1. Buy a Mac! and be a little bit paranoid about security. 2. Use Linux and be paranoid about security. 3. Buy a tinfoil hat. 4. Build a beowulf cluster of Linux enabled devices: an iPod, two toasters, one 'smart' fridge, and one spoon -anything runs Linux these days-. 5. Build your own OS!
Or you can keep on using Windows and trusting AV companies and its flawed model of "ok, we'll release the fix AFTER enough people have been screwed".
I don't think that the design of Windows, where changing an int to a float in the library that displays Clippy can crash MSN Messenger, would allow for easy fixes, regardless of closed or open source code.
You can actively defend your system anyway. It takes time and money (e.g. self-made hardware firewall with parts bought from the tinfoil-hat store, if you want to be/. grade paranoid), but is doable.
You are right, but most empires do not like to quietly go down in flames. On the other hand...
I do not think that freedom of speech is necessary for economic growth. Sometimes it might work the other way around. Having a strong leadership with no space for dissent guarantees that if the leader knows the way no time will be lost discussing. Look at Slashdot, many times the discussion is so out of focus that no usable conclusion is ever reached. A group is trying to troll, another to be funny, etc. I know that the./ is not supposed to be going anywhere, and that it's purpose is just informing nerds (TWICE) about stuff that matters, but having freedom of speech does not solve many problems.
Please, don't jump to the conclusion that I want oppressive governments or dictators. All I'm saying is that China can be (IS) the next economic superpower without the civil liberties or political models of the West. Most people don't know what real freedom is, nor do they care if they have enough 'freedom' to have fun and live a 'no worries' life.
I sometimes think that 'freedom' is way over rated by people like us, who believe in some World way beyond the Rainbow where all software is GNU-like and MS does not exist.
... they do correctly predict: - launch date of MS Vista; - launch date of Ballmer's furniture; - which 'feature/bug' will be dropped from the Vista release.

For./ readers someone has to come up with: 1. The trolling game!! The son-of-a-gun with worst Karma wins a RIP: -1, Troll tombstone! 2. The 'find-the-duplicated-story' memory game!! 3. The First-post shootout!!
Yet Another Email Client?
With wizards!! And a SUPERB interface!!
Good for them if they learned about project management, coding in Java, or whatever. But I have yet to see why should I even give it a try.
Well, sometimes Apple is no better than some of the assholes that run/runed the company. For the sake of the people that live in the RDF: I'm not talking of Steve Jobs -many mistakes but good overall-.
Yes, some of this guys are control freaks, DRM-lovers, RIAA-bitches, that are no different than MS/SCO/SUN troops.
What IS different is the organizational culture of Apple and other companies. I believe it is better than Microsoft's, Sun's and, definitely, SCO's. That I like, and because of it Apple is capable of making great products not only because they want big profits but for the sake of doing things right.
Sometimes it seems that they are forced to do "Good Things", or that their intentions are not 'pure', like some interactions with the OS community. But look at their DRM strategy compared to M$. They looked at things from the user's perspective and tried to change the views of the RIAA to match the 'reality' of us. I don't think this was only motivated by profit but because Apple 'thinks different' than M$.
As for the case at hand: I don't think Apple should be suing those websites. They should plug their leaks.
This is not what I meant. You can analyse the different tradeoffs that the french model has concerning their economy. So 'stiff' labor laws may 'create' high unemployment rates, on that the US may have an advantage under some circumstances. On the other hand France has an advantage on 'free' time for their workers.
You can compare them item by item, on different scenarios. I was saying that you can not categorically say that such a big economy is totally flawed or that the US system is 'just better'. Not even concerning labor laws, it's not clear cut which is the way to go when looking for your population's well being.
For me I would rather work or own a business in Europe than in the US. YMMV.
Or to safeguard the top management body bonuses? =D
To the guys complaining of the 'red' french... well, you should study their economic and political model. It is different, it has drawbacks, it has advantages. It is not perfect, just as the US' system is not perfect either.
Do slashdot readers see Sun being relevant 10 years from now? Will they survive by selling 'mostly' software? I know they sell hardware, but they no longer control the full stack like IBM with POWER.
Just a question.

For those that want to have a mental breakdown.
Meesa thinks the Republic needs DRM and the 101st Airborne DRM-cloned-lawyers Division!!
And the DoD could order Vista Death Star Edition, with a screen-saver that updates the costs of current war operations.

No. MS cannot/will not outsmart Google. MS will not even outsmart the succesful MS of the past.
