Watch the First 9 Minutes of Serenity

An anonymous reader writes "As reported on FireflyFans.net, Universal is attempting further promotion of the sci-fi action film Serenity by making the first 9 minutes of the movie available online. The clip contains the opening backstory that sets an Alliance assassin on the trail of the ship's crew; it's an effective hook. On Yahoo movies, Serenity is ranked as the number 1 film currently in theaters and is hanging in a top-ten spot in the highest rated movies of all time. Slashdot has previously covered Orson Scott Card's review, the film's opening, an interview with Joss Whedon, and much more. It's all out of love..."

What an interesting thing to say. I remember that Strange Days had a rather kick-ass web site for its time... and that was in 1995. Since then, I've lost count of the number of well-executed Internet ad campaigns I've seen for films. I know that many Slashdotters may have only been on the Internet for a few years so this sort of thing may be new to them, but it's an old, old medium to lots of us.

Either way, ad campaigns are put together by studios, not the MPAA. The MPAA is a trade group that represents studios.

But I did initially picture this on a galactic scale...

I suppose it makes things a little better that these planets have many moons, all of which are terraformed and include artificial gravity (I know, hard to imagine - and all conveniently have the landscape of southern California). But there are laws of physics (maybe math, actually) about how close together planetary orbits may come in a stable solar system. There just can't be many orbits in the habitable zone. (Anything outside of the bands of Venus and Mars would not look like California no matter how good the terraforming is.) So why aren't the outer planets cold?

You're right, many other details are thought out, but Whedon is delinquent on giving us a map of the settled planets, or even a sketch. I imagine he wants to, but can't make it fit with the requirements of the narrative. What the narrative requires is something analogous to an archipelago on the sea - a space that is densely populated with many moons and planets. That's just not gonna happen; the more you say about it, the sillier it would sound, so Whedon just ingnores the subject. If I were him, I'd have been more direct about it up front, bit the bullet on superluminal travel, and made Serenity an interstellar ship. This would explain the huge interstellar migration you mention... The downside is that Serenity seems too crappy to be superluminal... but then again, the Millennium Falcon was also a piece of crap and nobody had problems picturing hyperdrive. But there is something weird about people who can afford an interstellar spaceship but still use revolvers to shoot each other. Yes, a quirk of the show.

It's possible, I guess. If you look at the figures on discovered extrasolar planets, they of course are all superJovian monsters. SuperJovians may have Earth/Venus-sized moons by the dozens, waiting for someone to come and terraform.

Let's see, use nuke plants to power gas generators that process raw materials of the planet's surface and atmosphere to release oxygen and nitrogen; add carbon dioxide or methane for a greenhouse gas; get some genetically engineered bacteria to jump start a CO2/O2 cycle; oops, don't forget water, lots of it; get some genetech plants and animals on the ground to start a bioshpere; and earthworms. Earthworms are key for turning the soil.

On an icy moon, methane, water ice, frozen CO2 and nitrogen are available by the megaton lot. On worlds more rocky and possessing fewer available volatile elements, crash land some frozen comets composed mostly of the elements needed to start a biosphere. The impact alone would melt a few million tons of gases to get things going.

Okay, we've got a new solar system with Terra-size moons around SuperJovian planets, moons big enough to be called planets if they could orbit the central sun without getting captured by the gas giants. This works. And you don't even have to be in the habitable zone of the solar system to get enough warmth to survive -- the greenhouse effect can be adjusted so that the atmosphere retains far more heat than would be possible on Earth, because of the issues with ice caps disappearing and the ecosystem going blooey. The trick would be dicey, and expensive. Those would be the outer worlds, the worlds where the poor and the down-and-out would migrate to from the core, easy-to-maintain core worlds.

In a solar system scaled to superJovian orbits, the distances betweeen worlds could range from a half billion to ten billion or more miles as the space crow flies. Our solar system would be a blip there, a midget.

Okay, that down, I'd have to say that Whedon has never said that there weren't interstellar craft. The Core may well have a few, and that would be another tale, ripe for the telling. Maybe the star hops are done with antimatter photon rockets -- and antimatter would be pretty damned expensive to make. Antimatter rockets could accelerate for the standard year at one gee until speed is c minus a hair, do the flipover, and decelerate at one gee for another year. Due to the famous relativistic effect, the closer you push your speed to c, the more time "slows down" for the ship relative to the frame in which it travels. So four light-years or four hundred, it's pretty much always a two year jaunt, with the majority of the trip spent in hyperslowed time. The "galaxy" that Joss speaks of may well be experiencing the arrival of thousands of starships launched from the Core planets, tho the subject may not be a daily concern to the poor outbackers of the solar system in which the Serentity's crew cruises.

The world of Serentity may be far more complex and fun that we know yet.

To do it in the outer solar system, where an Earth would normally freeze solid, you adjust the insulation, as it were, by maintaining higher proportions of greenhouse gases relative to the remainer of atmospheric gases than would be safe in the inner solar system. Crank up the greenhouse effect, and keep toasty. High CO2 levels could be maintained by either terraforming machinery, or by keeping plantlife down (hence the desert conditions on the outworld planets! Aha!) to a precise miniumum to keep O2 levels proportionately lower realtive to greenhouse gases than normal here on Earth.

Now, the levels would be adjusted over time. When the moon/planet is first being defrosted, you'd have to raise the temperature a lot. Fusion plants fueled by deuterium or tritium culled from water ice would blast away for decades, just gererating huge amounts of heat -- giant plasma torches -- to get the whole setup's temperature down to a point a man could stand outside in a pressure suit without freezing solid in a frozen methane bath. After temps come down to a habitable range, pump methane and CO2 into the atmosphere in huge amounts, and let the greenhouse effect from trapped solar energy add heat to the mix. Adjust the fusion-powered torches to adapt to the increase in heat retention caused by the atmosphere, until the day they aren't needed anymore.

After your stable CO2 atmo is warm enough, you start adding plants and bacteria to start a photosythesis cycle. Water would come from melted ices as the atmo warms up. Add animals, earthworms, selected insects, seeds, stir and simmer. Then dump your wretched refuse from the Core planets to populate the place, at your set wages. Wait for revolt, shoot, then simmer again...

Oh yeah, light levels. Actually, even if the solar radiation were only one hundredth as intense as it is here in Earth's orbit, to human eyes it would look much the same. A room with a ten thousand watt bulb would blind you, even if the sun at noonday would be a thousand times more intense. It is unclear at what point terraforming technology was perfected, but it seems consistent with his series that it was considerably after they moved to the new solar system.

Despite your claim, I don't see any confusion on Whedon's part about the difference between a solar system and a group of stars with solar systems. His narrative is consistent throughout. I have some gripes with the way that he's laid his solar system out (for instance, IMHO the outer worlds should be CONSIDERABLY colder than the inner worlds, although some of that can be handled with a suitably chosen mix of gases for the atmosphere), but his description is at least consistent.

As to why you never see people making interstellar hops, the obvious reason is that, in general, they don't. Anymore than the average American keeps an ocean liner in his backyard so that he can take a trip to China if he needs to. They moved to the new solar system, and that's where they live now. Interstellar colonization at sublight speeds is not a fun or quick thing to do, and makes for poor movies.

The basic misunderstanding here is that you are used to science fiction which uses technobabble like "warp drives" and "hyperspace" to make faster-than-light interstellar hops in less than a human lifetime, but Whedon is restricting himself primarily to the actual known laws of physics, which suggest that such things aren't possible. (Also note that in his film, ships at a distance don't make noises in empty space, which is accurate but unfortunately quite uncommon in science fiction films).

Also, keep in mind that the crew of the Firefly is POOR. They don't get the neato toys. They can't afford laser pistols, etc. Those are for those with money, such as people that live on the Core worlds.

It appears that you are the one that needs to be straightened out. Interstellar travel is not shown because traveling outside the solar system would effectively cut off that ship from the rest of civilization for many, many years. In a relatively dense solar system, these kinds of delays are avoidable.

Firefly is actually one of the MOST realistic shows because it does not conviently introduce the extremely implausible/impossible concept of FLT travel without time dialation. Warp drive, hyperspace, worm holes and jump gates are fairly unscientific plot devices almost always used without considering the theoretical consequences (such as the fact that you CANNOT posses FLT travel without also possesing time travel. This is blatantly obvious to anyone with a basic understanding of Special and General Relativity. No, you can't get around this via wormholes or some such nonsense. If wormholes warp spacetime enough to allow you to effectly travel faster than light, then they also warp it enough to allow you to go back in time.)

The solution to your problem is rather straightforward: the original settlers of the solar system came here on interstellar ships. They either used some form of hibernation, lived their lives normally (with perhaps many generations living and dying on the spacecraft, if the distance was very great), or they traveled at high Relativistic speeds, completing the journey in mere hours/days/months (from THEIR point of view--in the rest of the universe, hundreds or thousands or millions of years might have passed.) The reason why you don't see any ships using this same interstellar tech is because it would mean cutting themselves off from the rest of civilization (and cutting themselves out of the main storyline in the process.)

Btw, there's nothing to indicate that the colony ships carried hundreds of millions of people. I don't believe that Joss has given any indication as to how much time has passed--for all we know, only a few hundred colonists made it to the new solar system.

I'm one of those who completely missed the "Firefly" series...
    (working too hard, i guess)
but I saw the movie "Serenity" last week, and liked it.
    a lot.

On Saturday, I decided to purchase the "Firefly" box-set.
and now I've seen the first 4 episodes of that.
I'm really enjoying this. It is well made and engaging.
This is the first time I have ever purchased a box-set like this.

I disagree with those who say the movie doesn't work unless you've
first seen the show. I found the movie quite easy to follow.
In fact, it might even be better to watch the series *after* seeing
    Serenity.

As for the gripe about the word "galaxy" - I just look at that as
a slang term for their star system. Why not call it a galaxy?
That is quite in character with the show's tounge-in-cheek dialog.
