IE is a hairball, but if you were running CDE, then it's probably not entirely fair to blame IE. The mwm Solaris runs, even though mwm SET the standards for so many window manager, is horrible about desynchronizing events, meaning that it will lock up when code behind many GUI events locks up. Not even windows displays that kind of behavior.
I expected someone to totally misread Intel's intent and fly off the handle with righteous prattle... thanks for not disappointing me.
On a less flippant note...

Free software isn't new, it's just breaking into the mainstream. The concepts behind Linux aren't new, it is just software. But when Apache consistently wipes the floor with IIS, people suddenly realize that those so-called "business solutions" are also "just software". Free software has rubbed off a lot of the magic dust that used to collect on proprietary software.
Tell you what: when I have an extra cordless PDA that I can toss around, spill coffee on, use to annotate various pages of documentation, place any convenient thin object (including, temporarily, my fingers) in to mark my place, has sufficient resolution so lots of text is readable from a few feet away without strain, and can afford to misplace and buy another copy once in a while, lemme know.
It gunna be dead. must think... ow... okay think done. disco dead. so say disco was not dead, so say mp3 like disco because disco dead after it not dead once. huh huh me think good.
an analogy between a style of music and an encoding format. how idiotic can you get?
Rob, maybe an option could be added to the message upload filter to turn url's into links? Since netscrape's highlighting is so wretchedly, offensively, egregiously, and (other adjectives) BAD (it's the sole reason why I run IE at home), it's often not worth the bother of even doing the highlight. Sounds lazy, but consider that when the highlight spills over to the rest of the text (as it often does), it sometimes nearly kills netscape. It's that bad.
Which, as I've been saying over and over and over again, does not have any decent literal, slicing, or splicing syntax. Python's lists are an example of literal lists (I could do without its schizophrenic BASIC-inspired slicing syntax though)
As for JPython, just search for my posts whenever python comes up. I reserve even more venom for its idiotic treatment of whitespace, and its bleating hordes who beat me over the head with Microsoftian notions that it's actually some kind of feature.
The manual boxing/unboxing of types is annoying. That Java doesn't even have a list type is infuriating. What is this Vector nonsense? Hell, even most MUD server languages at least have actual list datatypes, many have associative arrays, most have list slicing and splicing literals as well. Not to mention there's usually some iteration functions/structures like map, apply, foreach, and so forth.
> Where else can you play a sound of any format or codec in about 7 or 8 lines?
I'm probably getting the name of the class insanely wrong, but there's a Qt widget that's like so:
QPlayer::play(filename);
one line. it just needs some more codecs. I'll give Be that, Linux has no coherent media framework. Kinda sad when you consider that it's so insanely easy to get a scheduler that favors media playback (setscheduler(SCHED_RT) or something like that)
There's just no information about it from that page. The "links" section, aside from mirrors listing, has a grand total of three links, one to a usenet group (I don't get that group, and it's not a very good intro) and the others are scoreboards. The client download page gives a confusing array of options, there's no FAQ I can see, there's no screenshots of clients, no "about" link, no feature blurbs... It may well be the best game no one ever gets to hear about.
SMAC is far better than Civ2 with respect to its flexibility, breaking down governments into multi-axial categories with their own strengths and weaknesses. But the AI still SUCKS. It SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS. The computer can't strategize its way out of a paper bag and relies on rampant CHEATING instead. I have played versions of Empire that have better AI. I sincerely hope the AI was somehow scriptable and that they release some patches to make playing against the computer a little more rewarding, because having more drones and more cheating at higher levels is not nearly as fun as playing against an opponent that's actually clever.
Oh, and "randomize faction leader personalities" appears to be a no-op as well.
Sure we hate RIAA. That's why we want to set them and Escient in the ring for a good old fashioned cockfight. Set them against each other nice and good.
For all his high-minded speechmongering on Free Software... I agree. Wholeheartedly. However, software that is currently closed must be allowed to die friendless and alone (nice little image there), not perpetuated by piracy. RMS's cavalier attitude on software piracy is something I can never agree with.
Okay, perhaps you're not "stealing" ideas if you can't really "own" them. What about all the artists that design the cut scenes, or the special effects or the voice acting? How about the managers who order in pizza for the team, or the salespeople who take the orders?

Linux is only free if your time is worthless

Lovely, now it's Anonymous Coward.
Uh.... why is my name showing up as Black Wolf in the comment? It's scrytch.
Got an off-by-one bug in the user database there, Rob?
If that happens, Linux has won. Microsoft will have become a Linux VAR. That would mean admitting utter defeat for NT. I just don't see it happening.
Some of us have marginally more reasons to live. I suggest getting out more or getting antidepressants.
> It'll probably be like IE for UNIX - big, slow, CPU-intensive, and prone to crashes.
... how?
This is different than Netscape for UNIX

Lemme know when Cisco open-sources IOS, okay?
And it's being done:

They're hosted by GoodNoise -- GoodNoise might want to put real sponsorship this if they get mention on *voluntary* placement of blurbs.
This could be the quickest demise of a format in history.
It's too late now. Remember ARC? I didn't think so.
it's something i made up. LDAP as access method, RDF for the format. Seems a little odd, but LDAP's just another access protocol like HTTP, really.
Then don't use so many. my KDE desktop looks nothing like that. screenshots are meant to look busy.
make the last line of your .xinitrc read:
/opt/kde/bin to your path too (unless you have an install that puts it elsewhere).
exec startkde
Oh, make sure you add
