get pissed off and never include a similar feature in future PlayStations.
I've done it anyway as I think that a message needs to be sent to Sony. Trying to encourage my flatmate to do the same thing despite the fact that he's never used the Other OS feature.
Remains to be seen whether they'll refund me 20% too. If they do, it means I got a seriously good deal on my PS3:P
Of course! And don't forget that some of the hardware they were running on was probably produced in China. Now we can finally all be one big, happy family - yay!
Oh yep I use alt-tab anyway, though had forgotten about control tab (and for tabbed apps you can often use control or alt plus a number to switch tabs). I have super left/right bound to switch my desktops, and I do already have volume keys on my keyboard above the numpad, but no other generic media keys so I've bound my extra function keys (it's an Apple keyboard) to do some media control stuff.
Yeah.. I used to be very used to top left clicking for closing from Amiga Workbench and Mac OS.. took a while to adjust to using the other side.. good thing you can close most windows with control w and usually whole apps with ctrl-q anyway.. though I don't know the shortcuts to switch in and out of maximised window views in Ubuntu, but if you're doing those things you're likely going to be using the mouse for moving the window around anyway.
they could punish the annoying ones by stopping/slowing traffic from Google's own servers.
I think that would be seen as Bad by most legal systems.. and by most Google employees in fact.
I didn't say they made it, I said they provided it. Services like YouTube are great for providing everyday users with a high availability, high bandwidth platform to reliably distribute their content to a large audience (regardless of the merits of said content).
Indeed. The bit that really got me was:
Some European telecoms groups fear Google will reduce them to 'dumb pipes'
That is really all that they are, or at least should be. They are not content providers, they are merely facilitators.
Don't forget Sony.

When you say "most recent" do you mean the 10.04 beta? Hardly a fair test, if indeed there is any truth to your post at all..
Hey what's my phone doing.. blue screen, white letters.. "0xFACEFACD: USER_DEATH_IMMINENT wha?" *gasp*
You need a sarcasm detecting chip in your phone.
Plus the oblig Simpson's clip - I can't find it in English but you can still get the gist here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAReq4WMmqI
"Oh, a sarcasm detector *rolls eyes*, that's a REALLL useful invention"
That's actually surprisingly good for a song about farting.

A "+0.5, Tough Love" mod would have been handy here.

If its easy to solve, nobody interesting wants to play it
Fixed that for you..

No, but you are inobservant. It's called Minesweeper.
