How can ADSL cost more than DSL?????

  3. Re:why bother with Linux? on Basic Linux Systems for the Home User? · · Score: 1

Not everyone needs to be a computer-geek, just like you don't have to be a greasemonkey to own a car. I have a car so I can DRIVE, not because I like the concept of a motor, or enjoy getting dirty and grimey tweaking it.

I have taught older people how to use computers. Some of them need a few days just to get comfortable with the concept of using a mouse correctly. Plus you need to be concerned about their eyesight and coordination. Ever hear of arthritis?

My 63 yearold mother is a newbie, and has NO interest whatever, in HOW the machine works. She just likes the things she can do with it. If at somepoint she does get interested in how it works, then we'll deal with that, but the idea that the first thing you do, is explain how to install linux to someone who could not tell the difference between a memory DIM and a harddrive is frankly, stupid.

If they're at the level of saying something like
    >"oh no, what'd I do? I must have broken
    > it!"
then I seriously doubt the first idea that will pop into their head, is "humm, lets boot off a floppy, run fdisk to see what the partitions are, and reinstall! Dang it, where in 'tarnation' did I put that blasted Debian CD!?!"

Just make sure you kill gpm before you start X. You could make a wrapper script that greps gpm's pid and kill it (maybe gpm keeps a pidfile??) and kill it, then launch X. You can always restart it after you exit X.

I am offended that you use the term cracker to refer to a person who illegally breaks into computer systems. Everyone knows that the term cracker refers to white southerners.

  7. Re:ppp in v3 on Running Linux, 3rd Edition · · Score: 1

I don't understand why ppp seems to be so complex. Unless you're still trying to get that crapmodem to grow the extra circuitry needed to be real modem. Gee, sorry that someone hasn't worked for free to write you a free book-length tutorial about ppp or any other subject you don't fully understand. As with microsoft you are "free" to spend all the money you want on classes and CBTs. Linux is harder, but worth it. Freedom is not Free.

And of course lets have a silent moment of prayer for all of the poor book companies that went broke trying to sell Microsoft related Books. I mean, Windoze is just so dangedly simple you don't ever need to buy one of them paperly things all covered with writting and diagrams. Go to a bookstore and they're not to be found, cause there plainly isn't a market for them!

  8. Doesn't have to on Congressman Advocates Breaking-Up a Guilty MS · · Score: 1

If MS-Applications and MS-OS are different companies with SEPERATE bottom lines, and SEPERATE Boards, (Make Gates choose one company and sell his stock in the other) MS-Applications will see that if they follow in lock-step with the goals of MS-OS, it will damage the value of their Stock. No one will lose money like that just to be nice to Bill Gates.

Don't forget about spinning off MS-Networks and MS-TelephoneCompanies. I do not want Microsoft being able to dictate that I need a Microsoft phone to make calls, need a Microsoft OS to have a cable modem or an DSL. Microsoft is expanding into new areas that it can dominate due to its OS related power right now. Imagine what they'd be doing if the justice department wasn't prosecuting them!
