  1. Re:The Y7.6B Problem ...? on Astronomers Say Dying Sun Will Engulf Earth · · Score: 1

It really is an academic endeavor. Homo Sapiens constructed the first organized civilizations about 10,000 years ago. As a species we have reached our pinnacle. We will be lucky to be in a civilized state in 100 years. Technology will prevail to destroy us before it redeems itself in our society. In 1000 years the Earth will start over again with a new evolved species by exterminating the now inferior human race. The cycle will constantly restart itself many times until we evolve enough to flee this planet long before the sun destroys it. At our current pace, we will destroy it long before the sun has a chance to.

  2. McCain shouldn't be a Republican candidate on Best Presidential Candidate, Republicans · · Score: 1

He is the most liberal Republican in memory. The only conservative value he has is for the war effort. He will never get the conservative vote. Being a nominee will split the party and destroy it. He should run as a Independent. I won't vote for him as a Republican.

  3. Re:Wait a minute... on Dual-Core Shoot Out - Intel vs. AMD · · Score: 1

It depends how efficiently the power is used. Intel engineers created this huge pipeline in the P4 that ultimately makes the processor less efficient. Both the Pentium M and the AMD64 processors have smarter, more efficient designs with shorter pipelines which ultimately use less power. Intel knew the P4 was dog when they released it, but went ahead anyway because of pressure from AMD offerings. Also, redesigning and running another simulation on a new model would be very expensive and would mean a big delay which would sacrifice market share. Kudos to Intels marketing for successfully ramming the P4 down our throats.

  4. You must consider Pentium M and power consumption on Which CPU Is Tops in Price/Performance? · · Score: 3, Informative

As previous stated, you must consider total cost of ownership. Pentium M desktops are not common yet but if you check the benchmark sites, you will see that the 2.1GHz Pentium M out performs the P4 running at 3.0GHz. And at 1/3 the power consumption. Intel Engineers knew the P4 was a dog when they ran the first simulation, but upper management didn't want to wait 2 months and spend millions to rework the core, so they used marketing to push the product and their marketing department should all get raises, because it worked. They used the lame excuse to techies that the pipeline is designed to work better at higher speeds, so the clock speed race had begun. When the PM are available I'm scrapping my P4, getting more perfomance, lower electric bills, lower medical bills (later in life from EMI)and leaving the dog behind. As for AMD, I am a big fan of the underdog with the superior product, AMD64, but it still is a little too pricey and sucks a lot of power also. It would be my fallback if the Pentium M does not make it to market soon. The Notebook manufactures want all of the PM production and are fighting to keep it. We will see.

I have thought about this many times and wondered how is that college grad or even that high school kid going to get to a a useful level in this industry and who and how fast will we be able to innovate in this increasing complex world. I have been completely emersed in computers since 1985 and have been able to reach the point where I can understand everything at a pretty indepth level that goes on inside a computer. Partly because I was involved in many of the evolving technologies since before they were standards like VGA, PCI and USB. I can honestly say that I know a little bit about a lot of different things. I am not just hardware centric either. I program in C++ and know Linux and Windows inside and out and have a stack of certificates for hardware and software technologies I have "LEARNED". I listen to the 20-30 year old techies and they sound like unschooled children. There is so much they don't understand that it's sad to think we are going to leave it to them. Even guys my own age are one dimensional, they know or two things really well, but fall of the end of the Earth if you talk about something else. That brings me to my next point. There are so many computer literate countries now that the tech pool is much bigger and documentation is quite good (not like the 80-90's). The hard working types will learn the history and develop the future. Yes, there is a lot of stupidty out there, but there are the good ones that will take the ball and run with it.

First of all, we wouldn't launch just one missile at a time and it's ignorance to think so. The Peacekeeper name was picked because it was to keep the peace through deterence. Nobody would dare to attack the US with these missiles in place, thus keeping the peace. As for terrorism, it's been used for hundreds of years, primarily by fundamental extermist. Today, it is used overwhemingly by Muslim extremist. We just stirred up the Iraqi hornets nest and now it's a mess that has to be dealt with.
