southeastern Pennsylvania near philadelphia. enforcement in the chain stores is very solid and all employees are trained on carding. if your gamestop is not carding look at their Point of sale terminal next time you buy an m rated game (or R rated dvd) a prompt comes up to check for id.
Go into a gamestop or electronics boutique. I used to work there. They card everyone they believe under 17. If the person is under 17, product IS NOT SOLD. I have seen this policy enforced at every EB and Gamestop I have ever shopped at. Why do activist groups and the government continue to dwell on what is most assuredly a dead issue? Do you know who is buying the kids the games? The parents. Every time I would read off the M rated label they would go in the car and get their parents. I would explain to the parents what the game was, but they would never listen. "Everybody" has one so my Johnny MUST have one to fit in.
Microsoft (or any American company) investing overseas is not news. It's foolish to assume that there is such a thing as American protectionism, pride, etc anymore. Whether or not this is a good move will depend on how it effects future software. If we get better Microsoft software that's great they need the help. If not they wasted their money big deal. I'd love to say Microsoft is betraying it's American roots but quite frankly there's nothing left to betray.
I'm sorry as great as this would be for road planning, we have horrible, congested roads where I live, and other important and completely valid projects. I just have trust issues with the local, federal, and state governments. I don't want to put more of my rights within their immediate control. Whether or not they actually act on their newfound abilities doesn't really matter. What matters to me is that if I had a GPS in my car and they were actively tracking me there is the POTENTIAL for abuse. As I said, I don't want to give a group of governments I do not trust the tools they need to infringe upon my rights down the road.
I have been looking for good introductory material on security on various platforms, and I have had great difficulty. To make matters worse, I attend a small to medium sized university that does not have a definitive focus in computer science. It's so hard to discuss and encourage discussion in a topic that is simple not taught on a large scale level at the university. Sure, the class was offered once the entire time I attended. The problem with securing systems and security in general is the knowledge that both the general users and even technical individuals have about it.
Maybe a different flavor of geek but in the same vein. Didn't they try the whole three nacelle thing on star trek and it went totally wrong. I mean lets be serious 2 is so much better than three. everything from binary, to twins, to dual core processors. we should definitely make sure cores are either 1 or a multiple of two in the future.
Actually, I think this whole thing is an answer without a problem. there's not many things on the DESKTOP right now that benefit from this arrangement this whole multi-core thing is just the chip manufacture's way of hiding their thermal woes and the death of moore's law with marketing speak and marginal performance improvements
At this point the only people monitoring my University's network traffic are bored CS students. However, if that kind of deal came into effect I don't think the already cash strapped department could handle the added weight. Hell, half their staff or more at this point are student oncampus work-study jobs.
are you guys all insane? Have you been living in a cave. I was an employee of gamestop for 2 years and we were required to card everyone. Don't believe me? buy an M rated game and look at the point of sale terminal screen. OMFG it says "check for ID" wow. Why is this even an issue?
You know looking at that baidu search engine I feel like I'm looking at google. Oh wait, it probably is google that some technology leeching chinese firm stole from us. Or maybe some greedy american corporation just gave it away in exchange for more profit.
Here's my read. There's nothing extraordinary about china but its cheap labor and lax copyrights. There's nothing extraordinary about American corporation but a lack of loyalty to america and a propensity for overwhelming greed.
