I expect a term to remain unchanged. Did I grow up in poverty? No cell phone, no AC, only basic cable. Must have! It's crazy to compare what we now call poverty to what was just 30 years ago. Or 40 years or more. The idea of basic necessities has been so bastardized that people feel you can't raise a child without disposable diapers. So strange that my Mom raised 9 kids with cloth diapers. So strange.

Such as? More government spending? More bailouts? The largest spending spree in the history of this country with bipartisan support wasn't enough? Its still a republican issue? Lets ignore policies that have historically improved the economy and stick to policies that have shown weakness and created both a sense of helplessness and entitlement. Lets not create a system where an individual can thrive but instead lets only allow those who are politically linked to manipulate and control us. You think higher taxes on the rich will change things? More taxes. Why not. That must be the problem. Hell if we all just relied on the government to provide everything (Spending) and accepted what our job chip told us we could do it would be much better. We can all just work for the government. That system has proven so successful through the years. Why should things be fair? Why shouldn't we have an entitled subclass that feels the wealthiest should pay 70% of what they make? Heck it even makes sense to then send out to that voting populace a check at the end of the year instead of having them be invested at all in an accountable government. Why encourage investment? Lets stop that! Never mind that almost all of us have our retirements tied to investments. It's all going so well lets push for more of the same! More spending! More regulation! More ways to cripple each and everyone of us! That is OK we are losing our good credit rating and before long we can all strike in the streets like Greece about our government check not being enough and the US Dollar not being worth a cent. Hurray!

Books are all fine and good for reference but if he wants to learn he really should try to find something simple and go from there. The language isn't as important early on as being able to try things quickly and getting feedback / good explanation of errors. Heck in elementary school I was copying Apple II code from magazines just to try to get some silly demo / game to work at school. Without any floppys it all went away when the power was turned off. Pretty much an exercise in typeing but it led to me trying to understand the logic and eventually to an understanding of compilers and binary executable files vs interpreted scripts. Just get a basic interpreter and help him learn some branching and prints to the screen. My sons have spent an immense amount of time playing with switches in Minecraft to do silly things like create clocks or open remote doors or whatever. It makes me laugh to see it because in my mind they are learning to program without knowing it. Legos Mindstorms come with logic / programming modules. Might be a fun and interesting way to include robotics into his learning.

Good programmers program. Doesn't matter where or how just because it is fun is usually enough. Work on understanding logic and execution flow through different systems and the languages will be easier to learn.

One other thought find challenges or projects on the web. Having a goal or a problem to solve usually motivates a lot more than "learning". I know osix has some coding challenges that are fun and may be very educational. They are language agnostic and can be done with any language you are comfortable with. Very fun all together. -Beans

  13. Go buy an Indie Game! on New SimCity To Require Constant Internet Connection · · Score: 1

I remember when all games were indie games. I remember when Doom was shareware and id found a market. I remember an unknown company shipping Half Life Day One with a bunch of hardware just to get noticed. Thing is this market still exists. Anyone on Steam knows the huge library of indie games that get released every day. They sell for a fraction of the cost of a huge publisher game. They are of differing quality as with all indie markets. The thing is a game like Torchlight I played every bit as much as Diablo or Diablo II. They sold it for 20.00 brand new. They have announced Torchlight II as bigger in every way with multiplayer and no drm for 20.00. Yet all i hear about is Diablo III. Kind of pisses me off. Anyway rockpapershotgun is a great site. Steam store is an awesome place to find indie games. Humble bundle is a great way to get a drm free copy of games for under 10.00. Just stop buying the drm ladden EA / Blizzard / UBISoft crap. Problem solved. Play something else. The Indie devs are infinitely more grateful and will give you a lot more for your dollar.

And best but not last put the entire cost of the fund on the pay check so employees know how much it costs for them to be employed. Wouldn't that be a great program?
