All of the outgassing and sublimation of the CO2 Cap over and entire Martian Summer (200-300 sols) does effect the atmospheric pressure of the planet.. but only increases it by 1-2 mb. Earth has an atmo. press of ~1013mb.. Mars ~8mb.
Did the Kids walk around taping 'X' on there controllers to kill the cops? The number of young people playing Doom/Quake/Duke/Kill Zone/GTA/Carmaggedon or whatever is so high, you can not equate that to police officers dying. Sure the kids are nuts, but Video Games didn't make them do it. I can not think of one person I know (myself included) who has even threatened/hurt somebody else in a manner similar to any video game, and we've been playing the most horrific and deadly and immoral games we could find for over 25 years!
Now, Take those video games away from kids, and you'll have a real problem of wacko's!
All planets (like our own) which have a dynamic liquid core have magnetic fields. The strength of the field depends on how large and dynamic the molten core of the planet remains. When planets form, they start as a liquid lava rock, and slowly cool over millions of years. As they cool, the outer crust (or mantle) solidifies, while the core remains molten. This is true of any solid planet (not gas giant) therefore any rock-type planet would most likely of had a magnetic field at one time. Mars unfortunately is far enough from the sun that it has cooled to great depth inside the planet, reducing its liquid core to a very small percent of its original size, reducing and almost eliminating its magnetic field, which is at present very weak. Another proof of this is the lack of volcanism on Mars, which by examining the topographic features was once very active.
Doesn't Any other Geeks Here Watch Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel?!?!
They Busted this myth in season 2. The even built a boat out of wood, tar, and cloth as they did in the old days to try and make it catch fire. An I would imagine they could re-produce the mirrors and test much better then some one hundreds of years ago?
Do you go to a Buffet (loved the buffet comment actually) and pile a plate so high you wouldn't be able to finish it all in one sitting? Or do you put enough on that you could finish nicely, and go back for seconds in the future? Its not a race to get to space, and they could definetly use those resources in other areas. Whether it be human/natural/financial. China only has 'Economic Zones' which are profitable, outside those zones its completely different. And those areas are all near the coast in accordance with trade opportunities. What about everyone living in Western/Northern China?
The Science Of Course! Space exploration shouldn't be a 'noble' cause. It should be used to benefit mankind, and increase our knowledge of ourselves and our place in the universe. Going to space because 'we can' is not the reason we should be there.
Good Comment, However I would say that the US Space example is not similar, only because the US puts so little of its Monies into its Space Program. Now if they took the money Bush has spent on War in the last 8 years, Thats a different matter. Remember, states population approx 350 mill? China's population is about 1.4 Bil? And Over half of them (larger then all the US combined) live in dire situations. Personally, I love space, but going there for prestige? Come on.
I am all for Space Exploration, but a country like China needs to focus its money on feeding and clothing its population first. Millions are homeless and have no chance at a better life. People need to straighten out their priorities.
NASA's funding has always been low.. Just because they have spent 250$ Billion up to this point does not mean it was a large waste of money. It took them several decades to rack up a tab like that. How long did it take the newest Bush Administration? Couple years? The only reason people (republicans) complain about it, is because they would rather of had that money for either war, oil exploration, or their pocketbook.
If NASA had even 25% the funding of the American Military, we would already been living on, and exploring the surface of Mars.
US Doctors did tons of studies back in the 60's on the effects of THC (active ingredient) on the human body, and found that it did nothing more then make people laugh and fall asleep.
However, there is no denying the negative effects of smoking ANY product, cigarettes, pot, crack, etc., it all destroys your insides.
Just to clarify.. These asteroids are travelling through space at over 20,000 mph.. just as Tempel was earlier this year.. We did not 'crash' into it, it crashed into us. NASA just calculated where the satellites needed to be in order for them to be struck in its path. The only way NASA/ESA is going to succeed here is to either to fire an object going faster then the asteroid at it, or have one with enough mass to alter its course.
At the moment, we cannot get a signigicantly Massive satellite going fast enough to do anything more then what you would feel if a bee hit your hand while it was out the window driving down the highway. Sure it might sting for a moment, but it wont do jack.

Equal in size to the One in the Northern Hemisphere eh? Sounds like some one has Telescope Envy!
Great, So when humans are all dead and long gone, Aliens will land on Earth and know to the trillionth of the second what time it is on Earth.
