  1. Dilema? on Ethical Obligations · · Score: -1

Only lame scumbags who don't care about their customers have this dilema. To normal human beings there would be no dilema, they would simply tell their customers the details of what happened, so the customers can take steps to protect themselves.

However people who don't give a fuck about their customers, probably have shitty security anyway and would be more worried about their own reputation/bottom line than their customers financial lives.

Frankly any one pondering this question is scum, die scum die!

The problem is most of these marketing douchebags don't understand the difference between running a linux webserver, file server, etc and linking an application with a GPL'd library or modifying a GPL program.

They try to implicate that just using linux anywhere in your company will force you to give everything you have away.

"What, mr. linux l33t haxor, you want copies all the documents I wrote in abiword, because abiword is GPL'd? Oh gosh, Evil Chairman Stallmann will have me banished to the gulag if I do not post my all my documents on the web, geez, guess you don't get anything for free afterall!"

Then it sounds like they have what is known as an unsustainable business model. Fuck them. I was going to sign up for their subscription deal, because I would like to play some of the games I have for windows, but forget it.

These guys seems too much like Microsoft wannabee's. I'd prefer to keep my windows partition to boot into for games (devil you know sort of thing). At least I've already paid my microsoft tax, so I won't have to spend extra for my games.

I salute wine for disassociating themselves from transgaming.

Besides, take a look at a lot of these source-forge projects. Many of them are the 99999th irq client, the 99999th attempt at a terminal emulator, the 9999th attempt to embed mozilla's gecko inside a small, clean interface, etc. These projects are often run by a single beginner programmer, re-implementing a commonplace application.

The internet and sourceforge makes these guys much more visible, but I don't think they should be counted when trying to describe how free software and open source projects work.

I don't mean to denigrate these guys or anything, but what (relative) newbies do should not be confused with what apache, Debian, linux kernel, or *BSD do.

Or maybe an interesting paper would be "Why some free software and open source projects fail" Something like that could help developers from making mistakes that damage the success of their work.
