I'm looking for a Perl book that already has a bunch of good scripts for log analysis and shopping carts etc... and basically shows you how to implement them.

Why? Just start with Learning Perl. If you really want some scripts in dead-tree format, get the Perl Cookbook. For fully functional scripts like the one you mention, get them online, like at CGI Resources.

I find it ironic that, even though the DC area supposedly has the largest density of wired individuals, that there seems to be such a low literacy rate in the same area.

The reason is that the 60% wired refers to the DC metropolitan area, which includes many affluent suburbs in Maryland and Virginia. If they limited it to DC city limits (like the literacy statistics), the number would be far lower.

Unlimited TLDs eliminates squatting by making it infinitely expensive to register all combinations of algoresucks.*

This doesn't fix squatting. It simply shifts the period. There would still be legal battles over popular TLDs, like *.sucks

Now, how hard would it be to implement and manage infinite TLDs? Not that hard.

This would be harder than you think. The root name servers are not designed to be very dynamic. Also, lots of apps (and firmware) have fixed ideas of what the TLDs are. I guess this would give all the Y2K programmers something to work on next year :)

I wish I had NT experience before I hit the job market. Unix only turns kids into hopeless geeks.

I think you got this backwards. Hopeless geeks turn to OS's that are technically superior. Therefore they turn to Unix.

NT makes them productive, employed members of society.

Computer experience of any type will make you employed these days. Good people can be productive on any platform.

I strongly believe it doesn't matter what OS is being used by kids up through the high school age. These students are at least 5-10 years from the job market, and of course the entire computing landscape will be completely different. What does matter is teaching the fundamentals. Rather than learning how to do accomplish tasks a certain way with a certain GUI, they should learn logical constructs. Lego Mindstorms, for example, is probably one of the more effective teaching tools there are for younger folks.
