Haha no not unusual. They are just faced with working with pre-net tech that kept all the terminals running, spliced together with thinnet, data running through 110block phone ports, voip, digital phone, analog phone, and dual oc3 lines...it's a very interesting mix of tech. I enjoy sitting back on slow afternoons while many of the older retired persons stop in, catch up on the latest goings on with the campus tech, talk of the past,..etc.

  4. biometrics on a usb stick? on Authentication Tokens for Password-less Access? · · Score: 1

I like the idea of having a usb mem stick and having a biometrics thumb print scan such as the one on the newer IBM laptops. You can keep all of your passwords on there but the trick would be that only your 'the owners' thumb scan would turn on the stick. This would make it more secure then a tradional door key as some people have pointed out, an obvious flaw.. and also another thing that could be done would be dock it when you get home, all pwds would be synced (in case of loss/damage/explosion!) then just purchase a new biometrics usb, set the thumbprint, upload info from the doc and you are ready to party again. Let me know if there is something like this out right now and I would luv to purchase it.

It's also interesting to note that this idea also applies to the infastructure that keeps all of these mainframes/servers running. I am working in a state collge system in NY as a student worker. Since state colleges don't have as much financial backing as some of the private colleges, the infastructure isn't kept up-to-date as much. At times it can def. be a challenge to keep both the old and the new network technology playing nice together.

I appreciate working in this system though because I have gotten to work with a great bunch of people that have been around even before the Internet. I have worked with many different types of network hardware that I otherwise wouldn't have had the chance to. As technology has been progressing I have watched my older co-workers go though many many training sessions on new technologies... many that I already know... but I guess it's also a type of training session for my learing how to keep thinnet kicking ;)

  7. It's up to the parents on Rating Game Content Here and Abroad · · Score: 1

Yeah I have also worked in retail and have witnessed lots of interaction between parents and children. I have said to co-workers so many times, and them to me as well, "my kids will not act/behave like that and I will have 1000 times more control over them then that parent does right now". I understand that with more parents working and not being around the kids it's harder to raise them but making the most of the time that they do have together and giving them bounds is key. These parents that let their kids run around like little hellions in the stores and would sooner give into a purchase such as GTA then have them be upset for a little while are also the first ones that get in a big uproar when controversy arises around a title. "Well I can't believe that thats in this game thats just crazy!!!!" Yeah well the rating system is there to help you with proper choices for games for your kids! Not having my own kids yet, I am sure it's easier to say that the blame is to be placed on the parents of kids playing these games and not the developers. But I do believe that developers make certain games geared for certain gamers, and with the help of rating systems they try to get the games into the hands of that audience. Lets face it, most parents don't read reviews on a game before they purchase. It is the responsiblility for parents to regulate what their kids play, just as in TV viewing.

  8. Re:Arrghhh on World of Warcraft Interview "Responses" · · Score: 1

Wow that was just a whole lot of fluff and not alot of peanut butter. I guess it's good that someone responded but it was pretty weak of Blizzard to pass it off to a PR person. Being a huge fan of the game I would really have liked to read what a developer's responses were. I am sure that they, the developers, would have liked to respond also, probably being fans of slashdot as well I am sure that they are contemplating an extra once over with the toothbrush tonight after all that sweetness like the rest of the crowd here.
