I agree.
I can see very few reasons why anyone would think this move is a positive one in the short to medium term from MySQL's perspective. At best, it would be a neutral one.
I do like MySQL and do hope that this move would in the long term be netralized and maybe even turned around to be an advantage, but can't see that hapenning any time soon.
That being said.. Long live MySQL:D
Remember that every change involving risk, has the other side of it as well.. opportunity.
"The movie depends quite a bit on the overall backstory from the one season of the television show. If you haven't seen the show, it doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense."
Oh.. and you think the first season of the TV series did make a lot of sense?;) Cowboys in space, with rifles? when there are spaceships? and camels in the spaceports, when there are hovercrafts?;) It IS an amusing view of the future though:)
I think by now enough people explained why concerns exits.
However, I might suggest thinking about this..
Assuming Oracle bought InnoDB only to bury it (and I still wonder about how much money they paid for it..), they would have to be clear about it with the company they bought, and its people.
So, the question is, if that is so - why would the people in the company accept such a deal? is the money SO attractive? Also, how would Oracle manage to ensure that people in the company won't leave to continue developing the code as part of a new company or as part of MySQL AB? Non-competition probably won't hold since the GPL makes it quite ineffective.
So I estimate that the deal is a bit different..
Oracle do intent to heavily use the brains behind InnoDB. They intent to employ them and make them a part of Oracle. Maybe use some of their ideas. But in any way, make them an integral part of Oracle. Certainly not just but them to burn them. These tactics work much better with a trade-secret properties or copyrighted ones.
Just my 2 cents
Indeed.
It's a sad day when a "musician" says that he/she "studied" "oops I did it again" and found its harmonies to be "complex":S
Its a song that takes about 15 seconds to pick up with the guitar (and another 10 to realize 1/2 of it is an editing of Hotel California):)

VoIP Going Wireless

VOIP is nice and wireless could be handy;)
However, what I don't understand is... "VOIP over wireless IP".. shouldn't IP be IP? wireless or not? and VOIP over wireless should be non-issue since it is designed to work over IP network, and the focus should be to make wireless IP networks good enough to be able to carry VOIP?
I mean, the original article here is about VOIP going wireless.. but VOIP doesn't need to go nowhere.. its already VOIP and working over wireless IP network should not be an isssue here.
Some people are affraid that of others listenning to them;)
MySQL is changing to the better I think. Is it a real database? Real enough for busy./, isn't it?
As someone who used MySQL since 3.*, I can't say I didn't have problems with it, but I did have problems with Oracle as well in the past. MySQL is a good product, whether anyone cares calling it a "real" database or not.
I wonder if the past 7 years were the good 7 years or the bad seven.
Anyway.. happy birthday google:) wonder if in 7 years, google will buy the world's tollroads;)
Indeed competition is good. I agree with that part. Maybe the new MSN adcenter will force google to make AdWords and Adsense into a more descent product?
Not so much with your statement that google does old products better.
The latest products they released including blogsearch, google-talk and even gmail are certainly not what I call good.
I agree. :D
