The keyword here is 'well-designed'. A well designed application is easy to transition between one platform and another, especially in the web development sector. For example a division ov front end and back end code, with the front end consisting ov html and ajax could easily be transitioned from using a back end written in cold fusion to a php solution.
And after you translate your code into php, you can easily transfer it from the windows server that used to be running cold fusion and mssql to a lamp platform in a few days.
I am currently porting my php code (the same code that was formerly cold fusion) to lua - it involves slightly adjusting the syntax, removing brackets, and renaming the file extensions from.php to.lua. The front end has remained exactly the same, as it relies on xmlhttprequest and mostly static template files that contain single line output variables that are replaced with content.
Any language can result in a mess if used improperly. The solution is to use well defined conventions or a standard framework like Fusebox, and document every process. This requires well trained programmers, who cost more to hire then 'a guy sitting in his basement'.
"One of the best programmers I ever hired had only a High School degree; he's produced a lot of great software, has his own news group, and made enough in stock options to buy his own nightclub."
This is how open source software is better for *programmers*
1) find company that needs a software solution
2) adapt existing or create new open source code to fill this role
3) release code as open source
4) ???
5) profit
Client is happy because they got their solution for less cost then developing from scratch, you are happy because using an oss codebase offset development costs that would otherwise be incurred if you had to write everything from scratch.
Open source software development is faster, cheaper, software development.
oh, and there are no unknowns. step 4 is thus: establish a community around your project for peer review, because teh only thing better then getting payed to write software is getting payed to have other people write it for you.
I was under the impression that the F-22 was a pork project; a waste ov taxpayers money on a obsolete aircraft has cost more than twice as much as anticipated and has little to no chance ov producing a working weapon system.
Stick the F-22 in the failed projects bin along with the A-12 and the RAH-66. And while you are there, take the V-22 with you.
The smart thing to do would be to put the funding into the JSF - but then Boeing would not get piece ov the action, and the lobbyists would never allow that to happen.
I think you are all missing a point - the 360 was not ment to compete with the ps3 - it was ment to compete with the ps2. In 2 years, MS will unviel the xbox 3 and have a 2 year head start on the ps4.
I agree with you about the dreamcast. and considering the similarities between the dreamcast and teh 360, I think the 360 is about to get raped by sony.

It is funny you mentioned Rythmn and Hues because they funded the development ov Film Gimp, and utilize a huge number ov Linux desktops.
Oh, I know about the smaller companies. The production company I work at is pretty much macs for the artists, linux for teh programmers like myself, and windows for sales and c-types. Only a few artists who do compositing using autodesk's stuff run linux.
Off topic, but I bet there is a correlation between the size ov a shop, the willingness to pirate software, and linux usage.
Linux has made strong inroads?! I hereby crown you de-facto king ov understatements! There is really only one choice when you are making big farms.
Yeah, photoshop is used on desktops. but only because photoshop finally caught up to the film gimp. If you wanted to do HDR before cs2 you only had one choice, and it was not adobie. and once you have something that works, why change?
>the RIAA has nothing to do with the TV shows which you unilaterally declare crappy.
ORLY? American Idol winners sign contracts to only record with companies owned by the show's producers and to allow related agencies to manage their careers. Former co-host Brian Dunkleman referred to the show as "owning" the winning contestants. Needless to say companies that are affiliated with the RIAA.
Or better yet, if you want to use a computer from 10 years ago, install the latest linux distro, turn all the eye candy on, and laugh at all the stupid windows lusers who had to upgrade their computers to run a glorified text editor.

>It would only work if we ... use prison labor ... US companies take advantage of the low cost labor.
They already do. Some states employ inmates in for-profit call centers. Others in factories. Some inmates only get paid 12 an cents hour.

I say let them burn. I just want to pull the plug.
What would you expect from a piece about how IT workers from the pov ov management, except a power point presentation? An excel spreadsheet?

So the man asks for a nice, clean, easy to use GUI and you tell him to use some cli tools. Where is the disconnect?

if microsoft is winning, then why are they selling less consoles?
You are forgetting that microsoft has a monopoly on evil.
Sony tried to be evil, but microsoft sued them for patent infringement.

being locked in. they like it when they get to lock YOU in.
Kinda like in quake wars - spawnraping the other team is fun. but its not so much fun when you are getting spawnraped.
In other words... In Soviet Russia, big content vendor locks YOU!
HD-DVD lost because it contains proprietary Microsoft technology. Big content don't like vendor lock in.
It took me longer then 4 hours to get vista past the "Windows is configuring updates" dialog box.

lol.
Eight years ov proven success is not 'inroads'. Every major studio uses CinePaint, and every major studio uses Linux.
Adobe CS4 is going to be a collection ov eclipse plugins.
>Come on Epic, where's your UT3 Linux client...
Cowering in fear ov being spawnraped by Splash Damage's Quake Wars Linux client.
Hollywood? CinePaint? Your opinion is the only thing totally worthless here.
