Now that they have this it's inevitable that productivity will begin to sink and before you know it there's nothing to do but read/. and surf for porn... Might as well start planning for its decommissioning, the place will be useless in a year.
It will be tested heavily this month, and could give astronauts direct Internet access within a year.
Seems to me that that type of functionality could have been added to the OS/2 versions. Was it really necessary to completely replace the OS to get that type of functionality? I know that IBM gave up on supporting OS/2 but couldn't an experienced programmer do this without IBM's help?
Well what is the criteria for drunk in public? I never heard of anyone getting a breathalyzer for something like that. A DUI where I live now is BAC >.08. At even BAC.1 there is no visible indication that I am severely intoxicated. I don't generally stumble or even slur my words. But I still won't drive even after a single beer.
Unless there is some part of the law that I'm unaware of I'm pretty certain you have to be quite hammered to be considered publicly intoxicated. You can get a DUI for having a mild buzz.
Bus service works fine in milder climates, but it gets damned hot and damned cold here and nobody's going to want to wait half an hour...
If you have to wait a half an hour then it's not "fine" bus service. I lived in Toronto for about 10 years and it gets pretty bad in the winter but between stops or stations on every corner and the bus and subway systems being so regular mass transit was actually a joy compared to struggling in traffic. I'd say the only exception was being out on a late night bender after the subway closed and the buses* slowed down. But then again I never got a DUI waiting for a late night bus and if I had the money to burn the taxis are everywhere and available 24/7.
Mass transit is not so bad as long is it is done right...
If you bought a computer with Windows on it and you don't feel like dicking around with drivers then don't install Linux. Or another version of Windows. Or turn it into a hackintosh. When I bought my last three computers I looked into what they were and made sure they run with Linux. Just like if I wanted OS X I'd by a Mac and not bother screwing around with trying to pirate (arrr!) it onto a regular PC.
It's not that hard to pick what you need to work with what you want. And I don't care what OS your talking about, installing it yourself without the right starting point is a huge PITA. I think Linux does remarkably well actually compared to the BS that are OEM install disks. Try taking an off the shelf, pre SP XP disk and putting it on a computer with SATA drives. Or try Media Centre (from 2005). Oh you don't have a *floppy* disk with drivers on it? Sorry you're SOL buddy.
Having RTFA I can say that there is a lot more to it then just an off hand remark by a Taiwanese executive. No one seemed to be showing off Linux products. Any hype that companies like AMD, Intel and Acer made about using Linux seems to have dried out completely. And there sits MS, fat and confident that they can continue to tell hardware companies what to do and they'll just fall in line.
Hyperbole? Maybe. But history *does* seem to suggest otherwise...
Well another stark difference is that in China no one gets a song about Tienanmen up on the Top 40 charts either. Sure it's not popular now but I didn't learn about Kent State in a history class, I heard about in that song Ohio by Crosby, Stills and Nash and then read about it later.
Sure but if google does it maybe it won't suck. At least we can be fairly sure it won't get bought out by Microsoft. Which, IIRC, is when the major suck set into groove.
Hey, just like with Linux if this *Revolution* allows me to do more, be more flexible, generally control how my experience works then it will be a success. As far as I'm concerned the minute an open source app makes the author(s) and even one other person more productive or happy is a success.
It will be interesting to see how it compares to going to m.google.com and linking to a site through a search result. My experience so far is that m.google does a pretty good job of reformatting sites for mobile devices on the fly.
I'll probably be able to submit some feedback based on testing on the PSP.

Tested heavily. My point exactly.
Well there was that odd time a few years back when they had Microsoft Linux available.... Just saying... (this isn't a joke, they DID)

Actually it did not rain here today so I am highly dubious about you're claim that it rained where you are.
I'm going to write an Emacs clone that uses Brainfuck for its scripting.
Sweet. Let me know if you want some help with that. I'm interested in writing a vi mode for something like that. In Java.
If you get to the point where you achieve that level of efficiency in a storage product I will be sure to invest heavily in your company!
I was going to suggest he should ask the UK government, but I like your idea better.

*affectionately known as the vomit comet!
Do you happen to play in a band called Spinal Tap?
Aagh! I just can't help it!
Nope, not bitter, just like to have discussions about something interesting, rather than rehash the same old arguments every time.
You *must* be new here.
$20! For a slice of pizza? That's outrageous! And you say we have nothing to fear.
OMG, we're all gonna die!
Rebecca MacKinnon also suggest that the Chinese government is considering similar filtering requirements for mobile phones.
Looks like Sony's getting geared up for this too...

Really the discussion is pointless, here is all you need to know.
1998 called, they want their tired, lame anecdote about Linux back.

'If you're IBM, Microsoft and Oracle, your worst nightmare is now visible.'
I didn't realize they had merged.
You just described my worst nightmare!
Just make sure your patched first.

This happens in Iceweasel 3.06 as well. Or something similar anyway.

It will be in beta for 5 years. So you have no grounds to complain about anything for a long long time.
Not necessarily!
...but it's close enough for government work!
*ducks*
*runs*
You might want to also *hide* :-)
J/K really, that's one of my favorite jokes! (The government part, not the Linux part).
