I'll try not to make a habit of replying to my own posts, but I was talking about a multi-monitor setup whilst the GP was probably refering to virtual desktops.
Compiz's wallpaper plugin can put different wallpapers on different virtual desktops, but currently needs nautilus to not draw the background. However, this means that you won't have any icons on the desktop! All that need be done by GNOME developers (specifically nautilus/eel people) is add an alpha channel to the background wallpaper pixmap -- which they may one day do.
once, for the nautilus/eel version as used by ubuntu gutsy i think, there was a not-really-big patch for this(actually 2, for both packages). however in ubuntu hardy that one did not apply anymore..
I think it *might* have caused a graphical redraw glitch with the screen-outgraying for gksudo and co, but I wonder could there any other reason for not including this for over a year? I want my desktop icons back...
actually, there has been done a open source "super hero" comic already many years ago starring at least tux, the bsd daemon, a quite known character on/. and a gnu i think - T.U.X. Terminal Unit X. Unfortunately I can't find it anymore.
so again, microsoft copies from free software/open source;)

Ever heard of those "Anti Virus" that slow down your system by scanning everything you read or write, third-party "personal/desktop firewalls", and other spyware/malware cleaners? Products like "Norton 360" ?
I'm no SSL expert, though, so I may be missing something here. Yes. You need the private part of the server certificate to be able to decrypt the transferred data - in other words: your own certificate.
performing complex tasks such as viewing large images, or updating large spreadsheets, instead of the whole operating system locking down for several seconds, it now just locks down the application I am working on, allowing me to Alt-Tab to another application and work on that. I am thrilled that Microsoft decided to add preemptive multitasking to their operating system,
wait.. this became even worse in vista? I mean, yes, in wixp you can actually alt+tab to another app most times more or less, but explorer.exe(the taskbar) sure isnt preemptive multitasking capable, it just locks up e.g. when compiling so you cant switch window by using it.
Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista.
What exactly does that mean, is this only the client for the Non-Windows-and-old-Windows-Client-Lockout-feature of Windows Server 2008?
How can it be well received in Vista if Server 2008 is not yet out, and who well-received it? Or is there more to this feature?
I can just see it - famous news anchor on TV talking about major manufacturers trying to cut costs and corners by making new-fangled commercial airliners out of mud! It will be the talk of the nation!
It will be the uprise of Elbonia as a global economically powerful nation!
I guess it's a feature to the bad guys. To everyone else, it's a bug. I guess it's a bug to Microsoft and the content industries. To everyone else, it's a feature.
I made a simple cronjob some time ago that gathers items from various feeds and puts them into a mysql database. I can access this database from multiple applications (ircbot, website).
prior art?
I suggest getting a L1 Shield instead(you can get one in the dark world shield shop or in the village of outcasts), at 50 rupees its just 3 rupees more, but in addition to getting a hard surface for your mouse enjoyments you can also quickly grab your mousepad to deflect arrows in case of an enemy attack.
in CSS3 there is the box-sizing property, if you set it to border-box you get the behaviour you want.
gecko has supported this for a while as -moz-box-sizing.
don't know about other browsers.
and microsoft is a combination of both?
they have the low quality of profit driven software as well as egoistic recreation/bastardization of standards just to be as incompatible as possible with the rest of the world.

you could use the ie infobar for that: http://px.no-ip.com/proj/ieinfobar/ (see the _readme.txt or if you have IE available the html page for a demo)
