Why not Ubuntu? Zealot attitudes destroy trust. Earlier today someone flamed a Linux release for the self- righteous feeling it gave him. Such a person must NEVER be given any real responsibility.
(By the way, I *do* use Ubuntu and I do *not* use Oracle.)
One *very* large company I left some years ago was required to escort everyone out, including myself, even though I left on terrific terms. My friend and colleague wisely told me "Think of it as an Honor Guard." It helped me feel better.
As a regular employee I have worked up to 21 hour days and 105+ hours per week. I have had my badge access removed by my manager in order to get me to rest over a holiday. Of course, I was gungho and did it to myself.
Contracting definately keeps my hours in line because overtime must be approved.:-)

The most effective way to deal with office politics is to leave. You cannot change people. How much less an organization composed of many people?
