  1. Re:Or... on Plants 'Recognize' Their Siblings · · Score: 1

Bit of a random aside, but I used to make bots for Counter-Strike (as in AI opponents, rather than hacks!), and it was funny to see people attribute behaviour to teh bots that I hadn't actually coded in there... of course it was called 'TEAMbot', and the intention was to get the bots to act as a team, but I remember at an early stage some people thought the bots were backing each other up even when I hadn't coded in any 'teamwork' stuff yet! People will anthropomorphicise anything! With regards to what you're saying above, I totally agree. I suppose you're being rhetorical, but I think we can quite clearly see 'fear' and 'anger' in other species, and even things like 'love'. I also have wondered about whether we see the same colours as other humans do, though I'm pretty sure that we would because of the way the spectrum mixes together smoothly, and we all have the same rod and cone arrangement in our eyes, as well as viewing the same spectrum (maybe some have slightly different weightings of RGB of course, and colourblind people have one of the colours missing, can't remember which). It is still feasible that we all see a different set of colours entirely though, it's just very difficult to imagine without being able to experience.. in the same way that our brain doesn't have the equipment to navigate using ultrasonic sensors (now that would be an interesting biology experiment! ;))

Err.. by definition, anthropomorphicising something is making it 'human'. So you don't need to anthropomorphicise humans since they are human. Just because you consider us to be animals doesn't make any difference.. it's like saying "should we felinicise [just made that word up, obviously] cats?". "Anthropomorphic: Having human form or attributes" (one of the definitions when I entered define:anthropomorphic into google)

You're right about the values when it comes to company car tax though! Probably would be more than that for a Hummer actually! My car is about £2500 a year in company car tax, and it's only a 1.9 litre turbo diesel (only 130HP, though has a fair bit of torque ;) ). I think my tax was about £130 a year for a 1.6 litre petrol, that was about 5 years ago though.

You are joking, right? Obesity is not a biological advantage, it is pretty much guaranteed to give you diabetes, and the only way to actually become obese, even if you have a disease, would be to take in more energy than you use. There maybe are some diseases that cause people to store energy even when it should be being used to power them, but for 99.99999% of cases, it will just be because people aren't exercising self control (I myself am realising that I should stop buying food just because I can :P I'm by no means fat, I'm 6'2" and 13 stone (82.5kg..182 pounds etc), but I know that it's possible for me to become obese if I just let myself eat. I haven't heard much of his stuff, but the stuff I have heard was pretty good. I didn't even know about the tricks until my bro-in-law told me about him playing with his teeth and showed me on YouTube, I agree that's pretty easy to do. The cool thing about Hendrix was that he was self taught, and I loved songs like 'Little Wing' before I even knew they were Hendrix songs (I heard the Corrs version lol). Of course there are good guitar players these days, some probably a lot better technically than Hendrix, but it's not all about technical skill either. Guitar players like Joe Satriani that play a zillion notes a second don't do much for me. Sure it's impressive, but it doesn't sound that amazing compared to something more composed with for example good use of silence as well as actual notes.

Likewise I haven't heard a lot of Dylan's stuff, though sometimes I've been surprised to learn that a song I like is actually a cover of one of his songs etc. Enjoyment of musicians just comes down to preference in the end. Hendrix did have some very cool songs, and the right attitude, even if he wasn't a great singer or anything it still fits in with the music :P
