First off, NIN has had far more than one hit. Head Like a Hole, Closer, Hurt, Starf*ckers, Only, The Hand that Feeds, My Violent Heart. 2ndly, like Cash's version of NIN's Hurt is only b/c of a touching music video. Cash's voice, nor his guitar even begin to capture the emotion in Trent's version.
The Fragile is a musical masterpiece, both from an instrumental perspective and from a production one. Small niche of fans? Doubt it. I'm sorry, when did Kiss come out with a concept album? DownloadSpiral in this regard (a story from beginning to end about drug addiction) was geniusly executed. The single brought Trent his fame, no dobut. But this album is a must have. It's up there with Pink Floyd's the Wall. Year Zero, while no where near as musically complex and focused more on simple drum loops, still was more brilliant than anything KISS has ever done.
If you can't tell the difference between a bunch of pretty boys in face paint singing sing-songs, and one man who for the most part plays most of the instruments in the studio, has written not one, but two concept albums, then i pity you.
As to Trent sounding the same. Exactly what does anything off Pretty Hate Machine sound like anything on Broken? Where does anything off Year Zero sound like anything off Downward Spiral?

This reply just isn't to you. It's to many in this threaded discussion. Yes i was stupid for using company machines. That i know. I knew it then. I still don't have proof of them knowing this way. I don't know one way or the other. But you have to consider, i was one man handling an irc chatroom, revamping a website that blew up far faster than expected, maintaining a blog, i have a romantic life that's important to me, chores to do, errands to run. I used up every second of every day, and losing sleep answering the 1000s of e-mails and attempting to contact many people who may help the cause. It was stupid, but there simply wasn't enough time in the day. I'm not saying i didn't have a choice, i did. I made a bad one.
As for those that'll accuse me of advertising and attempting to get attention. Find me one advertisement on that site. That site cost me money and i didn't advertise a damned thing.
As to my job versus what I enjoy software wise, lets get real here. This is the real world. I'm not 30. I don't write for the linux kernel. I'm not management. I'm also not a kid. I have real world bills, i live in an area where finding a job in open source is next to impossible and i go where the money goes. If i happen across a position that aligns with my passions (which i actively strive for) then all the better. But until then there's rent and car payment and electric bills, and insurance, and gas and pets to feed and a relationship i value. I put things in perspective and i'm not such a strong idealist that i'm going to destroy me life. I'm not a member of PETA and i have a bit of common sense in this regard.
I disagree. While i prefer and primarily use Koffice and OpenOffice, MS Office wins in terms of user interface, usability, and functionality across the board. It is a superb office suite that wins hands down. Even the biggest linux and FOSS fanboy has to admit it's absolute awesomeness.
Sure if an open standard was accepted broadly, ms office sales would drop. But that's because not everyone needs a $150-500 office suite. Most people could get by just fine, with little or no problems with alternative office suites.
But MS would still be dominant purely out of quality of software, at least in this regard.
This could be an awesomely smart idea and all the power to all parties involved making it work.
I really like open source software, but i could really care less in the big picture.
There's more to stand for in open formats than software. The illusion of openeess that OpenXML is needs to go away. I hope MS office continues to grow and improve but their strong hold on document formats need to go.
There's many great movies without explosions. In fact most of the action packed movies with no dialogue except one line meat heads, sci-fi that's nothing but action with lasers, romance that's nothing more than repetition of Wedding Crasher, Meet the Fockers, and some crap with J Lo in it over and over again, all the CGI laden movies, with huge acting names in them.. tend to be really flat movies. They have no feeling, no passion, crap stories, crap dialogoue.
But ooh ooh.. look! Explosions! zomg. that's so cool.
Amazing movies were made on shoestring budgets. And not just cult classics. 12 Angry Men anyone? To Kill a Mocking Bird? These didn't exactly cost a fortune.Actors are overpaid, and Hollywood is too scared to try ideas that aren't sure things.
Sure we could have another 20 movies with Will Farrell or Ben Stiller in them, but I could really give a crap. Rodriguez and Tarintino could've made Grindhouse out of their pockets, and look how many actors and producers chipped in because they wanted to do something fun.
Movies need to get back to people who love to make them rather than these scientologiest nutbags who marry women doped up on too many prescribed pills while pregnant and not knowing who the daddy is.

bashing the name. Most of the time i agree. I, myself, support things like the Green AND Libertarian parties over the Republocrats. I love Defective by Design, much like how i have much respect for the Green and Libertarian parties in the US, the Pirate Party in Sweden, and quite a many groups that may or may not be political parties. There's lots of great advocate groups out there fighting for noble causes.. for smaller government, tech rights, privacy rights, IP law, workers rights, environmental rights, you name it.
But most of all of these groups suffer a similar fault and that's one of presentation. Very rarely do they show us that they're professional, they're websites look like crap, they're protests are childish, their statements to the public.. while i might agree with, can get a bit ridiculous at times. Groups like these people who can do something about it.. simply will never take seriously. I'm suprised Defective by Design has done what it has. But frankly if Richard Stallman wants to be taken seriously his needs to quit being a sappy bitch, cut his hair, trim his facial hair and learn how to dress and address professionals, government leaders, and the public.
None of these groups that i adore so very much stands a chance in hell, until they can present themselves in a manner the rest of the world will take serious. Generation after generation, people simply don't seem to grasp this concept... and it's a trivial fact of life that makes a huge fucking difference that none of us are going to change. And until people wake up and quit prancing around in obnoxious outfits outside of corporate and government offices, they will be written off as nutbags, hippies, drug addicts, radicals, etc..
Now all of this being said.. The language has already been firmly planted about pirates and piracy. It's engrained into the entertainment and technological culture as it stands. This word isn't going away. I sit and i watch as the word "liberal" has become a dirty dirty word.. and watch the Democrats and Greens try to re-identify themselves as "progressive".. and it's not really working. This country is leaning towards Dems, not b/c this nation is liberal..but b/c they're tired of Republicans. and then i used it. I am really not a "Web 2.0" person. I have photobucket and flickr accounts, have a de.licio.us acct i never use. I do have an abandonned blogger site and i have a site on wordpress. So i use the stuff, i'm just not a fanatic and not a fan of buzzwords.
I will say this though, i used it in alpha. I used it in linux (Ubuntu 6.06, Fedora Core 5) and i used it on XP. And after applying all the same tweaks in about:config that i do to Firefox, it ran faster than Firefox. I got a good many of my favorite extensions to work (though not all, and hence why i'm back to FF as it is now).
The only thing i did learn to love though, is that not a single firefox skin actually feels natural at all. Flock is slick as hell and without being an eyesore. The blog publishing was very useful, i didn't like the bookmarking at all, but the photouploading was nice too. And frankly, no extensions really pulled off what flock has, at the quality that flock has.
So i really don't get the complaints, i found it useful, i found it faster than firefox. I just value all my FF extensions more than speed, otherwise i'd be using Opera. But what Flock did, it did very well and i intend to check out the beta.
I sure hope you wrote your senators and representative when they were handing out government subsidy to these companies.
And i sure hope you support my right to tell phone and cable companies to come get their property (lines, poles, whathaveyou) off my property that i bought and paid for.
And i sure hope you understand where the technology was invented to begin with and how that research was funded (by the tax payer),

Every online content provider, every online retailer, every financial institution with online services, every insurance company running online apps for quoting (business's run off these websites, most insurance companies did away with software applications), every open source project that barely has the funds to function anyway, every independent blogger, even the big media..from fox to the bbc, every activist group is effected by this..from the KKK to the NRA to the Green Party to the Socialist Party, from PETA to the Christian Coaltion, from GLAAD and the Rainbow Coalition, the NAACP, the ACLU, the Libertarian Party, every charity organization that has set up online donations, every file trading service, every university, every public and private school in the US, every government department offering interactivity via the internet, every online application from Google spreadsheet, to Windows One Care, from Flickr to You Tube,
this is a loss to EVERYONE. Every individual, every corporation. Every political group, every religious group that reaches out online, this is the begining of the end for individuals to have voice through blogs and websites.

The "3rd" party stuff such as Easy Ubuntu and/or Automatix isn't b/c there's something wrong with the installation.
It's a legal issue, not a technical one. The codecs, fonts and such can technically be included very easily. Unfortunately these are closed formats that are owned by others (as are alot of drivers). A free distro can't afford to include them.
Nice to note that this is an ex-MS employee. But the person doesn't debunk a single claim, just throws out some "uncertainties" to muddy the arguement.
And it's not just foriegn governments i'd worry about. I don't want MS or whoever having access to government records and information without anyone else's knowledge. Now it'd be product suicide if they did so, but it's still a risk i wouldn't want to take.
The government, IMO, should use FOSS (or at least OSS) whenever they can unless a proprietary solution is the only solution IMO. Wasting tax dollars (200 per OS? 150 or more on an office suite?) so some overpaid secretary is some obscure department can send e-mails and print fax cover sheets all day is a waste that would be better spent on other tasks (or better yet, in the people's pockets).

Alot of OSS distro's in the early days were not easy at all and the concern for capturing the general desktop market wasn't as popular of an idea as it is now.
I mean hell. If all distro's wanted to make it easy to install an OS for the lamen,
